94. Cade
Cade
I sat there with Jack. "So tell me what you know about Howi?" I asked him. "What do you mean?" "I mean, tell me what you know of him. I mean, your daughter Annalise mated to him. You are planning on leaving your pack to him, so tell me what you know of him." He made a weird face. Like he knew something I didn't, then went on to say. "Well, he is an older alpha. He was the adoptive son of the last Luna and Alpha of the daybreak pack." So far, nothing I didn't know already.
"He dislikes the North a lot. He told me as much during the tournament." he had told Kaya that as well, which is why I knew I needed to learn more about him. He had threatened her basically, and I was sure he was the one responsible for what happened to our den. "Do you know where he came from before he came to daybreak pack?" I assumed he was from the North. I mean, Howi looked like the other northerns. He was short, his hair was black, and his eyes brown.
"He told me he had been a rogue and ran away from his pack." Interesting, I did not know that bit of information. Jack went on. "He said they did things backward, and he hated them. He really hated his pack. When he told me of them, his face was full of disgust. You know he has alpha blood, and they didn't care. He said they treated him like shit." So, he is a natural alpha, which I assumed but didn't know for sure. "Did he say which pack was his home before daybreak?" "No, he said he didn't even want to mention the name. He wiped them out relatively fast after taking over as Alpha of Daybreak. He wouldn't tell me much about the attack or anything like that. Howie just said they got what was coming to them."
I sat there looking at Jack. "Anything else you know about him." "Well, he is an upstart, in my opinion. He is very, I don't have the right word for it, but he is a man of strong convictions, I guess you could say." Interesting. "You know he does not allow females in the daybreak pack to be warriors or really hold any jobs. He thinks they are for rearing children and other things like women's traditional roles. I thought Annelise would hate that about him. I mean, you know she is a good fighter. Nothing compared to Kaya." He then paused, and it looked like he was daydreaming. My mouth tightened to a line.
He better not be thinking about my mate. That was all that was running through my head. Then Jack spoke again. "But, Annalise seemed to be happy with him. The other night, I talked to her on the phone, and she seemed to be in a good mood. So I assume she is happy in her new role." I nodded. "What can you tell me about daybreak pack?" "Why are you so curious about Howi and his pack?" "Should I not be. We have an alliance, and when you die, Howi will be taking over your pack, and I should know what it will be like. I know he will not align with us because my mate is from the North. We both know he despises the North. So instead of anticipating a friendship, I am preparing for when he comes for us."
"Cade, you don't know that he will come after you because of Kaya." The way he said my mate's name made my stomach churn. What was his obsession with her? "I don't know, but it is better to be prepared than be caught with my pants down. Now tell me what you know about a daybreak pack?" "Well, they are not a huge pack. They are pretty self-sufficient. I know they had problems with money when Howi first took over, but he fixed that fast. He is quite a businessman. The pack itself sits on the southern north coast." "I am aware." "Yes, you know they fish a lot?"
"They do?" "Yeah, Annalise said the pack was big into fishing. She said Howi loves to eat fish. It is his favorite, and the pack eats it, too. They have it a lot." I knew who were big fishermen. The northerners ate dried and fresh fish all the time. At least they had when I was there. "Yeah, she also said they hunt well. The men do, at least." He had to be from the North. "Are there a lot of wild wolves out there? I heard Howi's adoptive parents were killed by wild wolves." "Yes, there used to be, from what I was told. Howi had a lot of them killed after his adoptive parent's death, but they still have a wild pack of wolves. It is smaller now, but Howi didn't want to completely wipe them out. He said it would be bad for the environment."
"Right." Just then, Howi looked off like he was getting a mind link. "It seems your mate attacked one of my warriors." "What?" "I told my warriors to not mess with her, but apparently, they could not keep their mouths closed, and she went after them when they said something disrespectful. I am so sorry. Apparently, Kimi pulled her off, and so did Robert." "I will have a talk with her." He held his hand up. "No need. The fault was with my warriors. They should not have spoken out of turn with her." I looked at him, confused.
Why was he making allowances for her? This was not what I had expected. I am sure his warriors deserved what they got, but for him to say it was not her fault was a shock. I thought he would take the words of his warriors and their side. That is what regular alphas do. That is what I would have done. "I have them here to learn from her, and it bruises their ego that they need to be taught by a woman who is not of alpha blood to fight better. They need to learn and feel inferior, so they lashed out." I nodded. He was acting strange, and I didn't know why. I didn't like the feeling of not knowing what he really wanted.
"Are you going to be here for winter solstice?" I asked. "Well, it is in a few days, so yes." "Are you planning on joining in the festivities?" "If that is okay with you?" "It is fine, Jack, but I warn you, your warriors must be on their best behavior. I will not hesitate to throw them in the dungeon or beat them to death if they ruin this for Kaya. She has been super excited to share this with the pack, and I will not see it ruined." "Cade, I plan on having a wonderful time at the winter solstice, and my warriors will do exactly what I tell them to do." He smirked. His look said that he had plans that I didn't know what they were.
