Chapter 233 Suddenly Turned into an Exam
Nancy was the first to hop out of the car, rocking her police uniform and looking absolutely stunning with a unique vibe. Her entrance grabbed everyone's attention almost immediately.
As everyone else started getting out of the car, the scene quickly became more chaotic. Even TV reporters were showing up, eager to cover the unfolding situation. and the top dog here was a big shot from the police department.
"Mr. Hawthorne, what brings you here in person?" Dashiell was totally taken aback!
"And you are?" Lysander Hawthorne asked with a casual frown. Clearly, he had no clue who Dashiell was.
"Mr. Hawthorne, I'm Dashiell from the Health Department!"
"Oh, Health Department, huh? Got a case to handle?"
"Yes, Mr. Hawthorne. There's this guy, Charles, who's been practicing medicine without a license. We've got solid evidence, and it's pretty clear-cut, but he's being super arrogant and not cooperating with us. We were just about to call the cops to arrest him!"
Mr. Hawthorne's face stayed blank, but the cops behind him were barely holding back their laughter.
"Charles? Are you sure you want to arrest Charles?" Lysander squinted, thinking Dashiell might be stirring up trouble.
Just this morning, the higher-ups had decided to make Charles a hero and promote him as the City Hero, and now Dashiell was saying he was practicing medicine illegally and needed to be arrested.
"Yes, Mr. Hawthorne, there are plenty of students and Dr. Kim who can back this up!"
"Dashiell, if you say Charles was practicing medicine illegally, why don't you give us the full story?" Nancy, who was standing behind Lysander, suddenly chimed in before he could respond.
Dashiell frowned but went ahead and explained the situation in detail.
"Dashiell, you're being a bit too harsh. Charles was just acting in an emergency. First off, he didn't charge any fees. Second, he didn't cause any harm. He saved a life, so shouldn't you be praising him instead of punishing him?"
"You need to get that the law against practicing medicine without a license is meant to stop crime, keep unqualified people from pretending to be doctors, making big bucks, and scamming patients. But Charles didn't do any of that, so this is clearly a case of bravery, not illegal practice. What do you think?" Lysander said gently.
Then his tone turned icy. "If you still think Charles broke the law, I can call your superior right now, or set up a special medical licensing exam for him. If he passes, doesn't that mean he's qualified to practice medicine?"
At this point, Dashiell suddenly realized that Charles might have some serious connections and that he might have just stepped on the wrong toes.
"Mr. Hawthorne, I think you're playing favorites with Charles. If he broke the law, he broke the law. He should be punished, no matter the reason. Otherwise, what's the point of having laws? Rules are rules!" Thaddeus suddenly stood up and said. Even with the police chief in front of him, he wasn't backing down.
"And you are?"
"I'm a doctor, Thaddeus Kim. My father is Percival Kim!"
"You're Mr. Kim's son?"
Percival was a big name in the state's medical community, a national-level expert, chief physician, and internal medicine specialist, even respected by high-ranking officials.
Lysander frowned. Normally, he might have given Thaddeus some respect because of his father, but right now, going after Charles meant going against him.
So Lysander ignored Thaddeus and walked up to Charles, giving him a once-over. "Charles, do you really have medical skills? If you took a medical licensing exam, do you think you could pass?"
"I don't think it would be a problem," Charles said calmly.
"Alright, since you're confident, I'll call the head of the Health Department right now and set up a special medical licensing exam. If Charles passes, I think Dr. Kim won't push this matter, right?" Lysander suddenly said.
He wasn't just talking off the cuff; he had a plan. If he wanted, he could just ignore Thaddeus and the others and take Charles away. But if Charles was practicing medicine without a license, it could come back to bite him.
The leadership had just decided to make Charles a hero and promote him as the City Hero. But if the City Hero was suspected of breaking the law, it would be a PR nightmare.
So, it was better to arrange a special medical licensing exam. If Charles passed, everyone would drop the issue, and the city's reputation would remain intact.
"Since Mr. Hawthorne said so, I have nothing more to say." Thaddeus offered, "And I know a few senior figures in the medical community. If they set the exam questions, it would ensure fairness, justice, and transparency. What do you think, Mr. Hawthorne?"
"I have no objections!" Lysander shrugged. If Thaddeus wanted to bring in senior figures, that was fine by him.
"Alright, I'll call them right away!" Thaddeus said and started making calls.
The situation was getting weird. What started as a case of illegal medical practice had now turned into an exam?
Charles felt a bit helpless. "Are you sure you want to bring people to test me?"
He wasn't boasting; he was genuinely concerned that these experts and professors might end up doubting their own skills!
