118. Kaya
Kaya
I sat there on the computer. I had never used one of those things, but Helen was helping me. We had to find a place for me to rent while Cade tracked down Howi and killed him. "What about this one?" Helen signed, looking at the huge house. I read it had four bedrooms. "Too big." It would just be Robert and me; we didn't need a big place. Honestly, I was mad at everything. I was trying not to show it.
"Okay, I understand you don't need all the room, Kaya, but Cade said it had to be in a subdivision, and most of the houses for rent in subdivisions have four bedrooms." "Fine," I signed. "Just make sure there is a backyard, please." Helen nodded. We finally found one and called them. Helen did all the talking. It was through a rental company. When she hung up, she looked at me. We just have to go to the rental office and get the key." I looked at her with a vacant expression.
"Come on, Kaya, it won't be that bad. It is just for a little while. And think when it is all over, you will have a little baby and a safe home to bring him home to." I rubbed my hands on my round stomach. "How do you know it will be a boy." I mind-linked her. "I don't. I just think it will be. Most alphas have boys first in the South. It is something to ensure they have someone to take their place when they die. You know the next alpha." I just looked at her.
Yeah, whatever I thought. I couldn't care less about the gender. I hoped Cade would still train them to take over if it was a girl. I mean, he knew we did it differently in the North. He knew we had Lunas that led, not alphas. He should let our child, regardless of gender, take his place one day. But I didn't know how any of that would play out. Nor did I have time to worry about it. I had to spend a lot of time these days answering packs of questions on the North.
They had no idea what they would be walking into. Everyone was so nervous, but I knew they would be fine. Nieva would take good care of them. It would also be good for them to see how others live. They will appreciate things more once they return. A small part of me thought if they returned, I ignored the doubt and continued to move about the packhouse. It was close to lunch, and I was hungry and craving a smoothie. Becky had taken to making me one every afternoon.
It would be weird to go back to having to cook for myself. Not that I minded it. Becky had taught me to make some of the things I liked but had never made before, and I felt I could confidently move about a kitchen without help. I walked into the kitchen. "Luna, it is good to see you." she signed. "Thanks, Becky; I hoped you had a smoothie for me." "Of course I do." She moved, opened the fridge, and handed me a glass with a straw. "You come here at the same time every day. Of course, I would have it waiting for you."
"You are so good to me, Becky." I mind-linked her. I carried on, "Are you going to the north?" "Hell no, someone has to stay and cook for the alpha." "I am sure he can do it himself." "Kaya, I don't know if you know this, but I have cared for the alpha since he was young. I have been the cook for much longer than you think. I will not leave because of war. He needs to eat, and so do the others. Besides, if the worst happens, then so be it. I should have already been dead when we had the last war." I pulled her into a tight hug. "I am glad you are here, Becky." I smiled as I mind-linked her.
She smiled back, and I left the kitchen and went to find my mate. He spent a lot of time in his office now a days. I turned to Robert, who was always with me when Cade wasn't. I mind-linked him. "Well, I hope you won't be too bored with just me for company." "You are not bad company Luna." I smiled, and we continued to head to the office. Once there, Robert nodded, knowing I wanted him to stay outside. I walked into the office with my smoothie in hand. Cade looked up as I walked over to the couch in his office and plopped down on it. I didn't even look at Cade, and I knew he was coming over to me.
"Kaya, are you okay?" He mind linked. "I am not fine, but I am healthy if that is what you are asking. Helen and I rented a house today. I assume you are going to move me in there and then leave?" He didn't mind link back. "Oh yeah, of course, you can't risk us going together. It has to be a covert operation." "You know I will know where you are, Kaya." "I know." I had been giving Cade the cold shoulder. I knew I shouldn't be, but I could not help it.
"Kaya." He mind linked me. "What?" "I need you to cover your tattoo when you are with the humans." I looked at him. "I will not ever do that, and never ask me to again, or I swear to the goddess I will kick your ass." "Kaya, it makes you stand out, and I don't want anyone to know where or who you are." "Cade, I refuse to do that, and I will never cover it or who I am." He nodded. I couldn't believe he asked that of me. It wasn't something he would typically ask of me. "Cade, did something happen?" I mind-linked. Cade didn't respond. "Cade!" I shouted over the link. He nodded and helped me off the couch. Leading me to his desk.
On top of the desk sat a cardboard box. "Inside." He signed. I set down the smoothie and opened it to find a head. I shut the box quickly. "There was a note that came with it." He handed it to me to read it and said, 'This will be you and your bitch mate soon –Howi alpha of daybreak pack.' I sat the note down. Cade mind-linked me. "It was one of the four scouts we sent out to watch his pack. The others have checked in, and they are all okay." I put my hand on his arm, trying to relax him. I leaned into him. "Put him down, Cade." He kissed the top of my head as he mind-linked me. "I will."
