Cade and I trained every day together. It had been a long summer. When the weather started to change and, still we had not heard from the rest of our pack. Cade and I began to worry. The weather was changing, and soon it would be winter. When winter came, there would be no way to get to the North, and we didn't know what was going on. The lack of intel was starting to worry us. The pack had been asking that we go back to the North to search again.
But Cade and I both knew nothing was to be found in the North. Sol was now much more active now. She had begun to learn how to roll over, and she would do it all the time. Cade swore she would be crawling soon, and I had to agree with him. I knew alphas advanced much faster than other wolves. She would no doubt be running soon.
Becky would watch Sol for me while I trained with Cade. Every morning and every afternoon. I had begun hunting again, which made me so happy. Cade often went with me. But the pack had become restless with so much of us gone. Cade and I were lying in bed, both reading something, when Cade slammed his book down. I looked at him concerned. "Cade, what is it?" I mind-linked. "There is a messenger with a package." Both of us shot out of bed, and I grabbed Sol, and we ran downstairs to see what it was.
When we reached the foyer, one of our wolves had a large box in his hand. He was covered in blood. I watched his mouth move as he spoke. "Alpha, I killed the wolf who had the box. He was alone but trying to cross into our borders." He sat the cardboard box down. Cade and I slowly approached it. Me holding Sol tighter to my body. Cade opened the box, and his face was confused. I peered in and saw it was a head. Only this time, it was not one of our wolves.
"This is someone from the north." I mind-linked Cade. You could tell by the long hair of the man and his color. "Was he part of Crescent Moon Pack?" I just shook my head. I had never seen the man before. "Howi must have found some other Northerns, but he didn't find Crescent Moon Pack or the rest of Shadow Pack." I mind-linked. Cade looked around in the box, and then he pulled out a small note. I watched as he read it, his face contorted as he grew angry.
He handed the note to me, and I read it. "You think I have forgotten about you and your bitch your wrong. I couldn't find where her little pathetic pack was, but I did find others. If you thought it would go unnoticed that your mate was alive and doing well, you were wrong just know that she will be dead soon enough, and that little bitch daughter too. I heard you were going to make her the next alpha, and I will not let that happen. You have brought this on yourself, Cade, and I will destroy your whole pack. No amount of training will save you when I come."
I looked at Cade, who was fuming. Howi had not just threatened our pack but had specifically threatened our daughter. This was bad. Cade's lips moved. "Burn it all." I needed clarification as to what he was talking about. But it didn't take long until the pack was assembled in front of the packhouse. I stood next to him as he spoke. I couldn't get a good look at his mouth, and I had no idea what he was saying. The cheers of our pack ran out in the night, and then everyone was running off into the woods, shifting and howling. What was going on?
Cade turned to me. "What is happening?" I signed. I was so confused. It was like he read the note from Howi and a switched flipped he had not stopped to tell me what was going on. I had been left in the dark for over an hour. "Go inside and go to bed. Robert will watch out for you. I will be back in a week." "Cade, what is going on? You can't just leave now. Howi is going to be coming for us." "Kaya you can't leave Sol otherwise I would take you but she needs you." "What the hell is going on?" "We are burning down everything of Howi's. We will start at Daybreak. No one is there and no one will be returning it will be ash when we are done. The lands will be salted and water will be poisoned. The whole place will be uninhabitable. Then we are going to their old pack lands and doing the same thing there."
I just stood there looking at him like he was nuts he had lost his mind. "What, why would you do that?" "I want Howi to feel that he has no home. He doesn't deserve one, and since I can't figure out where he is right now, this will have to do." He mind linked. "But, Cade you can't destroy everything of theirs what about the children they will need a place to live when they come back."
Cade's face was hard. "Howi thinks we are weak, and I am anything but. He thinks he can threaten my family, my pack, and there will be no response. He is wrong. I will destroy everything he has. And when I get my hands on him, I am going to rip his head clean off. Now please, Kaya, go back upstairs with Sol." I was worried about him leaving. I didn't think it was a good idea. Hem and most of the pack would be gone, and that was just what I thought Howi would want.
After Cade destroyed their homes, they could always come here and take what was ours, but I knew there was no point in talking to Cade about this. His anger was clearly winning over his brain. I crawled back into bed and held Sol close to me. This is what Howi wanted. Cade had not yet given into his anger and made a mistake but this was a mistake this was anger making his choices and I worried this would get us into more trouble.
