I mind-linked Cade. "Cade, I will be there in the next half hour." Then, I dropped the link. Helen followed me as we went behind the packhouse and waited for the two boys. It took only a short time for both of them to arrive. I mind-linked the boys together. "Tyler, Conner. You will dig a twelve-foot hole; it must be big five feet across."

The boys gave me a strange expression. I used my influence as Luna to make it a command and then added the link. "Mind, link me when you're done. "Oh, and no fighting." I then cut off the link and looked at Helen. I informed her that I was going to go see Cade and that if I needed her, I would mind link her.

I found Cade's office relatively quickly. I just followed his scent. I walked right into the room. I didn't see the need to ask his permission to enter a room. He had told me this place was my home, and I could move about as I saw fit.

He looked up and saw me. He patted his lap as if he wanted me to come sit on it. I moved and did just that. I wanted to be close to him. It was always comforting to have him close to me. Upon sitting down, I rubbed myself against him, getting comfy and inhaling his scent. I began to feel him in my head. "Kaya, we need to discuss your guard." "My guard?" "Yes." "I don't need protection." "It isn't necessarily about that. You could hold your own." "So, what is it about."

"If something happens to the pack and a new alpha takes over, they could command the guard or anyone to hurt you in the pack. In that case, you would need someone uniquely loyal to you. They would get you out and stay by your side so you would not have to turn into a rogue." "I can't be a rogue. I am still connected to the crescent moon pack."

"Oh, I had not thought of that? Still, you need a guard; it is how we do things. No matter what, they will always be on your side and will be sworn to you." "How does that work if they are sworn to me." "What do you mean?"

"I mean, how are they only loyal to me. I mean, you are their Alpha. Also, let's say the worst does happen. They are supposed to just abandon their family for me." "Yes, or they choose to not have a mate." "NO." "No, what do you mean?" "I won't ask anyone to do that." "Kaya, it is a great Honor."

"I won't do it. I won't have someone give up their family for me. I also won't rob them of the opportunity to have a mate." Cade didn't respond at first. Then he mind-linked me. "How about a compromise. You can pick guards who have been rejected or lost their mates and have no children.""So, people who have been rejected?"

I couldn't believe it. I thought Annalise was the exception. She was the only person I ever heard of not waiting for their mate. Now I found out it has happened more than once. "What about the pack law? Aren't you supposed to put your mate first?" "Yes, but it is people's choice who they make their mate." "That is ridiculous. It is silly to ask that of someone just so they can be my guard."

"Kaya, this is just how the pack is set up." I didn't care it was stupid, and I planned to change some of these archaic rules. But to pacify my mate, I would pick for my few choices. "Fine, give me the names of the choices, and I will pick two. Hopefully, there are not too many to choose from."

He nodded and then waited a few minutes, and then asked. "How are you still connected to your old pack." "What do you mean?" "I have never heard of something exactly like it." "Oh, I never renounced them.” "So, you are a part of two packs?"

"I don't think so. Nieva said we are equal now, so I don't think she thinks I'm part of the crescent moon. But she didn't ask me to renounce them. It's probably because she wants me to still be able to mind link them, and I am the first one to leave the North. I honestly don't know."

"Don't people renounce their own pack when they join other packs?" "Most of the time, yeah. A few guys who found their mate in a possible or already Luna kept the link open. Maybe that is why she didn't ask me to renounce the pack. You are an Alpha of your own pack." I could see him thinking.

"So, it will take me to the end of the day to get a list compiled for you for possible guards. I wanted to tell you we cleaned out an office for you." "What?" "You know, to work out of. See people who need to be tended to during the day." I thought about it, and I had a better idea."Cade, I have a better idea." "What is that?"

"Why don't I just work out of your office. I will not need my space as I like to get out and not spend too much time indoors. And if I absolutely need to do some paperwork, I can work at a second desk on the other side of this office." I waited for his response. "It is not usually done like this. But I need help finding the problem. Other than when you are here, you may be a distraction."

I smiled and gave him a quick kiss. "I will have someone bring in a desk."I got up and looked at the bookcase in the room. It was crammed with different types of books. I could read, but it wasn't like I actually read books. They are rare in the North. Cade mind-linked me. "Feel free to take any you want."

I nodded and pulled one out. I sauntered to the chair facing Cade and sat down, book in hand. I felt him connected with my mind. "Don't you have stuff to do?" Without looking up, I mind-linked him. "Waiting for the boys to be done."
