Kaya
I sat there as Helen finished her makeup. She had done Kimi's first and then her own, and now she was doing mine. Kimi looked so different with it on. I thought she looked pretty before, but now she looked like something mythical.
Helen had insisted we get ready for the party in her quarters. She knew we knew nothing about makeup and wanted to ensure we looked perfect. She really was amazing. Without her, the whole thing would have been fundamental. I knew very little about parties or hosting people other than you need to provide them with food. Which I did.
"Thank you, Helen, you are amazing; this whole thing is amazing, and the tents and everything. "I mind-linked her. "Oh, hush about that. You did help a lot, you know. You helped with colors, what food would be served, and when. You also listened when I gave advice, which is more than some people can do." "Well then, thank you for doing Kimi's makeup and my own." "Are you kidding me? I have been dying to put some makeup on you." "Do I need it?" "Hell no, but I am making you look like the goddess herself."
I sat there in my midnight blue dress. Helen had taken Kimi, Saka, Len, and me to a go shop for this party. There were to be two balls during the week, so Kimi and I had to get two formal dresses, and the guys had to get formal clothes as well. I looked at Kimi, who looked stunning in her light purple dress. Her arms were totally exposed, and you could see her arm tattoos.
Helen looked beautiful as well in her green dress. I mind-linked Helen. "Do you know what you are doing with your hair?" "No, I was thinking of just leaving it down." I looked at Kimi, who winked. "You did our makeup; we will do your hair." "I don't know." "You may know makeup, but we know hair. We have grown up doing it." She agreed. Kimi and I went to work. Doing intricate braids and fastening them, I read her lips when she turned around. "Okay, maybe you both do my hair from now on."
Kimi and I laughed. I did Kimi's hair next. When I was done, she was happy. So Helen tackled my makeup, and Kimi did my hair. When Kimi pulled my hair up, I mind-linked her. "What are you doing?" "Your dress is backless. What is the point of it if you can't see it." "You know we wear our hair down. I did intricate braids for you." "You pinned Helen's hair up." "You know she does not do what we do." "You are a luna of the south, and your hair can be off your back if you want. Besides, no one will see our pack tattoo if you make me leave the braids down the back." "Fine, but this is not going to become the normal."
Kimi smiled. Pinning my two braids on my head to make a crown. Helen finished my makeup, and I stood to look in the mirror. I could not believe what I was looking at. The dark blue dress hugged my curves. My chest tattoo was prominent and looked like a sizeable intricate necklace across my chest. My face looked the same, but my eyes were covered in browns and blacks, making my dark brown eyes pop. My lips only had a shine to them. I looked so different. I turned in the mirror to see my whole back on display. The Crescent Moon Packs tattoo was on clear display right up my spine.
I looked at Helen, who began to talk, so I read her lips, "Kimi, should we take bets to see how long it takes Cade to pull Kaya away so he can have her to himself." I looked at Kimi, who looked at me and then responded. "I give him four hours." Helen laughed. "I give him one." I just rolled my eyes. They both looked as good as I did.
Helen mind linked me. "You remember the steps, right Kaya?" Helen had been working with me and my friends, teaching us several dances. I remember the last party. I was not so great at dancing; I could not hear the music, and there were so many smells. One distracted me from all the others. I was at a loss for what to do. I didn't want to make a fool of myself dancing weirdly, so Helen taught me and the other three dances. "I do, but I am nervous. I can't talk to anyone who isn't in our packs or from the north." "You will be fine." "Also, all of them in one room. The smells last time were overwhelming."
My stomach was doing summersaults. I wanted to show that Cade had a strong Luna, but how would I do that when I couldn't say a thing. I could follow the lips of everyone speaking. It was hard when more than one person conversed; I constantly turned my head around and looked at people's mouths. Kimi signed, trying to calm me; she could tell I was nervous.
"I will stay close by, and so will Len and Saka. We can keep you company. Plus, we can tell you what people are saying, too. Not to mention we can sign about them, and they won't even know we are talking shit." I laughed. At least I would have them there, them and Robert, Mark, Helen, and Cade. Then, some of the shadow pack would be there, too.
I could do this, I told myself. I had to do it; I had no other choice. I looked back in the mirror, looking at my makeup. I would wear it as war paint. This was a test for me; although I could not hear, I was a strong Luna. I mind-linked Nieva just then; she could give me a little advice. "Nieva?" "Oh, Kaya, how wonderful to hear from you. You have that party tonight, right." "Yes." I assumed one of my friends had told her.
"I am nervous. I can't speak to anyone here who isn't my pack. What if that makes them distrust Shadow Pack, seeing me as a weak Luna." "Kaya, anyone who knows you knows you are not weak." "But these people don't know me, Nieva." "Hold your head high, watch people. Maybe you can't hear them but can see and smell them. That nose of yours could tell you what kind of diet they have. Use everything you have to learn about them. People will overlook you, and that is fine, but by watching them, you will know them, and if you know them, then you know their weaknesses and strengths. Knowledge is more important than the assumption of strength."
"Thank you." "Now go have fun, girl. I expect an update from you tomorrow about what and to whom you discovered it. Also, keep me updated on the tournament. I know the others will, too, but I want to hear your accounts." "Okay, I can do that. Hey, I was wondering if anyone arrived to find a mate before the storms came." "No, they haven't. You know we have only seen two this whole year. It is weird. I should look into something, but it will have to wait until spring." "Okay, well, you keep me posted on that. Have a good night." "You too, dear, and good luck."
