Cade
I was glad everyone had left. I was concerned as I watched Annalise get in Howi's car. He smirked at Kaya as he got in. What was that about? I had no idea. I knew that Kaya felt that trepidation, too, watching them drive away. She didn't say anything, but I knew she felt it. They were the last to go; hopefully, we would never have to see them again. But Kaya was sure we would see them again. We had spent all morning saying goodbyes, and Kaya looked like she could use a nap. I myself could use one.
We were up late and out of our room earlier than usual, ensuring everyone was packed. Kaya had offered to help take down the tents, and I, too, had helped. I didn't like my Pack thinking that I was above grunt work. But with all the goodbyes and long-drawn-out conversations, we had been away from the packhouse all morning.
I felt like we barely had any sleep last night. We got in at four in the morning and were up again at five, ensuring everything was broken down and people were moving out. Charlie was super grateful he had been invited. He said he knew his Pack was small but was glad he was included. Kaya assured him again if he got right with the Goddess, she would give him a second chance, mate. I saw how he had looked at Kimi last night and hoped that maybe the Goddess would grant him her in the future. But perhaps I was just wanting something good for my friend. Kaya told me to avoid making matches. That was the Goddes's job, not mine.
Jack was almost the last to leave. He stared at Kaya way too long. I still didn't know what he wanted from her. Or why he looked at her the way he did? Every time his eyes glanced at her, it was like lust poured from them. I was so fucking thankful I would never have to see him again. Well, that was not true. We had an alliance, and that alliance demanded we meet sometimes. But he gave me his gratitude for finding Annalise a mate. I had done as he asked and, hopefully, in the process, brought some favor among the other packs that attended.
Kaya mind linked me. "Goddess, I am so glad they have all gone. Now we can focus on what is really important." "What is that?" "Us making the pack awesome, of course." She smiled and laughed. I couldn't help but smile at her. With everyone being gone, she was more at ease than ever. She didn't like that she had to put on a front. She could just be herself, which, to me, was the best thing she could do. I loved her as she was not how the world saw her.
She snuggled closely to me. It was now the beginning of November, and we would be getting snow a lot in the next few months. I linked her. "Kaya, when is your heat?" "April, why?" I looked at her and smiled. "Because I want children and lots of them." "That is good because I want that too." "We don't have to wait until April, you know?" "Cade, you know that is the only time a she-wolf can conceive, well, most likely anyways." "Doesn't mean we can't try now, right." She laughed and blushed. "Oh, I guess you have a point; we certainly can try; stranger things have happened. You know, this woman was in my Pack when I was 15. She got pregnant before her heat. It does happen, you know, just not often."
I grabbed her and threw her over my shoulder, and she laughed. I knew what I wanted. I wanted to see her swell with my child. I ran up the steps and into our room, but Kaya started screaming as soon as I got there. I put her down, and the state of our room was a mess. Kaya fell on the floor, crying and screaming and ripping at herself. I tried to hold her, but she dug her claws in and drew blood. I didn't know what to do. This was so far out of my depth.
The room didn't smell the same as it had when we left. The pillows were ripped, her furs had been cut into pieces, and our clothes stank of petrol on them. The furniture was overturned. I mind-linked Mark to go get her friends. Maybe they would know what to do. Kaya just wailed and was cutting into herself. I tried to hold her again, but she lashed out at me. I heard them running. I made out Kimi's voice: "I can't go in there; it is their den." Mark responded, "Someone already broke in. Cade doesn't know what to do." Kimi, Saka, Len, Helen, and Mark pushed the door open to see a bloody Kaya still screaming and crying, franticly grabbing at the stuff, trying to make a pile of some kind.
"What the fuck do we do?" I yelled at them. Kay was whimpering, and then, as she ran her nose over the petrol-covered clothes, she threw up. That smell would have made anyone sick; she had just stuck her nose in it. I knew she was sensitive to that stuff more so than others. She did it again with the same outcome. She went to her ripped furs and ran her hands over it, sobbing uncontrollably. I tried approaching her again, and she growled. At least this time, she didn't scratch or bite me.
Kimi spoke, "I am talking to Nieva now." Thank fuck, maybe she knew what to do. Kaya began to scratch again, ripping out of her clothes. "Nieva says she needs to be knocked out." "You want me to hit my mate over the head and knock her out? Are you insane?" "Well, do you have a better way to sedate her?" "I mind-linked the pack doctor and told him to rush a sedative here."
We all watched in horror as Kaya ripped at her arms and legs, her stomach, and as much of her back as she could. Her hair was wild, and she was practically foaming at the mouth when the doctor came. He had his syringe ready, but she leaped at him and bit into his arm as he approached. She was like a feral being in human form. "Mark, grab the syringe." He picked it up from the floor, and I grabbed hold of Kaya. She thrashed and bit into me, but I kept a firm grip on her. "Just pick a spot and plunge it in," I yelled. He did as I asked, and Kaya fell limply into my arms. "Now what, Kimi?"
