12. Cade and Kaya
Kaya
Her face fell. I had to remember these people were from the south. They had indoor plumping. It was something they were not accustomed to. When I went down south, I had told Quill that I thought it was crazy how everything was so readily available.
Mark began to laugh as he marched into the woods. Helen made a face and then walked into the woods behind him. I turned around, and Cade and I walked away from the tree line. I watched as his whole body shook with laughter. He mind-linked me, "Did you see Helen's face?" I smiled; it made me happy to see him so happy. It was amusing. After a few minutes, the two of them both returned.
"See, not so bad." I said over the link. Helen made a face like it was the worst thing ever. I smirked. Mark then said something, but I didn't catch it as he didn't mind link, and his face didn't stay focused on mine so I had no clue what was said. My mother's mind linked me. "I got the food ready." I linked "Come on, Cade. Food is ready." He told Helen and Mark, and they all followed behind me. We walked past many people, and quite a few chuckled as we passed. It was probably about what happened while we were gone. My father said Mark and Helen had been amusing. I don't know what happened, but I felt my pack would be talking about it for a long time.
We came to the tables around the big fire that was always burring no matter the hour. My whole pack took turns manning it, making sure it never went out. I mind-linked Helen. "Helen, let's go get the food. My mother has it. The guys can stay here and wait till we get back." Helen and I began to make our way to my family's tent. I wanted to get to know her more. I mind-linked her. "So, you and Mark, how long have you been together." "Oh, um, since we were 18. We found each other the day after my birthday." "So, I take it he was from your pack." "Yeah, our pack is really big, so it is common for us to find our mate in it." "Really, how big is it?" "A couple hundred." "What? Do they all live together?"
"Sort of, we have a town. Some humans live there, too, but the bulk comprises of our pack." "So, how do you bond with everyone when there are so many." "Umm, we have gatherings where we all get together." "You all don't eat together for all your meals?” I questioned over our link. "I mean, some of us do. Usually, the alpha, the beta, and the gammas all eat together. Then various other people sometimes join us."
"What about training?" I questioned "We do that too. Not everyone because some are too young and old, but everyone from 15 to 40 trains." "But older people can fight, too." I mind linked. "Yeah, they can, but Cade didn't want them to have to come to training anymore, seeing as they already know how to fight. So, unless they are trainers, they usually just go about their business." "Oh." "I take it is different here." "Yeah." "A lot of things are different here." "I can see that." Helen mind linked.
I began to laugh; I could tell Helen and I would be friends. We finally reached my family's tent; we stood outside, and I introduced her to my mother and siblings. As we walked about, she commented on how my mother, and I had the same tattoo. I explained the significance of it. "That is pretty cool." Helen linked. "I think so."
When we returned to the tables, we looked but didn't see the guys anywhere. I looked around but couldn't see them. I mind-linked some of the pack members. I then mind-linked Helen. "They are out on the tundra. They will be back when they are done." "Done?" She said looking at me. "Yeah, the younger boys wanted to test their strength." "Test their strength?" "Yeah, probably something dumb like seeing if they can split the wood without an ax." "What?"
"I don't know. It is stupid. They think it is so cool, but it is much faster to just chop it, but boys have to make everything a game." "Sounds ridiculous." Helen said looking down at the food. "It is. Let's eat. I am not going to wait around for the guys. I am starving." I mind linked. She took a bite of the meat. "So, what is this?" "Seal." "What?" "It is a seal." She put her food down. "Do you not like it?" "I just, um, lost my appetite." "Okay, I guess." She smiled. I could tell she was trying not to be rude. But it was obvious she did not care for how we lived. She was nice about it, though. I spoke to her again in my head. "Helen, it is okay if you don't like it. It won't bother me. I can always get you some smoked salmon or caribou if that is better for you."
"I am not trying to be difficult; I swear." She said looking ashamed. But she kept her face facing me so I could read her lips. "Really, it is okay; how about some moose jerky it is delicious." She was a guest, and I didn't want to make her uncomfortable or unwelcome. I understood, she wasn't used to living like this. Eating things like this. "Jerky sounds good."
"Okay I will have Ama and Aki bring you some." "Thank you." I mind-linked my mother, asking her to send out some jerky with the girls when they brought out the water, "It is no problem, really. They would be bringing out some water anyways, so it isn't any big thing." We didn’t have to wait long. My sisters appeared with water and Jerky. They began to laugh. I shooed them away and then looked back at Helen. I mind-linked her.
"So, what happened last night? My sisters can't stop giggling about it. " "Oh, um, well, Mark and I got really drunk. I remember smoking something and then it is kind of blank, I think from the drinking. , so I couldn't tell you. "Okay, well, I will find out." "I rather not know what was so funny. I just nodded at her. I take it she was already embarrassed and didn't want to be more embarrassed than she already was. We had finished eating when the men had come back. They were red in the face as they took there seats I pushed their food toward them.
