I was glad it was just Cade and me. I had told Robert he was not needed as my guard because I would have Cade with me. He had been hesitant, but after assurances from myself and Cade, he relented and decided he would take the day to rest. I was glad. Last week, he hardly left my side except when I slept. He would sleep then, too, but he needed to look more rested. I understood now why there were always two guards for the Luna. Robert had told me he had all the confidence in the world I could defend myself, but yet he still was always alert. He deserved a day off.
Cade opened the door of a black truck. I crawled up into it. He was fast coming around and getting in. The side of the building opened, and he pulled us out. Over our link, I asked, "So, will you tell me where we are going now?" "Someone is impatient." "Well, at least can you tell me how long until I know?" "It will take a few hours. Here is a hint: we are going into a city." "A City?" "Well, the humans that live close by don't have what I want to take you to. It makes no sense since most of this place has stuff that would be most useful away from a city."
"Come on, Cade, you have to tell me." "I didn't realize you hated surprises." "Well, I do." "Fine, we are going to a place called Sheels." "I don't know what that is." "Now that I won't tell you, but trust me, you will love it." I sat back in the seat. Cade started to fiddle with the car. I didn't know what he was doing. Suddenly, his lips moved, and his hand began to tap. He was listening to music.
He glanced over at me, and his smile fell. He flicked some of the nobs again, and then I felt him in my head. "Sorry, I put on some music; I forget sometimes you can't hear." I smiled. "Turn the music back on. I can't hear it, but you can, and it seemed you liked it." He looked back to the road. I didn't know what I was doing, but I reached for the nob he used and turned it.
He went to his own place, and so did I. I watched as the trees passed us, and then eventually, more buildings rose and fewer trees. We had been sitting in the truck for a while now, and I was ready to Stretch my legs. Cade linked with me. "Okay, so do you want an early lunch or a snack and a late lunch?" "A snack is fine." He nodded, and soon, we pulled into a parking lot. It was a massive building like most I had seen.
Cade ran around and opened my car door. We went inside, and I was blown away; food was everywhere. He grabbed my hand, pulling me to where all the fruits and vegetables were. He let go to grab a few things. Then, I followed him to another aisle, where he grabbed a few more things. And lastly, while we were checking out, he grabbed some water. Once we got to the truck, he dumped everything on the seat.
I mind-linked him. "There is so much food in there. No one could possibly eat all of that." "Kaya, don't worry about that right now. I know you don't like greens, but I got your fruit to try. It is sweet but natural sugar, so I think you will like it." He opened one of the small containers and pulled out a red little thing. He held it out to me, and I bit into it. My mouth exploded with taste. It was like he said it was sweet but not overly, and had a sour taste. My face must have reflected how I looked because he smiled big. "I knew you would like strawberries."
I didn't wait for him but continued to stuff my face with the fruit. "Wait, there is more to try." I tried blackberries, raspberries, oranges, and bananas. I liked all of them. Then he opened this jar of something and had me dip my finger into it. I licked off the brown, gooey stuff. It was delicious. "No one can say no to Peanut Butter." I mind-linked him. "Why don't we have this stuff back at the packhouse?" "We do." "Oh. Well, I will add that to my diet because it is fucking delicious." I said as I stuffed another blackberry into my mouth. "Yeah, I think I have figured it out. You like sweet things, just natural sweeteners. The peanut butter is an all-natural one with no added sugar." "Maybe I don't know, but this spread was delicious." "Good, you will love the next place too."
He started the truck back up, and we pulled out onto a massive road with so many other cars. The building we parked at was just as big as the last. As we walked in, I looked at a vast sculpture of an Elk that stood by the door. Cade tugged on my hand, pulling me inside. I felt him in my mind. "Now, what do you want to look at first: bows, knives, fishing gear, canoes?" I looked at him in shock. "They sell canoes here?" He just nodded.
"I don't know where to start?" He grabbed my hand and led me to a moving colossal staircase. I followed behind him, and the thing carried us to the second floor. He pulled me to look at several things. He told me all about kayaks and the differences from the canoes. Which looked nothing like the ones we use in the north. The whole store was terrific. My friends, hell, the whole of the north would completely flip out if they could raid one of these stores. This place was amazing. I loved it.
