I sat at the head table, my little mate beside me. She had been silent the whole car ride home. All the stuff we bought would be going with her just in case she had our baby while war waged on. I had a call with Nieva later after dinner. Kaya was sure she would accept Shadow Pack seeking refuge there. I had to admit it was a massive blow to my ego that I, was an alpha, was having to send away some of my pack because I was sure I could protect them.
But my ego would have to handle it. I would not, under any circumstances, let another massacre happen to this pack. We had barely survived the last one. I would not be in Charlie's position. I looked up from my table, but he was not around. Go figure, he had missed all the meals in the packhouse since he had come here. I figured it was due to being ashamed. I understood why he was.
I would feel the same way if I had been in his position. But I don't know what he could have done to change what happened. Kaya's hand rested on my thigh. She leaned back in the chair, her round belly pushing out of the dress she wore. I would miss the rest of her pregnancy. One more month with her. Then, I would have my head in the game, and we would hunt Howi out. We would lay traps. We would sabotage his pack and draw a fight out. It needed to be done quickly and with brutality. He was a threat we just couldn't afford.
My eyes locked when I saw Charlie walk into the dining room. So he decided to crawl out of his hole then. But something strange happened. He began to sniff the area. I watched Kimi rise from her seat, her nose doing the same thing. I watched as they came together. I looked at Kaya, who was watching the whole thing. She had a huge smile plastered across her face. I turned my head back to watch the two embrace. Charlie had done what Kaya had said, and the Goddess gave him a second chance, mate. I could feel my own smile forming on my face.
Charlie deserved a second chance, mate. It was not like with Robert, who knew his mate; no, Charlie had only met her. Shared a few kisses and did not even seal the bond. He had only the feel of the mate bond but had yet to complete it. Kimi was a good match for him. They began kissing when Charlie pulled her out of the hall. I looked back at Kaya, and she signed. "I knew if he did what the Goddess likes us to do, he would be rewarded and Kimi well Goddes, she deserves it more than anyone. She has wanted a mate her whole life; we talked about it as girls. She has waited patiently, and I am was so fucking happy for her."
I squeezed her hand that rested on my thigh. She mind-linked me. "So she will be here to fight with you. You are lucky to have her. She is one of the best." I looked at her confused and mind-linked her. "What do you mean? I thought she was going to come with you and Robert." "She was, but now she found her mate. A mate who will stay and fight for his revenge. She won't want to be parted from him after she has waited so long, and I won't ask her to."
I looked at her in worry. I had expected her best friend to be less lonely for her. "I could just send Charlie with you guys." I mind-linked. She just shook her head and mind-linked me. "Charlie deserved to be a part of the fight. He deserves his revenge, and by Goddess, I want him to have it. No, Kimi will stay here with Charlie, and you will have a great, reliable fighter. Robert and I will be fine on our own. We can go find human things to occupy our time. What do they do every day anyway?" I knew she was changing the subject. But I thought better to indulged this line of questioning verses making her think about the fact she would be without her best friend or mate for who knows how long.
I signed. "They work." "Will I need to work to blend in?" "Fuck no, you will take this time to relax and try to stay off your feet; you will read and watch tv, maybe go to the movies and out to eat, go get your feet rubbed, maybe go for walks, but nothing crazy." "Sounds boring," I smirked.
"You know a lot of human women would love to spend their pregnancy like that." "I am not human and do not buy into being lazy." "You are anything but lazy. You need to take it easy, which is what is best for you and the baby. It is actually going to be good for you to relax for a while. I don't think you have ever been able to do that." She stared at me and didn't bother to respond; her face turned back to the deltas who ate in the packhouse with us. Then she mind-linked me. "I may not be up doing things but bet your ass I am going to be talking with our pack every day. The ones in the north, answering their questions and helping anyone in our pack in any way I can."
I smiled. "That is my mate, the strong, determined Luna." She turned to me and nudged me playfully. She had not grown accustomed to compliments since being here. She was blushing as she looked away again. Mark turned to me and started to say something. "How was the trip today? Did you get everything you needed?" "Yes, actually we did." "Helen is excited to see what Kaya has got. I swear she can't wait until July. She has wanted to be a mom for so long." "Well, I am sure she will be good at it." "So, any plan on the Howi situation?" "We need to talk about a lot of stuff, but that can wait until tomorrow morning. I need to talk to Nieva first, and then you and I will finalize everything."
He looked at me quizzically. "This is going to be hard on the pack." He knew what I was thinking before I even said anything. He knew me too well. "It will suck, but it is necessary." "I agree no more mass murder, not during our lifetime and hopefully not ever. I don't think I could go through that again. Seeing those faces, the bodies we had to burn that day." I nodded, that day still etched in my memory, and like Mark, I would not relive that.
