108. Cade
Cade
April was here, and I watched as Kaya rolled over, her stomach growing daily. She had a sizable baby bump. She was halfway through her pregnancy, and I felt good about it. Howi had not attacked yet. It was peaceful. The snow had stopped, and everything seemed to be going well. Kimi would be remaining with us. Which I was happy about. Kaya wanted her around to be there for the birth. Her mother also wanted to come, but she had yet to tell us if she was coming.
Just then, I got a mind link. "Alpha, we have wolves wanting to cross the border." I sat straight up in the bed. Was this it? No, it couldn't be. Howi would not ask to cross the border. "Who is it?" "I don't know. They are in their wolf form; we can't speak. They didn't cross over the boundary but are standing close to it. Not attacking or anything." "Hang on, I am on my way." I gave Kaya, who was still sound asleep, a kiss. She slept a lot lately.
I mind-linked Mark, telling him to hurry up and come with me. I mind-linked Robert. "Robert." "Yes, alpha." "Thank the Goddess, you are up. It was very early in the morning, and most people were still asleep. I want you outside our den. Some wolves are at our border. I don't know what is happening, but if Kaya wakes up and ventures out, keep her away until I know what is happening. I will let you know." "Yes, alpha." I ran out of the packhouse, Mark running behind me. Both of us shifted when we reached the outside. Neither of us cared that we had shredded our clothes in the process. "What post are you at?" I asked one of the warriors. "The Southern Post." I took off in that direction with Mark on my tail.
We arrived, and it was like the warrior had described. There were five wolves there. One was rather large. All of them were covered in blood. It had to be an alpha. I shifted, ignoring the fact I was naked. The giant wolf turned as well. I instantly knew who he was. "Charlie, what are you doing here?" "Thank the goddess. Cade, please offer us sanctuary. I will kneel to you. You can be my alpha; just please, let us in." I didn't know what was going on. But I knew Charlie; if he needed help, I would give what I could. "Yes, of course, you are welcome here." I nodded to the warriors, who nodded in return.
I shifted again and led the five of them to the packhouse. Mark had mind-linked Helen to have some clothes ready. I usually would have had Kaya do that, but I knew she would be sleeping for another hour, and I didn't want to wake her up. She needed the sleep. At least I could figure out what was happening and then tell her when she awoke. Once everyone was dressed. Charlie asked, "I know you have questions, but please can we eat? We haven't in days."
"Yes, of course." I led the little pack to the kitchen and had Becky heat up some of the food she had already made. Once everyone was in the dining room eating, I watched. There were three men besides Charlie and two females. They all still had blood on them. Once Charlie finished, he looked at me. "Cade, thank you." "Charlie, what happened?" "Daybreak Pack came." "Howi's pack?" "Yes, they came and ripped into us. We were asleep when they attacked. It came out of nowhere. What you see is what is left with us. They killed everyone." "How could they do that? How are you alive." "I was fighting when I heard the links. They rounded everyone up and burnt them in the packhouse." I looked at him, horrified. I knew this kind of pain.
My pack had suffered similarly. "I took the people who were not in the fire and fled. I had to save who I could. Daybreak Pack was on our tail for a while. But we managed to outmaneuver them and came here. I didn't know where else to go. I have no pack anymore. Just five of us are left. Look, I will swear you as my alpha. Just take us in, please." "Charlie, you can stay here. You don't need to join our pack; you are a good alpha."
"Cade, I am not. If I was there, there would be more of us alive. No, we would be better if you were our alpha. Please, I beg you." I thought about it and nodded. I would be there for him if he felt he had to do this. I mind-linked Mark to go get a knife. It took a minute, but he was back. Charlie went through the process, though his joining the pack was slightly different. He gave me his pack and closed it; now all were Shadow Pack.
"There it is done. Now, let's get you a place to sleep; you guys have been running for days. You need rest, and then we can get more into detail about what happened. " "Thank you, Alpha." I snorted. I would need to get used to that. Charlie had been a great friend and an alpha, and he had just handed me what was left of his pack. It was alarming, to say the least. I would understand why Howi would go after us but after Charlie. His pack was tiny. There had not been many people there, so why would he attack them?
Nothing made sense. I would need a complete account when Charlie woke up. I mind-linked Robert. "Everything is okay. I will be up in a few minutes." "Yes, alpha." I looked at Mark, who looked confused and concerned like me. "We need to talk about this. I need to tell Kaya what is going on. Not only that, but we need more information." "I agree. I don't know why this would have happened. But, we need to be even more vigilant." I agreed with him. Things were about to get nasty. I knew that, and this was just the first thing in a long line of ones to come.
