Chapter 50
Rachel
I was lying in bed thinking back to last night and the fact that we told each other we loved each other and then Massimo gave me the best jewellery gift I’ve ever received. Yes, I had issues with jewellery as gifts because they never were just a gift it was always ‘I’m sorry I hit you I’ll never do it again’ but last night’s gift was ‘I love you’. I never thought I’ll tell Massimo I love him and I definitely never thought he loved me. It was so soon, but I did love him. It this short time he showed me more love and respect I’ve ever received. I’m not going to overthink it; I’m just going to enjoy it. If life taught me one thing, tomorrow is never promise to anyone.
I decided I’m going to go for a run and then I want to stop at a butcher and fresh produce store, I’m going to make Massimo a proper South African dinner, with dessert as well. I phoned Marco and told him of my plans he told me he’ll wait for me at the lift. I got up and saw there was a letter from Massimo on my nightstand. “Morning sweetheart, sorry had to leave early I have an important meeting and busy day. I hope you enjoy your day; PS I’ll be home at 7pm. Love M” I was like a teenage girl I hugged the letter and swoon. Love M. I can literally see hearts all around me. I kissed the letter and put it on the nightstand. I got dressed and brushed my teeth then I got Marco at the lift.
“Morning Marco” “Morning Rachel, where are we running to?” “I think Central Park again.” We got in the lift and went to the lobby. “Rachel we can put an order in at the butcher and fresh produce store and they will deliver.” “I will like to do it myself if it’s not too far out of our way.” “No off course.” “When we get back, we’ll pass the 2 stores.” “Thank you Marco.” When we got outside Marco immediately crossed the street, I’m sure he was not in a mood for a panic attack today, but I was glad he took the lead. We ran through the streets of New York until we reach Central Park. We stopped and Marco asked me if I wanted to take the lead. “No thank you Marco you take the lead, the route you took us the previous time was so beautiful.” “You want to take the same route or another?” “Let’s go with another” I told him. Marco set a nice pace where I could run and look at my surroundings. I couldn’t believe I was in love and living in New York City if anyone would have told me this a year ago, I would have laughed in their face. Falling in love was definitely not in the cards then, actually no man was. But here I was in New York City and in love with a great man. I was so deep in thought I didn’t even realise we were returning to the entrance of Central Park; I wasn’t even tired yet. Must be something in the air. We stopped and Marco gave me a bottle of water. “You good to go Rachel?” “Yes, thank you Marco” “You’re a good runner” he told me “Next time I will speed up the pace a little. It looks like you getting bored.” He smiled at me. “Lots of practice running away from stuff Marco, but yes, we can pick up the pace a little next time.” “What about now you ready to have a faster run to the fresh produce store it’s only 1 km away.” “Oooo Marco you talking my language I would say I’ll race you but I don’t now where I’m going.” Marco just laughed at me and started to run. Okay I have my work cut out for me. Thank goodness the fresh produce store was only 1 km away because Marco didn’t joke, we ran there like someone was chasing us. We stopped in front of the store. “Okay Marco you made your point I’ll definitely won’t be able to keep up with that pace.” He laughed “I won’t let us run to that pace the whole time Rachel. You know what you want, you want me to come in with you?” “No, I’m good.” I went into the store looking for green beans, potatoes, onions, pumpkin, rice, apricot jam and cream, I paid and then we were off to the butcher. Thank God we walked; Marco killed me on that 1 km run. When we got inside the butcher I asked for a leg of lamb, I was surprised how expensive meat was. But this was a special dinner for Massimo and next week I start to work, well hopefully it all depends on how tomorrow goes at the doctor.
We got back to the apartment; I thanked Marco and we went our separate way. I went to shower and pack away all my clothes we bought yesterday. I didn’t want the house keeper to pack anything away because I had my own system with what goes where. Yes, I have issues. I also put the leg of lamb in the oven. When I was done organising everything, I saw the time and realised I had to start with my vegetables and dessert. I started with my green beans, my mom always made it with onion and potato’s and I loved it so that was what I did with the green beans. I decided to make sweet pumpkin and roasted potatoes. So, the full menu tonight is Roast leg of lamb, green beans with onion and potato’s, sweet pumpkin, rice and roasted potatoes and dessert will be Malva pudding and cream. I set the table with some candles. I want it to be romantic. When I was done, I went to get dress. Just as I was about to finish I heard Marco calling my name. “Rachel, you have a guest” I came out of the room totally confuse who could the guest be. When I walked into the foyer Herman was standing there holding a letter in his hands.
“Hi Herman, this is quite a surprise, how are you?” “Hi Rachel, I’m good thank you. I just wanted to bring this letter to you I don’t know if it’s important or not, it came yesterday.” “Thank you, Herman, but you could just have called me I would have come to fetch it.” “I knew I would be in the neighbourhood today, so no worries. Are you doing good Rachel, is he looking after you?” “I’m very good thank you Herman and yes, his looking after me. I promise if anything is wrong, I’ll come back.” “Remember there is always a place for you with us.” “You to kind thank you Herman.” “Then let me go it looks like you have plans tonight.” “Just making Massimo a South African meal.” “I would die for one of those” Herman said. “Then I’ll invite you and Sally to come over and I’ll make us a meal.” “I’m not going to say no to that, thank you Rachel.” “I’ll be in touch and thank you for bringing the letter.” “My pleasure.” Then Marco escorted Herman out again.
I looked at the letter and saw it came from South Africa, who would write me a letter, my brother calls me or message me but a letter, that’s different.
I opened the letter and fell to my knees.
‘You think you could run from me; you think a continent is far enough; I’ll always find you.
If I can’t have you no one can’
