37. Kaya

Kaya

I lay in bed trying to calm down, but I was pissed. How could Cade just leave me here? Fuck this, I thought. I was going to go for a run. I didn't care; it was the middle of the night. I rose from the bed and threw on some light clothes. I locked the door behind me. I was happy we had such high security in the room. No doubt this pack would not respect my boundaries and try to get into our room for some reason.

I took off for the tree line. I quickly stripped and shifted into my white wolf when I reached it. I took off running. This place was different from home. The kids here needed direction. The members of the pack acted more like humans than werewolves. Why did no one hunt? Why did no one eat raw meat? The fact they never did pack runs that, too, was weird.
I thought about Cade saying he took in a lot of rogues to rebuild the pack. So, most of them had broken the rules and got kicked out. What did that say for the character of this pack? I just felt like I was spiraling. I continued to run deep into the woods. I came to a fast-running river and lay down on the bank. I  did something I had not done since coming here to Shadow Pack: I mind-linked my brother. "Quill." "Kaya, how is the south?"

"Honestly, way different than I expected." "I am sure it is not so bad." "They don't hunt, they eat weird things, they don't value mates or dens or anything. They are just so different; I wish you were here." "You are just homesick." "No, it is not that." "It is, little sister." "I have to fight an alpha." "What?" "You remember the woman I crushed at the ball?" "Yeah." "Well, she tried again to get in between Cade and me, and her dad wants retribution because I seriously hurt her while she was a guest here." "Why was she there in the first place?"

"Oh, get this. Annelise's father, the alpha of their pack, is insisting Cade find someone to marry her too. She is not going with her fate. Apparently, that is something they do here. Also, sometimes they straight up reject their mates." He was silent for a long time. "Is Cade really okay with you fighting an Alpha?" "He was reluctant, but I convinced him it was okay. The guy wanted me whipped in silver. This is better." "I don't like what you tell me; their values seem weird." "I agree it is backward. They think we are barbaric, but they are not living the way we were meant to."

"So tell me, what has been going on with you?"  "Isa is due any day." "I wish I could be there." "Nah, you are exactly where you need to be." "I don't know what I am supposed to be doing. I dealt with kids twice already, and I was considered harsh both times." "What happened?" "Two boys who do not get along, so I had them dig a hole." "Smart."

"Then this kid was not listening at training, and I slapped him around." "'Those are normal things to do." "I know that, but here they don't think so. You know they kick people out of packs; they are called Rogues." "That is just." "I know. Oh, and apparently, I am to have a guard." "Yeah, little sister, they are weird." "I wish you were here."

"Why don't you ask Cade if some of us could visit?" "Really?" "Yeah, also, you will need to talk to Nieva." "I will talk to Cade first. We are holding a tournament, so you guys could probably come for that. But you will not be competing for Annalise's hand." "A tournament?" "Yeah, it is something Cade is doing to help pick someone out for Annalise, but it is also to make alliances and show strength. Like a way to show off." "Sounds strange." "It is."  "So tell me what you are doing at the moment." "I am sitting beside a river watching the water flow. There is so much big game here I bagged a moose." "By yourself?" "Yes, I know it was stupid, but no one here hunts, so what was I supposed to do?" "Don't do that again, Kaya."  "I won't. Maybe I should teach others so I don't have to do it alone again."

"You should; it is bizarre that they don't hunt. I mean, half of our form is a wolf. Wolves hunt." I should work with the littles to help them from the start. They just can't talk to me." "Teach them to sign. Thanks to learning sign language, our sisters could communicate before they could speak. ""I will do that, I think." "Good, now tell me about the clothes. You still wearing buckskin." I laughed. I told Quill all about the clothes and the weird food.

He told me about the drama back home, which wasn't much. Someone tried to replace me as pack tracker and wound up getting turned around. It was just some kid, though, so I laughed at it. The storms would be starting soon, so I would need to talk to Cade soon as they could not travel once winter finally started. Whoever came would winter with us.
I was not ready to go back. I was still mad at Cade for leaving me to go visit Annalise. I just stayed there and slept as my wolf until the sun began to peak in the sky. As I was getting up, I caught a scent. It was a fox. My stomach growled. I could go for a fox.

It was not too far off and a leisurely breakfast. I was enjoying the woods when Cade came into my mind. "Where the hell have you been?" "Does it matter? You were not in our bed, so why should I be?" He did not respond. "Jack agreed to the fight." "When does he want to do it?" "Whenever you are ready?" "I am ready now; let's get this over with." "I will tell him we will let you guys fight in the arena." "Fine, I will meet you there."

"Do you want to eat breakfast with me first?" "No, I already ate." I know I could have acted better, but he left me for someone else. It felt like crap, and I did not deserve that. I would use this fight to get out the anger; hopefully, I would feel better after. However, that likely would not happen. I would be in a world of pain once I fought an Alpha.
