Chapter 222 Why Do You Insist on Being a Bystander?
Alice, Jessica, and Snow all scrunched up their faces at the same time, feeling a wave of unease wash over them.
Girls could be pretty contradictory sometimes.
On one hand, they wanted the guys they liked to be popular with other girls because it meant they had good taste. A guy who no girl liked just seemed kinda lame and not worth their time.
But on the flip side, if the guy they liked was too popular, they started to freak out a bit.
Actually, making a girl feel a bit threatened wasn't always a bad thing. The trick was, while making her feel that way, you also needed to make her feel secure.
If you could strike a balance, making her feel both a huge sense of crisis and a huge sense of security, then you had her hooked.
Funny enough, because Emily confessed to Charles in front of everyone, Alice, Snow, and Jessica felt both threatened and secure at the same time!
They figured Charles wouldn't go for Emily. After all, Charles had done so much for them. How could he just accept another girl's confession like that?
But Emily was also super hot and confident. She'd do anything for the guy she liked and didn't care what others thought. Wasn't a girl like that kinda awesome too?
They knew Charles would get more popular after today's track and field event, but they hadn't really felt it until now. Seeing Emily confess to Charles in person made their sense of crisis spike.
"Who is this girl, and why is she confessing to Charles? She has no shame!" Lori shook Jessica's arm, fuming. She thought Jessica and Charles were already a thing.
Lori could keep her feelings for Charles in check because Jessica was her childhood friend, and she couldn't betray that. But who was this new girl? Lori couldn't stand other girls hitting on Charles!
"She's Emily, a sophomore now. She was in the freshman talent show and is great at dancing. She's in the school's dance club. She used to date Leo, but they broke up a few weeks ago because she fell for Charles. Everyone knows about it. I heard Leo even fought Charles over it, but Charles has always kept his distance from her!" Jessica explained.
"So who won the fight?" Lori asked, curious.
"Of course, Charles did. He took on several guys at once!"
"Charles can fight too?" Lori was a bit shocked.
"Totally!"
Hearing Jessica and Lori talk, Alice had a lightbulb moment. So that was why Leo kept badmouthing Charles. He said Charles stole his girlfriend, but it was really his ex-girlfriend chasing after Charles.
"I'm sorry, Emily, thanks for your feelings, but I can't reciprocate them!" Charles turned her down flat. No way he could say yes.
"Why? What's wrong with me? Why are you rejecting me?" Emily was persistent, her voice firm but tears welling up in her eyes.
"Because I already like someone else!" Charles said, then gave Emily a quick hug before walking away.
He handled it smoothly, and the hug made it seem less harsh. It was a classy exit.
When Charles hugged her, Emily trembled and couldn't hold back her tears anymore. She felt a mix of disappointment and determination.
But just ten seconds after Charles left, Emily shouted, "Charles, I won't give up. I'll win you over, no matter who you like, I'll surpass her!"
The crowd went wild with applause.
Emily, even after being rejected, had the guts to say that. It was heartbreaking, touching, and admirable. Her words were humble but had a stubborn edge! She was really brave!
Many girls spent their lives waiting for boys to chase them, never making the first move. Because the boys they really liked never chased them, they missed out!
But Emily dared to confess to the guy she liked. She didn't care about what others thought and had her big moment in her prime. Success or failure, at least she tried and wouldn't have any regrets!
'Charles really turned Emily down. Could the person he likes be me?' Alice, Snow, and Jessica all wondered at the same time.
