Cade
We finalized everything. The plan was in motion. The woman who made the perfume had stayed behind with her mate; their oldest son had taken their youngest to the North. Both wanted to stay and fight for the pack. She had agreed to make a spay of skunk, and I, for one, was glad it was not me. I knew that was going to be a stinky job. Robert gave me a report on Kaya after they went to see the OBGYN. He had said she wanted to be left alone and was in a bad mood.
But Robert gave me the rundown of what was said. I knew Kaya would be upset, and I wanted to comfort her. She should not be going through this without me. But we had a plan now. We had an idea of how to win. Once the scent was made and we could spray ourselves, we would move into position. It would be a process over days, but I was sure it would go fast once everything was in motion. But we would have to wait until the spray is ready.
I hurried off to the training field. It was after lunch training session. The pack that was left was getting stronger by the day. We kept up hunting. We trained as wolves and in our human form. We ran so much distance and sprints every day, trying to push ourselves to the max. Because when the enemy was caught we would need to execute Howi's warriors fast. I told the remaining pack members here that we would be running until dinner today. Everyone looked upset, but I knew endurance was the best defense we would have when it came to fighting.
If the plan failed and we were swarmed, we would have to fight ourselves out. With the numbers endurance needed to be the priority. As far as training in our human form, I demanded it most days. If, for some reason, Howi was using silver, we would not be able to fight as our wolves and needed to know how to handle ourselves against wolves. If silver was used, we would be constrained, and everyone knew if they used silver, we needed to retreat and regroup.
I lead the run as a wolf. We would do laps around the pack borders. It would be a long afternoon. But it was necessary. Mark was on my right, and Charlie was on my left. Kimi ran next to him. The rest of the pack followed behind us. Of course, Charlie could keep up with me. He had alpha blood. It didn't surprise me that Mark kept pace; he was a strong wolf like his father before him. Then there was Kimi. She could keep up. In fact, the northerns that had come were right behind us. They could keep pace, but they were letting me lead.
The northerns where nothing if not good at endurance. I knew the three that had found mates were probably running next to their mates. I ran and thought of Kaya. She would have made an excellent soldier in this upcoming war. She could fight like I had never seen, and her speed was commendable. But, even if she had not been drugged, she would have been pregnant at this time. But, if she had gotten pregnant the natural way, she would be in the North, not tucked away somewhere with the humans.
While running, I got a mind link from Becky, who was busy cooking in the kitchen. I commended the woman for staying. I had known her since I was a child she was younger then. Barely an adult. When our pack first fell, she was one of the few that had lived. She had hidden herself in one of the kitchen cupboards and miraculously survived. Her mate had died in the attack. I knew she had tried to hide a lot of her emotions from me over the years, but I always admired her for pushing past grief and focusing on work. She never let anyone see she was downtrodden. The day after we fell, she was in the kitchen making us all breakfast despite the fact she was in mourning herself. "Alpha, another package arrived." I mind-linked Mark, telling him to keep running and that something was at the packhouse for me. He took over, and I encouraged Shadow Pack to keep running and pushing. Then I ran towards the packhouse.
When I arrived, the package had been brought up to my office by the wolf who stood on patrol along the border. I opened it to find another head of one of the wolves I sent to watch Howi. Another note was encased with the head. "Come and get me if you dare, just know your death awaits you and your bitch. She will die first, and then you and everyone in your pack will follow. You think I don't know you moved them. Trust me, I know everything." I dropped the note and slumped back into my chair.
If he knew that I moved my pack away, he would have to think Kaya went with them. But, hopefully, he needed to find out where I sent them. Even if he did, they would be in the North now. They would be safe there. I at least hopped. I picked up the satellite phone. I needed to warn Nieva of the possible threat. "Hello, Cade." She sounded chipper this morning. "Howi knows that I sent some of the pack away." "I don't know if he knows I sent them to the north, but he knows that a lot of the pack is not here, and he may be coming after you guys." Nieva was silent.
"Hello, are you there?" I practically shouted into the phone. "I am here." "Well, what do you think, Nieva? Do you think he will be able to find you guys?" "I don't know. If he is from the North, I am sure he could, but I don't know if he would come up here himself." "You should kill any wolf you don't know that comes close just to be safe." "Cade, we can't. It is mating season. We get people visiting all the time, not so much these last few years, but still."
"Nieva, if they come for you, You have to run." "I know how to deal with threats; I will take care of your pack like it was my own." I tried to relax, but I couldn't. I needed to know Kaya was safe. If Howie knew the pack had moved out, he would think she went with him. I was sure of it, but I just needed to know she was safe for right now.
