40. Kaya
Kaya
I didn't listen to the doctor. My arms had healed in a matter of days. My leg felt fine, so I insisted it was best to be up and walk around on it. Cade had fought me on it, but he could and would not physically restrain me. Crescent Pack would be here today. The pack had also warmed to me after I fought off an Alpha and had inflicted so much damage on him. I stood before the packhouse with Cade, waiting to welcome my friends.
I had smelled them an hour ago and insisted on sitting in front of the packhouse before they arrived. They would be here by foot. None of them could drive. We had never had a reason to learn. My brother Quill learned from our father because he came to the South yearly, but these wolves had never been allowed to learn.
When I saw them running up to the packhouse, I could not help myself. I raced toward them. Cade shouted over the link. "Kaya, you should not be running." I ignored him and continued running, practically tackling my friends as they approached me. It was Kimi, Saka, and Len. We all hugged one another. They connected me over mind link speaking in our native language. "Kaya, you are alive," Kimi said. "Of course I am," Len added. "I heard you took on an Alpha; must have been a weakling to be beaten by you." "What are you saying? I am a weak fighter." He laughed, and I smiled.
Our community was small, and we were all like a family. Cade came up and began to speak. I focused on his mouth. "Welcome; we have rooms set up for you. I can show you." They nodded, and we walked back to the packhouse. My arm wrapped around Kimi. I felt her in my head as we approached the big house. "Shit, you live here?" "Yes, but others stay here too; it is not just me and Cade." A few of the pack members came to see who the newcomers were. I saw their faces; they looked at them like we were crazy. They were wearing buckskin clothing, and Kimi had a face tattoo just like me.
Saka signed it for me. "What are they staring at?" "Your clothes, most likely." He looked down at his clothes and then them and their attire. "I guess we must get some things to blend in." I signed, "Going shopping is weird. They use weird products that smell horrendous. You will need unscented things, and I will ask Becky to cook the good stuff for you. Their food is weird, too. They don't do anything raw, and they don't hunt." Now my friends stared at me. I signed again. "I plan on introducing hunting to the kids; maybe you can help me?"
"I am so in. We have had so many different animals down south that I seriously can't believe how stocked these woods are." Kimi and Len agreed with Saka. Cade just watched us interact with one another. I looked and noticed Robert had also come out to watch the exchange. Getting used to being followed around everywhere by him was weird, but he was good company. I watched as my friends were wide-eyed as we showed them around the packhouse. They thought their rooms were huge, but in fact, they were minor compared to my room. We had put them with the Delta's quarters.
"So, when is this tournament. I want to kick some southern ass." Len signed. Saka repeated his plea to kick ass, his face animated as I read his lips. Whereas Kimi couldn't care less. "The other packs will be arriving next week," Cade told them to make themselves at home and that we should spend time together before dinner. I helped Kimi while the guys did their own thing. We sat there catching up. Helen came by and dropped off a bunch of clothes for all of them. Kimi was about my size. The guys were muscular but still shorter than the men here, and the pants had been tailored to be shortened.
"This is so weird to be wearing this," Kimi said. "I know it was an adjustment when I first arrived, too. "It is so warm here." "Yeah, I can't imagine how hot the summer will be." "So you have to tell me what it is like to be mated." "Well, it was good at the beginning, lots of sex and stuff, but Cade and I had a fight, and I have been keeping my distance." "Kaya, you know that is not right. He is half of your soul you should make up already." "I know, I just don't know." "Is he learning sign or anything?" "Yeah, I started teaching him and our native language." "That is good, at least." "He is picking up signs easily enough but can't really get the language. I think it is because I can't speak, so it is hard for him." "Ask Saka and Len to teach it to him."
"Maybe he is busy a lot of the time." "Are you busy too?" "Yeah, Helen and I go around a lot and help with kids and mothers'. Most of the pack's problems among the people I am in charge of fixing. With Helen as well, we have been planning the tournament. It is a lot." "Well, we are here now and will help you." "I can't believe Nieva let you guys come down here." "We are supposed to keep her updated on the ongoings of this place. Since she was so out of the loop with the South, she wants to be more informed from now on."
"I get that. How is my family?" "Your mother cried for a week after you left. Your sisters miss you, and Quill is super sad that you left. Your dad has not spoken about it, so I don't know." I nodded in understanding. My family had never expected me to leave when I found my mate. This had to be a shock to them. Kimi got up and rushed to the door. Len and Saka were there. I read their lips. "Can we come in?" Kiki opened the door for them.
They looked so different in their new clothes. "What do we do until dinner?" "What do you want to do?" Len signed. "Well, I vote we go for a walk. I want to see these pack lands. No snow on the ground is weird." I agreed, and we walked out of the packhouse to show them around the pack area. They were shocked at the buildings, just like when I arrived.
