Cade

I could not believe she was alive. Kaya was happening, and My daughter was alive. The Goddess had looked down on me and brought her back to me. I could not believe it, but here she was. Standing in front of me. Her legs worked hard to push the sled. I looked down at the baby facing me. My daughter Sol was perfectly healthy and fast asleep, strapped to Kaya's back.

Not only did the Goddess bring her back, but she supplied her to be in the North. I had felt regret for how I had cursed her for damming me into a life empty and void of happiness. But she had done the opposite. I almost couldn't believe it. Only this was happening, and I could reach out and touch her. That was the only way I knew this was real.

Kaya stopped the sled. Robert stopped next to ours. Why had we stopped? I had been so engrossed in looking at Kaya and Sol that I had not realized we were back at Crescent Moon Pack. I looked around, and no one was there. It was desolate still. Kaya moved off the sled to go look around. She mind-linked me. "Don't go into the tents. They may not be here, but still, we don't want to disturb their dens. Tell me, Cade, you didn't have anyone go in the tents when you checked." "I didn't. I just had the pack poke their heads in and look."

She nodded in approval. I knew better than to cause harm, which Kaya had experienced when someone entered our den. Kaya, Robert, and I searched everywhere. But there was no sign of anyone. It was like they had vanished, just like when I came here days ago. Kaya tried to mind link Nieva, but like Kimi, she got no response saying something was blocking her link. Robert asked. "Do you think Howi has them? I mean, he could have used silver?"

"That can't be the case. There is no sign of a struggle. There is no sign of anything." I replied. Kaya came to me. "The boats are all gone. We had a lot of them, and now they are not there. But the sleds are still here." She signed, "Does that mean they left?" I asked. "I don't know where they could have gone. Even if they got in the boats and took off, I should be able to link Nieva. Cade, did you try to call her?" "Mark did when he got back to Shadow Pack, but he didn't get through," I remember linking Mark while I was out searching for Sol. I had been delirious, but I remember the conversation. He had implored me to come home and that Sol would die and that Kaya already was.

He had been in a state much like my own, not knowing if Helen was alright. But he had to know she was alive. I could still feel her, as well as the others, over the pack link. They had not died; I knew that for sure. "I don't know what to make of this." Kaya signed. "Should we wait for them to come back?" Robert asked. Kaya looked at me. For once, I didn't know what to do. I needed to find our pack, but I also couldn't stay away from the part of our pack that was back home. We knew everyone in the pack was alive, and that should have brought me comfort, and it did in a way, but we needed answers.

Just as I was trying to think of something to say, I heard the sound of a plane. "Fuck, into the trees," I yelled and grabbed Kaya's hand and pulled her to the tree line Robert in front of us. There was a plane, and it was circling. "It has to be Howi." Kaya mind linked me. He had found Cresent Moon Pack. He had found where they lived, but like us, he wouldn't find them. "They are going to come and search here. We need to go." Robert said.

I looked at him. I wanted to stay just to see Howi, so I could kill him. Kaya looked at me, and she knew me too well. She signed. "We can't stay Cade. There will be way too many, not just Howi, and there are only three of us and Sol. We have to go." I looked at her and saw she was pleading for me to see reason. "They will probably land at the research station and hike in. Like you did when you came to get me." I nodded, agreeing with her. We would flee. I didn't want to leave; I wanted answers and revenge, but as I looked at Kaya, I knew I was not ready for her to die again. I needed to have both Kaya and Sol safe. "Let's take the Sleds and get out of here." I signed.

"We can't." She mind-linked me. I looked at her, confused. Using the sleds would be the fastest way to get out of here. "They will track the sleds we have to go on foot, and we have to cover our tracks." Kaya signed. "Kaya, we will be too slow. They will catch up." She looked concerned, and then she signed. "We will cross and go down the River a little, and then they can't track us. Once down the River, we will skunk ourselves and continue on foot until we reach a town." I looked at her in shock. She wanted to do what. "But the water won't it be freezing; we will freeze to death."

"We will go as wolves. Our fur will protect us." She mind-linked me. "What about Sol? She can't shift. She will freeze to death." "I will shift first. You will secure the baby board to my back. I will not let the water touch her." She looked like she meant it. She would not harm our daughter. "Kaya, you are a small wolf. I should take her." "No, the board won't fit on you. We don't have enough fabric to secure it for you. I will take her. But we need to go now." Robert looked between us, wondering what the plan was.

"We are going to the river," I told him, and he looked just as horrified as I had. "Come on, we must move fast, or they will catch up." She signed. There was no time we needed to leave right away. We could not risk grabbing the supplies or being seen. We had only a limited time to get away and ensure our tracks were covered. Kaya took off in the direction she knew would take us to the River. I sent another silent prayer to the Goddess to help us if she could. I thought she had already done so much, but it wouldn't hurt to ask for help.
