126. Cade
Cade
We had the spray made. There was so much made that everyone sprayed themselves down. Then, we decided to stagger our movement. So some left already with some deltas. Then another set went yesterday. Today, I was moving out. The people already in Howi's pack had started to set traps. When I got there, I would also set traps. It would take about two days until we were ready to set fires. It was a risk doing it in days as we could get caught.
I knew Howi knew we were already coming. When he set his message, it told me he had eyes on us like we did for him. I tore through the woods, my wolf running at a steady pace. I had my bag attached to my back leg with clothes on it. We could not set the traps and fires in wolf form. But fighting we would need to do in wolf form if possible. We are more robust in that form. I ran all day. Stopping at night to rest, then getting up and running again. It was a two-day run to Daybreak pack.
Howie had moved his pack to Jack's home. Jack had more property and better facilities. I arrived, and my pack was already hard at work setting traps. I joined in and began to help dig pits with spikes at the bottom. It took a week, and everything was set up. My worries about being caught went unfounded. We had not been the least disturbed. It seemed weird to me that we had not encountered anyone. I had expected a few people to come investigate what we were doing.
Even shielding our scent, I expected to be stopped at least once. After a week, everyone was tired and anxious to get home. I like them and wanted to have my mate home. It had taken a whole month to have the skunk perfume made. Kaya was only three weeks away from giving birth. I wanted her at home and safe. We set the fires late in the night and waited. We had set 10. Surrounding the border. We waited, and after an hour, the inferno was out of control, but still no one came.
I was confused. Daybreak pack should be responding to the fires. I would be if my border was lit up. We waited for over two hours, and nothing happened. Where were the warriors? Some of us investigated going further into the pack lands. We saw no one. There was no one there. Not a soul was left behind. Where the hell had they gone. The sky cracked open, and rain started to pour down on us. No doubt, the fires would be put out in the heavy downpour. But I wanted to know where did everyone go. I walked up to the packhouse and found a note on the door.
"Cade, you really thought you would outsmart me? Well, I'd hate to break it to you, didn't. I told your mate she should not have mated with you. This could have been avoided if you didn't consider her your mate. Now, your whole pack will die along with the rest of the North. Oh, and don't you worry, we will get Kaya as well, seeing as I know she is not with the rest of them in the North." My face paled. This was my worst nightmare.
Did he know where Kaya was? He knew that the pack was in the North, but did he know where in the North. We needed to get to them to help Nieva. I started screaming for Kimi. "What is it, Cade." I shoved the note to her, which she quickly read. "Mind link Nieva now. Tell her we are coming for her." I watched as she continued to mind the link. Then she looked back at me. "She is not responding, Cade." "What do you mean?" "I mean, there is something blocking her from mind-linking me." "Silver." She shrugged.
How had I fucked up so much? I should have never sent my pack to the North. We were all gone. There was no one to fight for them. I mean, there were the northerners, but they would be outnumbered. We needed to get up there. "Change of plans. We are all going to the North now." I needed to be there. Kaya was in my mind. Howi knew she was not there. But he didn't say he knew where she was. I mind-linked her and Robert. "Kaya, Robert." Kaya didn't respond, but Robert did. "Hi, Alpha." "Where is she?" "Currently, she is sleeping on the couch." "I don't want you to alarm her, but Howi knows she is not with the rest of the pack, and I know he wants her dead. You guys need to take extra precautions." "Like what, Alpha? It is only me and her here; honestly, she is not doing that great." I knew this. She had agreed to bed rest because her swelling had gotten so bad. Not only that, but the baby was still breech and didn't look like it would turn.
Though her due date was still three weeks away, she could have the baby anytime now. The human doctor she was seeing was pushing for her to have a c-section, but she had held her ground and said she wanted to try before she agreed to that. "I will send some people to come help you watch her. Don't let her out of your sight, do you understand until they get there, and then you can take shifts." "I won't, Alpha." "Good, and try not to alarm her. I don't want her stressed. We are going to the North now."
"Right now?" "Yeah, we can't afford to wait. Nieva is not responding, and Howi knew we sent the pack to the North. We have to go see if they." I couldn't even say it. I was worried they were all dead. "Go alpha and keep us posted." "Thank you, Robert." I dropped the link and addressed the pack. I read the note, and everyone had worry written all over their faces. The rain was soaking us to the bone. "I say we leave here and head north. Only stopping when we absolutely have to." The pack agreed, and we all shifted into our wolves, not bothering to secure our clothes. Kimi and the Northerners began to lead us.
