The day went by in a blur. Cade and I went around and met with other alphas. Who had a million questions about the North? No one knew much about it, and they all were curious. I never answered their questions as I didn't talk. Cade would answer for me if he knew the answer. It was after lunch when Kimi returned from the day's challenge.
She was covered in blood, but the small wolf statue was in her hand. She was the first back I ran to her. I signed, "Kimi, what happened? What is with all the blood?" "Those assholes tried to take what I had got. They shifted and attacked me, so I fought them." A few people came out of the woods after her. They were naked like her, and one had a severe wound on his chest. I shielded her, trying to get her someplace to get some clothes. I gave her my jacket to wrap up in.
"Helen, bring me some clothes. I need some now for Kimi." I mind-linked Helen. Helen came up with some jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt. A few hours passed when Len emerged from the woods with a golden necklace with a small moon pendant. It wasn't long after that when two of Shadow Pack returned with an object: a medium-sized stick.
All three items were found, and this challenge was over. Everyone was called around for awards. Shadow pack had found the most challenging object as it was wood and blended into its surroundings. Only its smell was the only indicator that it was one of the objects. But they also were the last to finish. The first place actually went to Len as his object was the second hardest to find as it was buried. He would have to have smelled it below the surface. He also had been faster in returning, so he placed first. He would have to have smelled it below the surface.
Kimi came in third as she found hers in a tree and had to climb to get it. So, the North took first and third, and Shadow Pack placed second. It was an individual challenge, but it was clear Shadow Pack worked together. That was also the reason that we were placed second. The two of Shadow Pack came up to me. One of them mind-linked me. "You were right, Luna. Tracking the trail was what led us to it. The smell helped us, but it was such a faint smell trail." "Good, I am glad." "I will say we suck at tracking. We definitely need to work on it. That is why it took so long. We kept mistaking the trail for something else."
"Good, I am proud of you," I told them over the link. I was happy that Shadow Pack placed second. I knew their tracking was not as good as the others, but they had found the most complicated object and done it with each other. I could not be prouder of them. "Dinner has started; you guys should grab some food," I said over the link.
Cade was next to me. He mind linked me. "I'd say that went well; we placed second because of your advice." "Yeah, I am glad." "Your friends did great, too." "They have good noses. Smells are constantly being snowed over in the North. The scent is not always strong. They are used to it." "Well, they knew what they were doing." I smiled. He had been right. If my friends had done as I told my pack to do, they would have found the objects much faster, but they had purely relied on their sense of smell.
"I am sorry we didn't place first, but I am glad Len got first." "Do you ever wonder if the other packs will see the north as a threat?" "Even if they did, it is not like they could do anything about it. They would not be able to survive in the North, so why does it even matter if they feel the North is a threat?" "I guess you are right." I looked at Cade. He looked like he was so focused.
"What are you thinking about." I mind-linked him. "I am thinking about the fights that will be happening on the last day of the tournament." "What about them?" "Some of the other packs want to see you fight; it was talked about a lot last night over dinner. "Who would I fight? I mean, who would be equal to fight with me?" "They talked about you fighting another Luna, a top warrior, and another Alpha after Jack opened his mouth." This was ridiculous. They wanted me to perform like I was something to be examined.
"Well, I am not fighting a fucking Alpha again. I got lucky with Jack, who is to say I would get lucky again." "I agree." "Cade, I don't want to fight anyone; you said I would not compete, so why would I need to show them what I could do?" "If enough demand it, we must do as they ask." "Why?" "Because we are here in comradery, and it would be bad if we just forgo what they all want or at least the majority. Since we are here all as friends, at least for the time being."
This was stupid. I mind-linked him. "How is it going with Annalise?" "Well, a few top warriors have straight up asked for her to be their mate, but I think they are more interested in becoming an alpha by mating with her. She turned them down. Howi and Charlie, I believe, are her top choices." "Howie? No, he is bad news." "What did he say to you to make you hate him?" "He said that I was bad for Shadow Pack and that the North is trash, basically. Just a lot of stuff that was not nice."
"Why didn't you say anything?" "I said he was not to be trusted. That should have been enough." We made it to our room. "Look, I don't want to talk anymore. I just want to sleep." "Okay, little mate, go to bed." I stripped and climbed into bed. I just wanted to get to sleep. The day had been long.
