135. Cade
Cade
We ran. Kaya had to bite into the other side of the baby board, and both of us carried Sol. Just one of us taking the baby board in our mouth caused too much shaking and was not good for the baby. But moving as wolves, we covered much more ground. Robert had brought back a live skunk. When it sprayed us, it was much more potent than the skunk spray we had concocted at Shadow Pack. When I told her about it, Kaya thought it was funny I had created a spray to emulate a skunk.
We arrived at the edge of the small town. Kaya and I set down the baby board, and all three of us shifted and changed into our clothes. Both Kaya's and mine were still slightly damp. There was not much in town, but there was a small wire transfer location, which I needed. Mark had sent money, and we would need some to get better clothes. Things for Sol were food and transportation, and we had nothing.
The place was so small. There was barely anything there. I had no idea how we would get a car. There was nowhere to rent one or even buy one. We would also need a car seat if we went by car because of Sol. Luckily, we could find a place to stay for the night. If I could find someone with a plane, they could fly us to a bigger city where we could get the things we needed. We were so far in the north that some human should have a bush plane.
"Cade, we can't stay here long." I looked at Kaya, who had just mind-linked me. "Howi will know this is the closest town and will have guessed we are stopping here. We are not too far ahead of him yet." I knew Howi would have recognized our scent. He would be on our trail, and that was certain. If I had people I knew were on the run, I would follow the trail until I caught up with them. It was how I knew Howi was doing that exact thing.
"Why don't you get Sol changed and fed. Robert will stay with you in the room, and I will be back. I just need to find us a ride out of here." I signed. Kaya nodded as she sat on one of the beds in the tiny three-room motel. We had already visited the small store, the only one in this town, and got diapers, clothes, and food. I needed to find out where people resided in this town. I could then find someone to fly us to the closest big city.
I had seen a bar, and I intended to start there. It was already evening the place should have people in it. I walked in and found only a handful of people in the bar. I felt all eyes on me as I walked to the bar. I was the outsider, and this place was clearly for locals only. The woman behind the bar was a more considerable lady. She looked to be about fifty. "Excuse me, do you know where I could find a pilot?" Bush planes were standard in this part of the world.
I knew I had to organize a bunch of things when we came to get Kaya all those months ago from Crescent Moon Pack. The women looked me up and down. "Aren't you too pretty to be in this part of the world?" What did my appearance have to do with what I asked about? I just stood there looking at her. "Yes, I know of a pilot." She pointed to an old man who was sipping a beer. "His name is Merl." "Thank you." She nodded, and I went to see if he would be willing to fly us, if only a short distance away. I didn't want to have to run on foot again if we didn't have to. Usually, I would be okay with it, but with Sol, it could have been better.
When I sent Shadow Pack, I sent them in cars as far as they could go. With so many young kids that could not shift, it didn't make sense for them to run all the way up here. I stood in front of the man. He was definitely older than the bartender. "The bartender told me your name was Merl, and you were a pilot," I said to the man who looked up at me. "She would be correct. What can I do for you?" "I was hoping you could fly me, my wife, my daughter, and our friend out of here. Not far, just to the next busiest city where I could get a car or catch another flight." It felt weird calling Kaya my wife. We were mates so much more than a human agreement called marriage. "I would pay you, of course." He raised his eyebrows at me. "Yeah, I can do that. Be ready by six tomorrow morning." He then told me where to meet him, and I agreed. I felt better now that I had a plan to get us out of here.
With that, I returned to the tiny motel room. When I walked in, I found Kaya passed out in the bed. Sol was still in her arms, also asleep. I looked to Robert who himself was fighting sleep. All of us were exhausted. "Robert, you can sleep. I know you need it. I will keep watch." "Alpha, you need to sleep too." "I will sleep tomorrow on the plane." "You got us a ride out of here?" "Yeah, he will take us to the next big city, and we can either catch another plane or drive." "I think we should drive Cade."
"Why would catching a plane be faster and easier." "Well, it is easy to track flights. I mean, you know when they land where they are, and from what you told me, all of Howi's pack was gone when you went to daybreak pack. I don't think he brought all of his warriors with him. He brought enough, I am sure, to wipe out a pack, but he would not have taken the women and children. And if that was the case, he would have someone watching over them. He has the numbers to have warriors with him and anywhere else."
"Your point, Robert." "I just think it would be less predictable if we drove once we got to the bigger city. Planes have times they land, and they will know our exact route." I nodded. "Okay, I can see your worry, but the best thing we can do is get home as fast as possible. I don't think it will be too big a risk if we fly. But, in the morning, Kaya can decide the best route." He nodded. He had a point, but I also wanted to get home quickly. There is no way Howi would know if we took a plane or a car, so I didn't think it mattered.
