93. Kaya
Kaya
Robert was sitting there with me, and we both had mugs in our hands. It was storming outside. The snow was really coming down, and I had called off classes with the littles. I was fine in the storm and determined to have them one day be as unaffected in the snow as I was. But they would need to work up to it, so I just decided to call it off. "What are we going to do today, Kaya?" Robert signed. "I don't know. Maybe we do nothing." He and I started to laugh.
Kimi came in and sat down. She looked gloomy. "Kimi, what is wrong?" I signed. "Len and Saka found their mates, and I haven't." I took her hand and mind-linked her. "You will; the goddess will bless you." She squeezed my hand. "Also, I am going to have to go back home in the spring by myself. In truth, I don't want to leave. I miss my family and Nieva, but you are here, and I don't want to leave you." I smiled at her.
Kimi had been my friend since we were babies. Her mother was my mother's best friend. We were born within a week of each other. I knew when Nieva said she was sending some of crescent moon to winter with us Kimi would be among them. When I told her initially about Cade, she was so happy for me. She became sad beyond belief when I told her I was coming to the South. She and I always thought we would have what our mothers had with our children. I had felt the same thing. When Cade came to visit, she mostly stayed away.
It was due to her not knowing how to process my leaving. She knew, though, she could talk to me over the link. But when I saw her when she arrived at Shadow Pack, my being felt lighter. "Kaya, I mean, if it is like last year, and we get almost no males visiting. Maybe I would have better luck if I stayed in the South. I mean, there has to be gatherings Cade goes to where I could meet more wolves." She signed. "I can ask him about it." I mind-linked her. "Cade said Crescent Moon Pack is welcome to winter here next year. He will throw a party to see if anyone who comes has mates in the South." She smiled
"I mean, I get it if I have to go, but I don't want to. Not to mention, I don't want to travel alone." I looked at her. "You will not travel alone. I will make sure if you do go home, I will send someone with you. Maybe I will have some of our pack spend spring with the crescent moon pack." She smiled. "You think any of your wolves could handle the north?" I signed, "Cade, Mark, and Helen did just fine." I watched as she burst out laughing. "What is so funny?" I signed.
"You have no idea. Mark and Helen, the first night you were off with Cade, they could not handle the sheesh or our signature drink. You should have seen them. They were so sloppy and made no sense. Then, they tried to dance, which resulted in them falling all over the place. People had to escort them to their tent because they were disoriented." "That does not mean they couldn't handle the north." I mind-linked her. "You know that is part of our culture, so I see it as they could not handle the north." "Oh, whatever."
Robert tapped my shoulder, so I looked at him. He signed. "I will say Kimi is somewhat right. You guys can drink with no limit." "What do you mean?" "I have seen you drink, and you can handle your liquor better than anyone I have ever seen. I mean, you're a bottomless pit." I laughed. "That has nothing to do with being from the north." I signed in response. Kimi then signed. "Oh, come on, Kaya, you know we can handle more than them." "You guys are being ridiculous. Being able to handle your smoke and drink does not mean you can handle the north." Kimi then added, "It means you can handle our culture." "Whatever." I watched as both Robert and Kimi laughed.
I changed the subject to the winter solstice celebration. "I can't wait to give Cade his gift and yours, Robert. I also got you something, Kimi." I signed. She responded. "Of course you did; you have gotten me something every year since we were little. Though the snowman you made was a weird gift." "It was not. I made it for you." Robert looked between us. I mind-linked him. "I didn't know what else to get her that year." He nodded. Kimi signed. "I got you a good gift this year. You are going to love it. I have been working on little by little."
"Well, you will like my gift too." I smiled as I signed. Robert added. "I had no clue what to get you, Kaya, until recently." I smiled at him before signing, "The thought is what counts." "Oh Goddess, yes, I mean some of the gifts we have been given over the years are kind of crazy. One year, Kaya's sisters got Kaya rocks." I laughed. I remember that solstice. Kimi said, "Trust me, anything is better than that gift." I watched as he laughed. We continued to talk about the celebration. Some of Jack's warriors entered the room, and we fell silent.
They looked at us and sneered. I could tell they were mind-linking with each other. Then they all stared at Kimi. She mind-linked me. "I don't like how they are looking at me." I mind-linked Robert, "Tell them to fuck off." He did as I asked. Then they responded, and I read their lips as they answered. "Dumb bitches, I don't know why Jack thinks she is so great. I mean, she is a dirty northern who doesn't know anything but being a savage. She is ruining this pack." Anger boiled under my skin. How dare they say I am ruining my pack. Robert and Kimi went to calm me, but I ripped myself from the seat and lunged at them.
My nails dug into the face of one of the warriors. The other tried to pull me off, but I growled at him. He hesitated for a moment when I began to choke the one who was now under me. I felt hands pull me away. I knew those small hands; they were Kimi's. I let her pull me away from them as I growled at them. How dare they. They deserved worse than I gave them. Robert came in front of me and signed. "Luna, they do deserve worse. I agree, but we can't just fight them in the hall. Call them out next time we have training." I snarled and began to walk away. I knew Robert and Kimi were following me.
