Kaya
When I brought my group into the woods, I looked at them and mind-linked them. "Okay, I know you all want to hunt, but unlike the other groups' hunting, you have me, so the question is, what do you want to hunt?" I mainly had younger wolves. Ones I taught at the high school. "How about a bear, Luna? You have killed those before." The teen mind linked. "Bears are hibernating right now. We can't get one of those." "I want to get something huge." I internally smiled. "Let's get a moose or a mountain lion." "Let me see what I can smell. It may take a while, but we will get one of those." The wolves began to prance in anticipation. I put my snout in the air and inhaled.
I smelt elk, but I knew they wanted a challenge. "We will go for a run until I find the scent we need." I mind-linked. We took off, and Kimi mind linked with me. "What was that all about?" "I asked what they wanted to hunt." "What did they say?" "Moose or mountain lion." "Let's get a moose. We have enough wolves to take one down safely." "My thoughts exactly. I think a mountain lion would not be the best for this occasion anyway. Last time I got one of those, I got scratched pretty badly." Kimi and I kept pace with the others. Finally, I caught wind of a moose.
We followed the scent until I saw him. It was a male but had shed its antlers, so this would be much easier than if they had a whole rack; we would still need to get the legs simultaneously. A kick from one of these was deadly. "Okay, so I need four of you to volunteer." I said over the link. There were several who wanted to go four the legs, so I just chose them randomly. The rest would surround the beast. Kimi and I would attack both sides of the neck. We knew it would thrash. I looked at one of the wolves. "You will kill the beast once it is down; and you will eat the heart."
The wolf looked afraid. "It is a great honor to make the kill and have the heart.” I mind linked trying to encourage the young wolf. They nodded reluctantly. Everyone got into position, and we all moved in sync, taking the animal down fast. The little timid wolf approached. With the moose on its side, I moved, and she looked at the throat. "Now be fast and bite hard." I again encouraged. "Luna, I can't." "You can; you are letting it suffer by not making the kill. This is a natural part of life." She hesitated and then did as I told her, killing the animal. I showed her where the heart was, and she did as I instructed. The rest of us joined in eating the animal.
I howled, followed by everyone else, before we resumed eating. I looked up to see Jack’s wolf staring at me. Why did he even participate? This was a pack thing. I could understand he wanted to be at the party, I understood that, but why was he out hunting with us. This was made to bond the pack. I ignored him and ate until I was full. We all ran back to where the party was; we were the last group back. I shifted and quickly put my clothes back on. Kimi came up and redid my hair with the wraps.
We had become sober in the shifting process. It was always the case. "I think it is time we drink until dawn." She signed. "I couldn't agree more." We laughed and locked our arms around one another to go find Cade and a bottle of something strong. Cade was waiting at our table. "Did your group have fun?" He signed. "Very, we got a moose." His eyebrows raised. "We got a mule deer." "Good, how did everybody do?" "Good, I was surprised one of the teenagers actually killed the thing. I guess your lessons paid off." I smiled knowing I had taught the kids a good skill.
He looked around and back at me signed. "It looks like everyone is on a high." "Hunting as a pack does that. Now, where is the booze, and the music needs to be playing the rest of the day is frivolity with the pack, lots of drinking and games and dancing, then when it gets dark, we build a fire." I had all the wood ready, already pilled for a huge bonfire. It just needed to be lit. Cade asked me to explain more. So I signed. "The night will consist of a lot of stories and more dancing. People will break off to go have sex. Growing up I saw some couples practically doing it in front of people." Cade began to speak making sure I could read his lips. “Kaya are you saying they would have sex in front of the pack?” My face scrunched up at the idea.
I went on signing. "I am just saying with a lot of alcohol, people tend to lose their ability to care if they are in public and sometimes take it far in front of others. When it gets too much, everyone calls them out, and they go find a place to have sex in private. What the hell made you think I would encourage public fornication?" He smiled. "So innocent." he signed. I just rolled my eyes. "Now come on, let's get some vodka or something. We are both way too sober right now." Confusedly, He looked at me. "Kaya, I am not getting drunk."
"That is part of winter solstice, so you have to. Everyone has to." "Kaya, what about the children? They can't drink?" "Well, I am sure their parents won't care if they have a drink, not a lot, but some." "Kaya?" "Fine, but you and I are drinking, and I will hear nothing more about it now. Come on, lead the way to the endless liquor." He just shook his head. "Fine, a few drinks, but I am not getting wasted." He signed. "Yes, okay, sure, whatever you say." I mind-linked him. I hoped he could tell the sarcasm in my mind link.
I planned to have Cade get just as drunk as the rest of us. I had commanded Robert to have fun and not be on duty tonight. I was sure nothing would happen. Cade would be with me for the rest of the day and night. So, he had no reason to be concerned about me. He reluctantly agreed. I wanted everyone to enjoy their time. This was the year's biggest celebration, and I wanted everyone to feel the spirit of the day.
