We fought for hours, and it still felt like we were not getting anywhere. I needed to find Kaya. I could not smell her. Just like the rest of my pack, I was covered in blood. It masked the smell of myself and those around me. I fought pushing wolves back and could at least make ground searching for her while fighting. I came across a few northerners. I could only tell by their size. There was no way to know by the color of their fur, as everyone was coated in blood.
I caught a small horde of dead wolves. They were piled on top of one another. Then, there were more that were living on top of the dead ones. I fought my way over to it. Killing everyone who came in my path. I began to work my way into the horde. It took a long time to see who they were fighting, but that is when I caught a glimpse of my mate.
There was the faintest smell of her. She was drenched in blood. I needed to help her. I began to work my way to aid her. Killing the Horde along with her. Finally, I was able to reach her. But when I got to her, she snapped at me. Did she not recognize me? She was moving mechanically. Slashing at me. Bitting me. "Kaya," I yelled over the link. She didn't respond. "Kaya, it is me. Stop fighting me; we need to find Howi so we can end this." She paused for a moment.
Her wolf eyes blinked, filling them with more blood. She had to blink a few times. We moved. The moment would be short before we were swarmed again. There was no way this was just one pack. I knew Howi had gained the largest pack when Jack died, but still, this was more than there should be. The wolves that were here were too vast. "Have you seen Howi?" I mind-linked. Kaya just shook her head. I wanted to check on her. She was limping but not whimpering. I couldn't tell how much blood she had lost because she was covered in it. Not a spec of white showed on her white coat.
Kaya and I moved slowly, working our way through the wolves that seemed endless. We had moved away from the pack lands and were close to the border. I saw it. It was one of our wolves. I sniffed it was Howi, and he was fighting one of ours. I looked around to see Becky holding a little baby in her arms. It was Sol. Two wolves surrounded her. She couldn't make a run for it if she wanted to. I mind-linked Kaya. "Get Sol; I will handle Howi."
I looked at her, but she had already started running toward Howi. I made the decision to get to Sol and free Becky from the wolves that had her under guard. The two came at me at the same time. I mind-linked Becky. "Go now." She took off, running Sol in her arms. The two wolves had to be a beta and a delta. They were strong and had more energy than the others I had been fighting. Howi had them with him, most likely looking for Sol.
One of the wolves bit into my side, and the other scratched my face. I thrashed and thrashed, but the wolf would not unlatch its jaws like Kaya did so many months ago. He had a firm bite into my side. With Kaya, I was able to get her off by crushing her. But I couldn't in this situation. I was fighting two wolfs. If I fell on one, my stomach would be exposed. I would just have to continue to fight one while the other was attached to me by their teeth.
I dug a bit into one and shook it like a rag doll. I went for the back of their neck, hoping to break it by shaking, but I did not place the bit right, and it was too low to break the neck. But I did manage to toss him a few feet away. I shoved my body down on the ground. The wolf biting at my side was slammed into the ground, and as much as I wanted to pin him there, I couldn't. The other wolf recovered and was charging at me.
The wolf who held me had let go, and I was free to move more. My limps hurt from the hours of battle. We had been fighting all night, and the first rays of sun were starting to peak through the trees. I didn't know if this was the end. If I managed to kill these, would I still be able to continue to fight? Would my daughter and mate still live through this? I thought to myself. I kicked, thrashed, and managed to bite the right spot and break one of the wolf's necks on a third try.
I turned to the remaining one. He snarled, and I growled. He was so out of his depth. He was no alpha, just a beta. I would not be defeated by such an insignificant wolf. I didn't hesitate to pull a move from Kaya. I turned and ran from him. He would think I was fleeing. Then suddenly, I turned toward him and charged. As I approached, I leaped into the air, and as I went over him, I dug all four of my paws into his back and bit right above his tail.
My teeth punctured, as did my nails on my massive paws on the wolf. But unlike Kaya, who would hold this position, I kept my teeth on him and pulled my head back, ripping a chunk from the beta. He whimpered. I used my hind paws to dig in. Moving my teeth again, extending my neck, I got a hold of his tail, and then I leaped off, taking his tail with me. I ripped it clean off. The wolf whined and was in a lot of pain. I turned fast, and as he stood there trying to deal with the pain, I bit into his neck, tearing it clean off.
He fell limply to the ground. I knew I needed to help Kaya. She was in bad shape the last time I saw her and had gone after Howi. At least I knew Sol had made it out alive. I ran to where I had seen Howi fighting Robert. As I ran toward where I had last seen Kaya, a bunch of white wolves started to fill up the woods. This was the northerns. They had come just in the nick of time. I ran, trying to find Kaya. She had to be close by.
