We ran and ran, and everyone was beyond tired by the time we were only an hour away. They had been up for almost a whole week. We had been running from one pack land to another, only eating and drinking sporadically. By the time we arrived, I didn't know if we would be in good enough condition for a fight.
We would have to be though. There was no way to avoid it. Howi had the pack surrounded according to Kaya. This would be our last stand. I had everyone take a minute to rest. With us being so close, it was all we could do to prepare. Everyone stood around in wolf form, all panting heavily. We had made good time running, and as of right now, Howi had yet to cross into the pack lands, and that was good at the very least.
Mark's wolf came up to me. "You ready for this?" He mind linked me. I looked at Shadow Pack. "We will have to be." His wolf nodded. We rested for about half an hour before I told everyone it was time to run again. Everyone was quick to get on their feet and start running again. I mind-linked Kaya. "Kaya, we will be there soon, in about an hour. Any update?" There was silence. "Kaya!" I yelled through the link. My heartbeat pounded. She was not responding.
Just as the panic started to seize me, "Can't talk, he crossed." It was Kaya. Howi had done it. He had made it over the border. I couldn't believe Kaya had managed to postpone him for so long. I knew she had laid mines outside the border initially, but she informed me now there were as many as she could make inside the pack lands as well. She and the others knew where the minds were and the several traps, but we coming back had no idea.
Fighting without knowing where we could get blown up would be challenging. We would be at yet another disadvantage. I warned the pack about the traps and mines, and Kaya had tried to mind-link images of where they had been placed, but I didn't think each picture was so obvious as to where they were. I hoped the others better understood the locations of the devices.
The thought rushing through my mind right now, though, was Kaya. I knew she and the others were swarmed. What did that mean for Sol? Kaya couldn't fight with her attached to her. She needed to do it as a wolf. She was stronger in that form. What did she do to protect our daughter? I mind-linked Robert. Kaya would have trusted him enough to get her to safety. "Robert." "Alpha, a little busy." "Tell me what is going on." He didn't respond.
I needed to get there now. I had no idea what to do except run faster. This could be the end of Shadow Pack. Soon, we heard the explosions, the snarling, and the gnashing of teeth. We crossed over the border, and we saw bodies of wolves mangled all over the place. The ground was red with blood. We continued to run further into the pack, and that is when we saw it. There had been a massive crowd formed.
Daybreak Pack had surrounded everyone who was left in Shadow Pack. I could not see Kaya or the northerners who had been living with us. I couldn't see anyone but wolves that were not my own. Shadow Pack didn't hesitate and began to rip into the wolves. Tearing chunks out of them. We had spent months and months training, and it all came down to this. I engaged with the closest wolf. They were all bigger than the northern wolves but not bigger than my pack or myself.
I broke the neck of the first wolf I fought, tossing him to the ground. I ripped into the next one. I would not stop. Wolf after wolf I killed. But there were just so many, and I could barely move with how many bodies there were.
There needed to be more room to maneuver with how many wolves were together. We needed to break up this mob. We needed to spread them out. We couldn't win like this, and I knew the Daybreak pack had the upper hand with the numbers. Having swarmed us, they had an even more significant advantage. But there was no way to break up the mob. I had to continue to fight with no space. Every time I moved, I would get a scratch or a bite taken from me.
There was no way to avoid the hits I took as there was no space to outmaneuver them. I prayed to the Goddess. I needed help. I knew there was no way we could win like this. Just then, I heard a rumble, and the ground shook. The ground started to separate from one another, and deep caverns fell open. I tossed one of Daybreak wolves into the nearest rift in the earth's crust. The opening in the ground had broken up the mob, leaving us space to deal with the wolves facing us.
I had room suddenly and was not getting bitten and scratched as I killed the Daybreak Pack wolves. The Goddess had answered my prayers. She was on our side, and that was apparent. I knew she didn't want Howi to win. She had told Kaya he needed to die. I looked everywhere for him as I tore into anyone who was in front of me. Even with the rifts in the earth, Daybreak pack was everywhere. Though they were not swarming us anymore, they still outnumbered us.
I sniffed the air. I needed to find Kaya. As I bit into a brown wolf, I tried to mind link but had no response. Robert was much of the same. I killed, and it didn't seem like I was getting anywhere. The numbers were just staggering. I didn't know if we would win this. We had only so many of us, and their numbers were endless. Where was Kaya? I screamed in my head as I killed yet another wolf.
