123. Cade
Cade
The morning came, and I waited for Kaya to mind-link me, which she did every morning when she woke up. Even before she left, I noticed that she had started to sleep in later. Growing a werewolf was a lot of work. It was no surprise to me she slept a lot. Today, I would meet with a few people, and we would strategize the best way to take out Howi. Kaya and I reviewed some ideas yesterday, and I liked her suggestion of setting a fire. But that would not be enough.
I was eating breakfast with Mark, neither of us talking. In fact, no one in the packhouse was talking. I knew it was because they all missed their loved ones. Everyone, including me, was sullen. I felt Kaya's mind link me. "Cade, good morning." "Good morning, love. Did you sleep well?" "Yes, I wish you could see my toes." "What about them?" "Robert and I went to the aquarium yesterday and got pedicures after lunch. I had them paint them bright pink. It is so cute." I couldn't help but crack a smile." "Oh, and Robert had his toes done in green." I nearly spit out my juice. "Robert got a pedicure, too?" "Well, yeah, I was not going to get one alone." I looked at Mark and told him.
That made him laugh. Which made me happy to see him feel some joy now that Helen was gone. "Anyways, I plan on going to the library today. I don't know what else to do with myself, so I figured I could do some reading in the meantime." Kaya mind linked. "I think that is a great idea." "Well, anyways, mind linking me later. I want to know what your plans are." "I will I love you." "Love you too." Then, she dropped the link. Mark was still smiling.
"So Robert really got a pedicure." "Apparently, and his toes are green." Mark laughed again. We finished the rest of our meals in silence, but the joy we felt was short-lived as everyone who was not training today filed into my office. We needed a strategy. I started by telling them everything Kaya and I discussed, and they agreed that a series of fires along the border should be our first wave. The next part was more challenging to plan. We needed to draw out Howi. He was the one who needed to die after he was gone; then, they would have no one to lead them.
One of the Northerns spoke up. "Look, I have no idea how to plan a war or win one, but I know how to set traps, specifically snares. Why don't you put traps around the border, draw them out into the series of traps, and then gut them when they are caught? If you have enough, it will take out many of them in one go. You would just have to dispatch them before they can get help out of them." Mark questioned him. "I think this is a good plan, as well as fires, but they will smell if a bunch of wolves are around. Sure, a few could slip by unnoticed, but the number of traps you suggest we set would mean many of us would have to be present to set them." "Just use a skunk." The northern said. Everyone looked at him confused but Kimi who seemed to know exactly what he was talking about.
"Skunks?" I questioned. "Well, yeah, you just get sprayed, and your scent is covered. We always use it when we are hunting and it is windy. We don't want the prey to smell us, and when you have to fight against the wind blowing your scent toward them, you find a skunk. Believe me, it is easier than you think and get sprayed. It masks your scent. Sure, you stink, but there is no way to know you were a wolf. Are you telling me Kaya never told you about scent covering?" I just shook my head.
"Well, she would know all about that. Her nose sniffed out those suckers more than I can count." I gave him a half smile. "So we set fires and kill all the warriors that appear to put them out. We need to set several fires. The more people that respond, the better." Mark interjected. "And what if every day people come to put out the fires along the border." "Mark, do you know any alpha that sends civilians to put out fires?" "No, the warriors always respond to threats, and fires are threats." "Exactly." I went on. "Then, we skunk ourselves the next day and set the traps. As many as possible, I want the place surrounded by traps. Not just snares but pits with spears at the bottom. I want it so that if they venture into the woods so much, they are caught or killed. Then we go wash and get the smell gone. Then, we show our hands, drawing them out by surrounding them. It will be a close call with their numbers, but if we move fast and have enough traps, they should be able to be contained."
Charlie then spoke. "Cade, it is a good plan, I give you that, but we don't know the area well. It is more than a two-day run to their pack territory. How will we surprise them? Where will we wash the scent off? Will we find the skunks there? I think there are a lot of little details that you are missing. The number of pits and snares we need is well over a hundred if you want to make a dent in their numbers." I knew he was right. We needed to know the topography of the area. We needed to move without being noticed.
We would need to finesse the details. "You're right, Charlie. At least we have a direction now. " I looked at the northern. "Can we manufacture the smell?" "I don't know. I never tried." I mind-linked Mark. "Anyone here know how to manufacture scents?" "Not that I know of, but there is a woman who is really good at making perfumes. She makes them for some of the she-wolves. Helen likes to buy a spray she makes to make our bathroom smell like roses sometimes." "Goo,d we need to visit her. She may be able to make a spray. It will eliminate the step of finding a skunk."
"Okay, I want everyone to think of how to pull this off, and tomorrow, when we reconvene, I want to hear ideas so we can get this done sooner rather than later." Everyone nodded, and I told them to go train and that I would join them soon. Every spare minute for everyone here was training. We would continue to train all day until the war, and we actually moved in and fought.
