Epilogue Part 2

Epilogue 5 years later

I watched Kaya teach Sol how to throw knives. Sol had been wanting to try it for a while now. But Kaya told her she had to wait. We had bought her some throwing knives the weekend before, and Kaya wanted her to have those. Sol had already started using knives but was so excited to learn to throw them. Kaya had set up a target amongst the trees for her to throw to.

I stood there watching Kaya show Sol how to stand and her technique. Then I watched Kaya throw the first knife, hitting the target dead on. Sol did as her mother, and as she threw it, I watched as it had also hit its mark. Kaya looked at her, and I watched as she signed. "Have you practiced?" Sol said. "Mom, of course, I have. I want to be better than everyone else." I watched as Kaya laughed. That was like Sol to do that.
She always wanted to be better than everyone her age. She felt that she had a lot to prove. Which she did. She would be the next Alpha and, not only that, the only female Alpha in the South. That would be a lot to put on her shoulders. We still had most of the South-hating Shadow Pack. I would not be surprised if Sol had to manage another war when she took over for Kaya and me.

There was so much hatred for the northerners in the South. Kaya had been spending a lot of the time trying to get other packs to realize we were not to be feared. But when we made headway and would visit other packs. Seeing her scared them. They immediately saw her as a threat because she had lived through the impossible. In addition to all of that, Shadow Pack was super self-reliant. A lot of our money was now in the bank. We used more of the land, and people started to make many things. The only things we consistently bought were clothes and fruits. No one bought meat anymore. Everyone hunted. It was normal.

Also, we had become way more in tune with one another. Kaya had changed it so every meal was eaten as a pack. We had to do some construction on the packhouse to accommodate everyone eating there and had to hire a whole kitchen staff. We also did pack runs much more frequently now. Shadow Pack had become a vast melting pot of the North and the South. Everyone was a much better fighter now and stronger. Having the northers join the pack had made us much more robust.

Sol was well on her way to being a strong alpha. Kaya worked with her every day. I did as well, but her mom taught her better. But, like me, she was stubborn and insisted on doing things her way. I watched as she threw another knife, hitting her mark. Kaya signed. "Well, since you are so good, why are we even practicing. It looks like you have been doing it for a while without me." "Mom, let's see who is better and faster." There she was, being competitive again.

Kaya laughed. She moved and pulled out a bunch of targets, and then I watched as she walked into the woods. After a while, she came back. "Okay, you want to race. Whoever gets all five targets first wins." She signed. I knew Kaya would win. She was a lot faster than Sol. At least now she was. Sol was only five. They took off running, and then, after a good while, Kaya came walking out of the woods with an upset Sol next to her.
I knew Kaya never let her win. Kaya would do her best and knew one day Sol would best her. She was looking forward to it. "Now, since you seem to be good at this, keep practicing, and we can do a race every week and see how long it takes you to beat me. Now I think you need to go work on your reading." "But, Mom." "No buts, Sol. Go on and go practice your reading." I watched as Sol threw one of the knives at the tree. She tended to have a temper. Kaya ran up to her and began to sign frantically.

"Drop the attitude, Sol. You have to know how to read and are just now figuring it out. You will be Alpha, and alphas have to know how to read. Now, don't throw a fit. Your father and I got you these knives, and you will respect them, not throw them and walk away. Do you understand?" Sol scowled and then nodded curtly. Kaya continued to sign. "Good, now go get the knife you threw, take the others in, and make sure you sharpen them and keep them clean. Do I make myself clear?" "Yes, Mom." Then Kaya smiled at her, and Sol approached the tree to grab the knives.

She stormed off, going to the packhouse. I approached Kaya. She mind-linked me. "Our daughter has a serious attitude, and she is only five. I can't imagine what she will be like when she is a teenager." "I am guessing trouble. It is normal to have an attitude, though, as an alpha. I used to be like that well until my parent's death." "She needs to have it under control, or it will get her into trouble." "In time, love, she will." Kaya smiled at me and then continued to mind Link. "Did you enjoy watching that?" "Yes, I have to admit it is kind of insane you are teaching her to throw knives at five." "You said the same thing when I started teaching the littles years ago."

"I know, but it still astounds me that kids can throw knives." "Knives are perfect for their little hands." I laughed. "I was wondering what you had planned for the rest of the afternoon?" I mind-linked, "Nothing, really. I planned to see Kimi and her new baby, but that was it." "How about you spend the afternoon with me. I was thinking maybe a run?" She smiled at me. "So you want to go fuck in the woods, huh?" I smirked. Kaya knew me too well. She stripped out of her clothes in front of me and shifted and then mind-linked. "How about if you can catch me, you can have me."
