Everyone was in high spirits. The drinking had already started and Kaya and her friends where bottomless pits. I didn't know how they drank so much. Kaya mind linked me. "We should announce the tattoos then they can talk about it ask questions and then we can do the hunt." We had talked about days prior how to talk to the pack about the pack tattoo. Then I thought about Kaya hunting. She was fairly drunk already how did she plan on hunting. I had never seen anyone shift who had alcohol in their systems.
I looked at the pack and most people where feeling the effects and I wondered how that would all work. Kaya wanted me to talk through most of the days activities because she could only mind link and sign and she wanted people to actual hear the schedule. I stood up and spoke, getting everyone's attention. With there eyes all on me I began. "Shadow Pack, I am happy you are all enjoying yourself. Now I would like to talk to you about something.
As you know, Kaya and her friends are from the North. They all have tattoos. The one on their back is their pack tattoo they were born into. I have felt we should start this tradition. It is nice to have a permanent reminder of where you come from."
I went on "Now I know you are wondering how we as grown wolves can get tattooed because of our healing abilities. Well your Luna and I experimented and we found that wolfsbane ink works well. It burns when it is tattooed more than a regular tattoo, but it heals and has no complications. Now I am not commanding you to get the pack tattoo the choice will be yours if you want to get it." I turned around and pulled off my Jacket so they could see it on the back of my neck. Kaya had a matching one on the back of her neck above her crescent moon pack tattoo.
"We have someone in the pack who can do these for you if you so choose. But it is something that is important to me, and I want you all to think about it. Now if you have any questions I will take those now." A woman stood up. "Alpha, what about the children. I mean, we know our Luna and her friends from the north all got their tattoos when they were twelve before they got their wolf. Will kids be getting pack tattoos as well before they get their wolf?"
"I will leave that up to your discretion. If they are 12 they are allowed to get a tattoo but no younger and the ink will be regular not wolfsbane. Personally, our children, when Luna and I have them, will get tattoos at the age of twelve." I looked at Kaya, who smiled. Another man stood he was young maybe sixteen. "Can we get other tattoos, too alpha?" "If that is what you want, then yes. Just make sure you are getting them for a reason not to just get one." The boy nodded and sat down.
There was not many questions which was a relief. I dispersed the information and then said. "Now that it is lunch time we are going to do a pack hunt and run. There will be five kills, and everyone is expected to be there for this if they have a wolf. Those with little kids who can't shift are allowed to remain with the kids. But everyone else is expected to partake. We will be eating as wolves so best get used to the idea of eating a raw animal." Kaya was practically glowing. "Now divide into five groups. You will have a leader in each group who will walk you through the hunt if you have not done this before."
Kaya had been working on hunting with a lot of the pack. Teaching mostly they got smaller prey but Kaya told me this is about big game. I had gone out with her enough times to know how to hunt. I would lead a group like Kaya, Saka, Len, and Mark. Mark was the worst out of all of us, but he knew what to do. Everyone divided up and stripped down, all shifting into their wolves. Kimi was with Kaya as she was the only one who could mind link with her as she was not a member of the pack. I watched as Jack joined Kaya's group.
He had even given Kaya a gift this morning, and it rubbed me the wrong way. He had bought her a Amythest necklace which she thanked him for, but I knew she felt weird about it based on the look on her face. I was furious that he had the audacity to buy my mate anything, let alone jewelry. I needed to keep a close eye on him today, but he would be out of my sight during the hunt. I looked at Robert's wolf and mind-linked him. "Watch Jacks wolf. I feel like he is up to something." His wolf's head went up and down in understanding.
I would have him take a group out, but I wanted him with Kaya. The groups where big as we were a big pack but one elk could feed a lot of us so the group size did not matter so much. I went to stand next to the group. Kaya's group was the first to leave, and then Saka's and Len's. Mark went second to last, and my group finally took off. It was best to stagger when everyone left. So we were not all rushing into the woods simultaneously. I mind linked the wolves with me. "What does everyone smell." "I smell nothing but the forest." One replied it took a few minutes when one of the younger of the group mind linked, "I smell a deer." "You lead the way then we will follow your nose." So he started to lead us deep into the woods.
It didn't take long until I smelt it. I had everyone stop. This particular animal was alone, so there was no formation we needed. "Whoever kills it gets the heart. Everyone else eat as much as you want." Then we took off. The mule deer took off and we pursed. I watched my pack as they chased the animal. Just then a smaller wolf lunged at the mule deer ripping into its throat the beast fell. Everyone watched as the smaller wolf walked over to where the heart was and ripped into it. We all joined in eating the animal. We had done it. I lifted my snout into the air and let out a howl. Those around me responded as I heard others in the distance answer my howl.
