Kaya

I watched as, one after another, men danced with Annalise. I scanned and watched the people as much as I could, as Nieva had instructed me to. Robert was attentive. Making sure I was doing alright. My friends took time dancing with one another and with me. We joked about how weird it was to dress in the clothes we wore or how some women were on full display.

When I was standing next to Robert, a man approached me. His name was Howi, and he was the alpha from the Daybreak pack. I remembered meeting him earlier in the day. He was on the shorter scale of men in the room, and his features resembled those of someone from the north. But I knew of no one other than myself coming and living in the south who was from the north.

He was also an alpha, so he could not be from the north. Men in the north did not lead packs; it was the women. It did not matter if they were of the alpha bloodline or not. I read his lips. "May I dance with you, Luna Kaya." I looked to Robert, mind linking him. "I am going to dance with this alpha." He nodded. He would keep a good watch on me.

I took his hand as he led me. His mouth moved, and I watched closely to see what he was saying. "Now I understand you are deaf and do not speak." I nodded. "That is interesting; I wonder how someone from the north could be that weak." My brows contorted. "I hope you understand that I think it is ridiculous that Cade took you as a mate. The north belongs in the north. Yet here you are, leading a pack. I must say I find it rather odd. You will tell your mate we will never form an alliance with you. I am here for one reason alone, Annalise."

I didn't understand why he was saying all this to me. Why was he even dancing with me if I so disgusted him? I hated the man instantly. Though I tried to remain cordial. I wanted to punch him in the face and show him just how weak I was. Knocking a few of his teeth out would show him I am not someone to be trifled with. He seemed like the perfect match for Annalise. Both had an arrogance that could not be shaken. They thought better of themselves than anyone else. What a sight to behold. Their pack would be known as the most conceded on the continent and the largest.

Something also told me if the two joined, it would bring war and destruction. Though the two would be a good match, it would be horrible for everyone. I mind-linked Cade. "Do not encourage Howi, the alpha of Daybreak Pack, to meet with Annalise. He and her are too similar; it would be a disaster." "Alright, I will do my best. Charlie would be the best match for her, but he would also hate to be stuck with her, and I don't feel right setting him up with her. He is my friend." I felt for Cade; he was in such a tricky position. The dance ended, but before I returned to my place along the wall to watch, someone caught my hand; it was Jack.

"Kaya, do me the honor of a dance." I had no desire to be near the man. He had been cruel and thought of me as a savage. What was his plan? I knew he hated me, and this whole thing was his plan. He wanted his daughter to be with someone who was not her mate and wanted mine to facilitate it. He pulled me in close, his hand going to my waist. He moved, not saying anything at first, then his mouth opened as I read his lips. "You are beautiful as well as a good fighter." I nodded at his compliment. "I have never been brought to a draw when fighting anyone. I always thought Cade to be my equal, but to find it in a woman surprised me."

I let him carry on. "You know Cade is fortunate to find such a mate. I do not believe you know my story, so I will tell you now. My mate was fated. She was not strong, but I was blinded by the bond. She gave me Annalise. We had some rogues attack, and she could not defend herself well and was killed. I could have had a son and several children if she had been stronger. I would not be in this position if she had not been so weak. It is why I insist on Annalise being forged with someone strong. I also found it bad that Cade had given in fate to be with you. I also thought you to be weak as you can not hear and do not speak and that you hunted and lived the way you do had made think you savage. You are neither of those things, though."

"You are stronger than any she-wolf I have ever seen. And now I see you in a fine dress, and the word savage does not come to me now." I looked at him with shock. I didn't see what he was getting at. He said no more. I didn't know what to make of his compliments. Was he apologizing, or was he getting at something else? As the dance ended, he said, "I look forward to seeing much more of you, Kaya." He took my hand and kissed it.

I pulled it away and hurried to get away from him. Cade had been correct; there was something off about him. He wanted something, but I needed to figure out what that was. After two dances with such horrible men, I tried to stay close to Robert. Cade, after a while, finally came to stand with me. He mind-linked me, "This is exhausting." "I have enjoyed people watching." "Well, I would much rather look at you all night." I smiled. He pulled me into him and kissed me, not bothering to care if anyone saw him.

He came into my mind. "I have been wanting to do that all evening. Another thing I would like to do is ride this dress up and feel just how wet I can make you." My breath caught in my throat. He pulled me to him. "Shall we dance again?" I signed "Yes."
