Mark said, "Only one warrior meets your criteria." "Only one." "Well, rejecting your mate is not common in our pack. And if, for some reason, they have been rejected or have rejected their mate, they may have chosen someone else. The only one who had a mate that died is Robert." "Robert, the new guy." "Yeah." "She can't just have one guard.” "I don't know. She will be okay with it. She can handle herself in a fight. Let her have one.

"That is not how it is done, Mark." "I know that. But she is different than us. She does things differently. And honestly, it is awesome she didn't want anyone to forsake their family. Or even give up the possibility of having one. Annelise would not even bat an eyelash."  "You're right. I should just let her have one guard."

I look up to see we are the last two in the hall. After dinner, everyone clears out. Those without night shifts are free for the rest of the evening. Everyone worked hard all day, so they should have their nights accessible.

I left the dining Hall and went to go find my little mate. I knew she planned on talking with Becky, so that was an excellent place to start. I went into the Kitchen, and there was Becky; she smiled, but there was no Kaya. "Oh, Hi, Alpha." "Hey Becky. Did Kaya come to talk with you?"

"Yeah, she did. She is kind of awesome." "Oh yeah?" "Yeah. She doesn't mind putting in work. It is refreshing." I was starting to get a sense of that. She did things in her own way. She was brash but effective. "You know she is going to be doing all of your laundry. And the one cleaning your room."

"I figured as much. I take it she explained the whole den thing." "Yeah, I have never heard of anything like it. I know wolves in the wild have dens. But I don't think they are as territorial as Kaya is over hers." "I think you're right." "I have already instructed the staff to not go to that floor altogether." "Thanks." Do you know where she went? "No, sorry." "Alright, well, thanks again," I said as I left the room. I figured she would be in our room. But when I got there, the space was empty. I mind-linked her. "Kaya, where are you." "On the way back to our room." "Oh, okay."

She came into the room with the book from earlier. She walked over to the couch and sat down, looking at it. She would be busy, so I could also occupy my mind with a book. We settled into the sofa and were deep in our stories when she moved her legs off me. She mind-linked, "Boys are done. I need to go take care of them. Do you want to come?" "Sure."
She put the pen back into the book and set it down. I used a bookmark and then got up. Once we had reached the boys. Kaya looked at them. After a few seconds, I saw them staring straight ahead as if they were being commanded. The boys looked at each other and then went off in different directions.

Kaya looked at me and smiled. I mind-linked her. "What the hell are we supposed to do about this hole?" "They will come back tomorrow and fill it in. What do you say about returning to our den and trying to find another way to amuse ourselves with more than books?"

I woke up to a loud feral growl followed by a knock on the door. I stroked my little mate's arm, calming her down. "What is it?" "We are here to install the security you requested, Alpha." Kaya looked at me. I knew she needed to know what was going on. I started to talk so she could read my lips.

"Kaya, they need to set up the security system for the room." I felt her response in my mind. "Why?" "Because Annalise is coming today, and I don't trust her not to try something. Seeing as you said that someone could really fuck you up if they entered the den. I just thought extra security would be good." "What kind of security? " "Retina lock on the door."

"They are wood. They can break the doors down, so what is the point of whatever security you are installing?" "They are replacing the doors with metal ones." "Are they going to step foot in my den?"

She growled. In truth, the growl was intimidating. I could see that it frightens others. "No, they will do it from the hallway. They have been instructed to not enter the room." "I want to watch them do it." "We can watch together?"

She looked relieved. "Why don't we get on some clothes, and we can open the door. They know not to cross the threshold." She nodded. It didn't take long for me to open the door. "You can step in the doorway, but do not enter the room."

They nodded. The installation took less time than I thought. But once done, one of the men accidentally placed his foot in the room. Then it happened so fast. Kaya was across the room. Growling, gnashing her teeth. I quickly grabbed hold of her. She was mid-shift, and it was getting hard to hold her as she became her wolf.

She snapped, and the man backed away. "Close the doors and go," I yelled. The doors slammed shut. I got a tighter hold on Kaya. After a long while, she shifted back. She was covered in sweat. I could see she was still in distress. I pulled her back on the bed and stroked her till she was calm.

I couldn't imagine what would have happened if Kaya had gotten ahold of the man. I mean, she was ready to tear into him. She was like some feral beast. Not to mention, she was in horrible distress after the whole incident. I can't even fathom what shape she would be in if someone entered the room. I mean, that was just a foot.
We had missed lunch when she finally felt up to leaving the room. We were eating in the Kitchen when Mark's mind linked to me that Annalise was now on pack territory. I looked over at Kaya, who ate an almost raw moose steak.
