90. Cade

Cade

Kaya and I sat at the table. She had been late to arrive for dinner, but I wanted to wait for her even though she told me to go ahead and eat. She came in, running up to our table and sitting down next to me. "Hey, sorry, I was answering the kid's questions, and it was a lot." She signed. I nodded. It was good for the pack to learn about her. It was vital for them to feel connected to her. Being a Luna of a pack was a lot like being a mother in a sense.

"Oh, Cade, guess what happened today?" she mind-linked me. Just then, Becky brought out a rare moose steak for Kaya, which she looked at and then took a massive bite. She grinned, eating it. "Okay, so you want to tell me what has you so excited." she mind-linked me. "Saka and Len found their mates." I looked at her, astonished. I had not expected that at all. Kaya continued to mind-link me as she tore her steak apart. "Yeah, we were waiting for the teenagers on the field, and two girls came out. They looked like sisters, and then Saka and Len smelled them, and well, you know how the mate bond works."

I was really surprised. Kaya was the first from the north to be mated to someone in the south that I knew about. But now, two of her friends were mated to people from my pack. "This means they get to stay. Though I am sure, they will need to find a new place. The rooms they are staying in are too small for families. I know the deltas have rooms here, but only the single ones live in the packhouse. Oh, and what will their jobs be now that they are joining the pack?"

"Slow down, Kaya." I mind-linked her. "How do you know they won't take them back north?" "You know this already: the men leave their pack, remember when they find their mates. Those girls will stay here, and so will Saka and Len." I had forgotten that. The thought came into my head. Would it be like with Kaya and Nieva would not let them go. Would she insist that they keep their link to the Crescent Moon Pack? I could not allow that to happen. I had made allowances for Kaya, but I couldn't do that if they were staying here. If they were to stay here, they would have to be okay with having me as their alpha.

Would they be okay with that? They were used to having a Luna. I mean, I knew they would follow Kaya. They were her friends, and she would be their Luna, but me. While they have been here, they have been respectful of me, but they also knew they didn't have to do anything I told them to do. "What is going through your mind, Cade." Kaya signed. "Just are they going to be okay having an Alpha? Well, me as the one in charge, I mean, they are not used to it." "I am here, and I will be there, Luna. No reason to worry about it." "Kaya, you are the Luna, and it is true, and you can give commands, but for them, it will not be like with Robert. I will have complete control and the final say in their lives, not you."

She winced when I said these words. I didn't mean for it to come out like we aren't equal because we are. It was more of the structure. Saka and Len would have to know that I was the one who managed things, and Kaya was an aid to that. I knew, of course, that I would only make big decisions with her. But she also didn't control the patrols, dictate the living situation, or make the rules. She did help me lead but was not the main one in control. She did not have the final say. That was me.

"Cade, I am sure they will be fine with it. If it bothers them so much, they could just bind to me instead of you." She mind linked. "Kaya, you know it doesn't work like that. And even if it did, I would say no to that. You are still bonded to Crescent Moon Pack, and you still listen to your Luna." She looked at me with confusion. That was a sore spot for me. I tried to keep it to myself, but it irritated me that she had not broken her connection to them. I felt like Nieva still had the final say in her life. Not that it was my place to dictate her life. But still, I was upset by it. It was good for her, though. She could not use the satellite phone to talk to her family. They did not get mail in the north. If she had cut her tie to them, she could not speak to her family at all unless she was there in person.

"Cade, you know why I keep the connection. And you know Nieva would never make me come back to them. She does this with all men with alpha bloodlines when they find their mates. It is not uncommon at all. We have had guys come to our pack who also don't sever their connection to their old pack. Those with alpha blood always keep their connection. I may not have alpha blood, but I am a Luna now, and seeing as it is like that, she kept me in the line with them."

I knew all this. I knew I was being irrational. Kaya was loyal to Shadow Pack. I knew she would die for anyone in the pack if it came to it. I just worried she would feel the need to also help Crescent Moon Pack if they needed help. I knew it was irrational to think that she would choose them over us, but it was an insecurity I had. I took a deep breath and signed. "I know; I am sorry if that came across as harsh." She nodded in understanding. "So what do you think about them finding mates?" "I am guessing their mates just turned 18." "That is what I think, too. I mean, why else would they be at the high school." She signed.

"I bet you happy they will be staying." "Oh, I am! Though I am surprised they found mates in the south. I knew our mating was uncommon, so to have it happen again surprised me. I know the Goddess knows what she is doing, but it is still strange to me. Maybe more of the northerners should come down here when the weather changes. If Saka and Len found mates down here, others could. Though I don't know what they will think in the north, the community is pretty close, even among other packs." She paused for a long moment, then continued to sign, "Do you think the goddess is doing northern and southern pairing because there have not been a lot of people out looking during the mating season?" "You know I can't speak for the Goddess, but maybe."

I could see the wheels in her head turning. "You should talk to Nieva about having some of the unmated wolves come down and see if they can find mates down here. They could come at the end of the mating season and winter with us. Like Kimi, Saka, and Len did. That would allow them to see if their mate is in the south, and they could also look for their mate in the north." "I will talk with Nieva." "Thank you. Now, where are we going to put Saka and Len? What will they be doing all the time since they will need to contribute and they will be here forever? Now they need a job and a place to live." I smiled at her. The two of us sat there signing and mind-linking, trying to put everything together about what would happen with her friends.
