Kaya

I lay there in the bright light and sat up suddenly. A woman was standing next to me. She was beautiful. Her long white hair was to her feet. Her white skin had a glow. And her white eyes were looking right at me. "My daughter Kaya." I could hear her. "Yes, in here, you can hear and talk. Try it." I opened my mouth and thought about what I wanted to say. "Who are you?" It took me back to hear my voice. The women smiled.

"You are in my home." I looked around. It was pure white. "I also frequent the land where all my children go when they die, you know, as the Garden, but this is actually where I live." "But who are you?" "I think you already know the answer." "You are the Goddess." "Yes I am, I am named Selen." I smiled. She had a name. "Do you know why I brought you here instead of the garden with the other wolves who died?" I just shook my head. "Well, I wanted to talk to you."

"I wanted to thank you for uniting the North and the South. I always wanted you both to be friends. Not only that, but you have brought Shadow Pack back to the ways you were supposed to live. You found a nice harmony between new and old. The modern with traditional." I just stared at her. "I want you to continue to help Shadow Pack. They are better with you, and you must help other packs, too." "What do you mean?" "I mean, I am sending you back. But there are some things you need to know." I stood there with my mouth hanging open. I was going back.

"When you return, you need to know that I have made a lot of matches with the south and north. Howi he killed a lot of the northern packs." "That is why we were not finding mates." The Goddess nodded. "The south will take in a lot of northerners. Most will be in Shadow Pack, but some will be in other packs. You will need to encourage other packs to respect the beliefs of the north." "What if they do not listen." "You cannot make them, but you can advocate for them." I nodded.

"And I wanted to talk to you about who I want to run the packs." "Okay." "Honestly, it does not matter if they are a woman or a man. Not only that, but it does not matter if they were chosen or if they were born into it. What matters is they value the right things." I nodded. "Lastly, you need to kill Howi and anyone like him in the future." I agreed with that he was a monster. "I am going to send you back now. Is there anything you wish to ask of me?"

"Could I have my hearing back? Can I have more children?" "I am sorry, Kaya, but you are perfect the way you are, and I wouldn't change a thing about you. And I am sorry your daughter will be your only child. But she will be the best of her generation." I gave her half a smile. Then I was engulfed in a bright light and was back in the snow. I sat up to see Robert holding a little baby. "Robert," I mind-linked him. His eyes, which were red and irritated, stared at me. "Kaya." I read his lips. "Can you please hand me my baby." He stood up and walked towards me. Handing me to her.
I stared down at the tiny creature in my arms. I lifted up the bloody fur she was wrapped in and saw that my baby was a girl. I smiled down at her, wrapping her up again. Her mouth started opening and closing, and I knew she was hungry. I pulled up the new winter clothes that I had been put in. Another gift from the Goddess. She latched instantly, and I sat back, trying to get comfortable. Enjoying looking at her, my eyes traveled back to Robert.

"How are you here right now? You died." He mind linked me. "The Goddess sent me back." He looked away, and I noticed him wiping his eyes. Then his gaze stopped. I looked at where he was looking, and I saw a pile of supplies and smiled. The Goddess had gifted them to us; I just knew it, just like she had dressed me when she returned me. I couldn't wait any longer to mind link Cade. He would have felt me through the link when I died. "Cade." He didn't respond. I looked at Robert. "Where is he? Do you know how he is?" He knew I was talking about Cade. "I mind-linked him earlier today, Luna. He had been going and going for days. I am sure he is just sleeping. I felt it in my gut. It was more than just sleep. "When she is done eating, we are moving out." He nodded. I knew how to find my way on the tundra. I could find my way back to Crescent Moon Pack.

I looked down at my baby as she was finishing up. She needed a name. I looked down at her and felt she was a bright light in my life. I decided to name her Sol after the sun. "Robert, her name is Sol." He smiled at me as he searched through the gear. He found clothes got dressed, and I finished with Sol and found a baby board. It was something we used in the north to carry our babies on our backs. I smiled as I wrapped her in a cloth diaper and bundled her up in the supplies. Robert and I ate some of the food, and I bandaged his now-infected bullet wound, and then all three of us loaded up on the large sled.

We took off, and I sniffed the air. I knew the smells from the north. It was the easiest way to find my way. Out here, where there was little to smell, it was easy to determine what was out there. If I could smell the sea, we were headed in the right direction. We were on the sled for many hours, stopping every two hours so I could feed Sol. Then, a familiar scent hit me. It was not Crescent Moon Pack but Cade.
