Robert and I waited in the OBGYN room. The place was so different from the clinic back at Shadow Pack. I got several looks from the other women waiting. I didn't know if they were staring at me or if they were looking at Robert, who was burly. He resembled a bear. He mind-linked me. "This place is ridiculous, a bit pretentious much?" I cracked a smile. I had been thinking the same thing. I sat there playing with my fingers.

"Kaya, they are calling you." I stood and Robert with me. The woman led us back, making me get on a scale and take my height. Suddenly, the woman stopped and turned to me. "I am so sorry. I didn't realize you were deaf, and here I was talking and not looking at you." I read her lips and then looked at Robert. "It is so nice that your husband here can help translate for you." I began to frantically sign that Robert was not my husband.

"Oh well, you guys are not married. Not everyone has to be to have a baby. I bet you two are excited." My anger was starting to flare, and then Robert's mind linked me. "I told her I am just your friend, and that is all we are, that your husband is a soldier and that he is deployed right now." "What does all that mean." "Just believe me, it will stop the rude remarks." "Thanks." I looked at the women who looked embarrassed to have suggested such a thing.

It was very offensive to say that to someone who was mated that they were unfaithful. It was not something done in our community. Good, she should be, I thought to myself. She led us into a room and looked at me so I could read her lips. "If you would just get on the table, we can go ahead and check your vitals." She pointed to the table, and I went and got on. She did as the doctor back at the pack did, taking my blood pressure. Her eyebrows raised, which I knew meant it was not good. I read Robert's lips. "If you want to ask me the questions you have for her, I can sign them to her since I know you need to put them into the computer."

Robert began to sign for the women talking. "How far along are you?" "Seven months." "And how is everything going?" "Fine, just swelling." "That is because you have high blood pressure. The doctor will talk to you about that." That was the extent of her questions. She turned so I could read her lips. "The doctor will only be a minute." I nodded. Robert looked at me after she left. "The lady was ridiculous." he mind-linked me. "I agree. What an idiot." He smirked.

We sat in comfortable silence until the doctor came in. "Hi, Kaya." I read his lips. "I see you have not been seen by a doctor your whole pregnancy." That was not true. I had seen the pack doctor, but he never sent my records over, considering they were different from human notes. I signed for him, and Robert translated. "Yes, sorry, I have been a bit busy." That was an understatement. "Can you tell me when your last menstrual cycle was?" I looked at Robert and mind-linked him. "I don't know what that is." "It is when you bleed monthly humans do that." "That sounds horrible. What is wrong with them?"

I then signed, telling him. "I don't know." Then Robert said that to the doctor. "That is alright." "Anyways, let's get an ultrasound and check if everything is all right with the baby." I nodded. I mind-linked Robert. "Make sure he does not tell me the gender," and he nodded, relying on what I said to the man. I lifted my shirt, and the doctor went about everything. He turned to me so I could read his lips. "Well, it looks like the baby is in breach. It may turn closer to your due date. Which will be according to your ultrasound on July 1." I nodded, and he continued to talk to me.

"I need to talk to you about your blood pressure. We would call you preeclamptic. Now, there are some drugs I want to prescribe that are safe for you and your baby. If that does not work, we must put you on bed rest." I signed. "I will not be taking any drugs. I already take vitamins and refuse to take anything else." When Robert told him, he looked at me with shock. "The drugs are important and would help." I just shook my head. "Well, okay. Well, when you come in next month, if your blood pressure is not down, then I am afraid you will be put on bed rest." I just rolled my eyes.

The visit soon finished, and I walked out of the office, Robert in tow. "Why is everyone trying to confine me to a bed?" I mind-linked him. "Luna, maybe it would be best if you rested more. I mean, the swelling is not normal." "Not you, too?" "Sorry, Luna, I am just trying to ensure you and the future alpha are safe and sound." I felt irritated, and I retorted over the link. "I am so tired of everyone assuming I am having a son. I could have a girl. And what is it with everyone in the South thinking that women can not lead? It is absolutely ridiculous. We are just as capable."

"Luna, I don't disagree with you, but it is just the way things are done." "Whatever." I got in the truck, not bothering to sign or mind link or anything. I just wanted to stew in my annoyance. I knew I should mind link Cade and tell him about the appointment, but I just wanted to be left alone. Upon getting home, I rushed out of the truck and ran to my room, slamming the door. I wanted to be left alone. I crawled into bed and lay there looking at the ceiling. Everything was wrong. My mate should be here helping me. I should not be having any of these problems. Someone shouldn't be threatening my family. I just growled and began speaking to the Goddess about my displeasure with everything happening.
