I sat in the truck with Robert. I had left early in the morning before the sun rose. I had been crying since we left the pack lands. "Luna, I am sorry." Robert mind linked. I didn't even respond; I was too sad to want to engage in any kind of conversation. I had fallen asleep while Cade was talking to our pup. He had not woken me up, but I wish he had. I wanted more time with him. I refused to shower in the morning, wanting to keep his scent on me as long as possible. I hated everything about this. I saw the logic, but I hated it.
Cade had told me he would tell me what was happening, but I knew he would limit the information to keep me calm. At this point, my blood pressure was high, and stress would just make it worse. The sky was grey, just like my emotions. When I saw the sky crack open with lightning, I took it as the Goddess morning with me. Then, the rain began to pour. We drove for what seemed like an eternity. When we reached the house, I looked at it through the rain.
It was a light blue house with white trim and a small front porch. I hurried to get out of the truck and inside. The place was like the others on the street. Robert opened the door for me. I felt cold and alone. I had Robert, sure, but I was away from everyone in the pack. I was away from those I loved. Maybe it would have been better if Kimi had come, but I could not have asked that of her. She had told me she would still come, but I would not be cruel and have her separate herself from her mate now that she had just found him.
The place was already furnished. Cade sent movers a week before we would be here to set up everything. "Luna, are you hungry? We could get some food." Robert signed. I just shook my head. All I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry, and I wanted privacy to do it. "I am just going to find my room and sleep." Robert nodded. "I will go get out bags from the truck." "Thank you, Robert." I mind-linked him. I walked up the stairs, looking for my room. I tried the first three doors, and none had any of my things in them.
When I reached the last door, I opened it to find a huge bed and an all-too-familiar quilt. This was my room. I walked in, not bothering to change out of my wet clothes, and crawled into bed. I pulled the quilt over me. Then I felt him in my head. It was my brother Quill. "Kaya." "Quill?" "Hey, little sis, how is it going?" "Fucking sucks, I am now at my new home again." "Kaya, you know this is best for right now." "I know." "So what is it like with the humans?" "I have been here a total of five minutes. How would I know that?"
"I don't know, just curious. The only time I have spent in their company was when we traveled to the South." "Whatever, so tell me, how is the prep coming for my pack to come stay with you?" "Honestly, great, everyone is actually really excited." "Well, that is good." "From what I hear, you have taught your pack to hunt." "Yes." "Well, I can't wait to find out if you are a good teacher." "Shut it. I am spectacular at teaching. Look out for this kid, Ronnie; he is deadly with his knives." "Ahh, so also teaching the littles, I see." "Well, if they are old enough to walk, they are old enough to throw a knife. Isn't that what dad would say." "Yes." I smiled, thinking about my family.
I surprised myself by smiling; I had been in tears minutes before. "How is my little niece or nephew?" "Making my feet huge as well as every part of me." "I would like to see that. I mean, you were always so tiny, and now, apparently, you are as huge as a mountain." "You know it is rude to call someone fat." "I never said you were, only that you are a mountain, and I think that is a compliment. Mountains are mighty and beautiful." "Geeze, thanks. I will try to remember that when I have to waddle down the stairs to get food." "Come on, sis, you are supposed to get that way when you are pregnant."
I was silent. There was no good comeback for what he was saying over the link. Then he continued on. "Kaya, Mom wants to come down there really badly." "Well, I don't think she should. She has little kids still in the den, and she can't leave them, and she shouldn't bring them down here." "Dad told her the same thing, but both are worried about you. It's not so much about you being in hiding. Everyone knows you can hold your own, but mom worries about the pregnancy." "Honestly, try to tell her I will be fine. I am on a vacation now. I mean, I won't be worried about training or being on my feet all day. Things will be much more relaxed."
That was true from a physical standpoint. But mentally, I knew I would be stressed until I was back with Cade and our whole pack. "That is what Dad and I told her." "Have her smoke some sheesh, and she will be fine." "You can't do that now, can you? Ah, pregnancy, such a burden." "Shut it, asshole." I then continued to mind-link him. "You know they have this plant out here. It is called Marijuana. It is a lot like sheesh. Not as good but effective." "It is a plant?" "Of course." "Well, when everything is safe and settled, I am coming down there and will decide if the plant is an okay substitute." I giggled.
"Look, sis, everything is going to be okay. There is no way the Goddess would have mated you to Cade if it was not meant for you guys to be together. I have thought a lot about it, and I think your union was to bring about change in the South. Not that they necessarily lived badly, but they had moved away from what makes us what we are. You being there has brought that back to the South. And I think the Goddess wanted that." I smiled at the idea. "So tell me, what is new?" I mind-linked, changing the subject to something less substantial.
