My mum wants me to go with her

Sadie’s pov

I had no idea what Justin was thinking. The atmosphere was still chaotic, and the guests at Daisy ’s event were trying to process what Daisy  and I had said. Then, out of nowhere, Justin asked for my hand in marriage. It felt so wrong, especially considering I was still confused about what Daisy  had done to me and what would be going on in her mind knowing for the first time that her dad wasn’t her dad. I knew something like this might happen, but not in such an embarrassing moment. It happened in front of my mum, her boyfriend, my ex, and people who held me in high regard or never thought of me doing something like this. In their eyes, it looked like I was the baddest.
I didn’t blame Daisy  so much. I knew how I would have reacted if I were in her shoes, but still, she should have confronted me privately. Why did she gather such a huge crowd just to shame me? In fact, I was the main orchestrator of my own humiliation.
It had been about an hour since I left the event. As soon as Justin took the microphone and looked at me, asking if I would marry him, I stood up and left without talking to anyone. On my way home, I didn’t know who to call about Daisy ’s health. She was still my dear friend, someone I care so much about, but I knew she wouldn’t want me near her at this moment and I totally understand.
I was lying on my bed in my room with my legs crossed and my hands resting behind my head on the pillow, staring at the ceiling. I had been home for over thirty minutes, and Justin hadn’t returned. Sudden fear gripped me, and I uncrossed my legs and placed them on the floor.
“What Justin did to me shouldn’t stop me from calling him and asking where he is at the moment,” I said to myself slowly. I turned and looked around for my bag, and that’s when I remembered that I was still wearing the gown I had worn to the ceremony.
I took my phone from my bag, and when I touched the screen, I saw numerous missed calls.
“When did they call me?”
Then I noticed the silent mode icon on the screen of my phone, and I recalled that I had put it on silent when I was at Daisy ’s party. As I checked the missed calls, I saw my mum’s number, Leo’s number, and Justin’s number. Why was Leo still calling me? Did he think I had changed my mind?
Seeing Leo’s call held no significance to me, so I quickly dismissed it. Why was my mother calling? What did she want to tell me? Her words will definitely be about what happened at the event.
Just as I was about to shift my focus away from why my mum had called and then check the two messages Justin had sent me, my phone started ringing, and it was my mum calling. I took a deep breath and prepared myself for whatever she was about to say.
“Hello, Mum,” I said, lowering my voice slightly.
“Sadie, where are you?” my mum asked. It was such a simple question, but I couldn’t reply to her as quickly as she wanted. What should I say? I didn’t want to mention anything about Justin to my mum. I couldn’t predict how she would react or if she would condemn me for what just happened or if she would want to hear the truth from me…
“Sadie, are you there?” she asked as the conversation fell silent.
“Yes! I’m here,” I finally responded.
“Then where are you?”
“I’m at Justin’s house…” I finally said with a voice slightly close to guilt.
“Hmmm….I will be going back home tomorrow, and I want you to join me. I’m staying at the hotel you visited yesterday, and I want us to go home together.”
“Home?”
“Yes, you heard me right. I’m going with you, and I’m relieved this didn’t happen in our city. How would I have been able to handle it? It would have been so embarrassing. We still haven’t overcome the stigma of not being able to find your dad…”
“That reminds me mum, you mentioned that my dad is in this city. Are you leaving without finding him for me?” I asked and I was trying to cover her former statements.
“I was just joking. How could I locate someone I don’t even know? That’s not why I called you. Pack your things and come to meet me at the hotel, period!" she paused, probably waiting for me to respond. When I didn’t say anything and was expecting her to hang up the call, she added,
“I’ll be waiting for you. You better start coming right now. I don’t think it would go well if Daisy  comes and meets you in that house .” Then she ended the call.
I couldn’t believe my mum was actually joking about my dad being here. There was a part of me that was excited about meeting the person who fathered me, even though he did it in a cruel way. There was still an unfulfilled part of me that wanted to embrace him and, at the same time, hate him for everything he had done, especially abandoning me.
I placed my phone on my bed and bent my face to the floor. At this point, I forgot about everything happening around me, to the extent that I didn’t hear the front door opening. I only became aware that Justin was in the house when he stood a few yards away from me. I couldn’t tell how long he had been standing there, looking at me, but all I knew was that I closed my eyes and subconsciously blocked out the sound.
“Sadie, are you still upset? I have been calling you.” Justin’s voice startled me.
“When did you get here?” I almost stumbled, looking at him for an answer.
“I’ve been standing here for a while. Are you still angry with me? I called you, I texted you, but you didn’t respond. Is it a crime to fall in love with you?” He paused, gazing at me. “And now everyone who shouldn’t know about our relationship is aware. Why the shame again?” He opened her hands.
“You shouldn’t have proposed to me at that moment…” I began, but my phone started ringing again, interrupting me. I glanced at the screen and simply silenced the call.
“Who is that?” he asked.
“My mum.”
“Then pick up her call,” Justin shrugged.
“She wants me to join her in her hotel room tomorrow morning so we can go back together.”
“Are you going back with her?” he asked, his eyes widening in surprise.
“Wait, how is Daisy  doing?”
“She is better now. She was even better at the event, but the nurses wanted her to rest at the hospital,” he explained and I took a deep breath of relief.
“I’m happy to hear that,” I said, noticing that Justin’s face looked very uncomfortable.
“What’s the matter with you?” I asked, curious about his sudden change in demeanor. Before I could hear his response, he quickly spoke up as if he remembered something.
“How did you see the DNA results of Daisy …” he began, and I thought he might be angry with me.
“I’m sorry, I saw it where you kept it. I know you’ll be mad at me,” I said with a bedroom voice and at the same time, anticipating his reaction.
Just then, my phone rang again, and it was my mother calling once more. I glanced at the screen and then looked back at Justin.
“Who is calling?” He asked.
“My mum, she wants me to go with her?”
“Are you accompanying me back to your city?” he rushed his words, and my phone was still ringing as he moved closer to me, holding my other hand affectionately. Then He spoke with a loving tone and eyes filled with emotions and he said,
“Dear Sadie, I am certain that I would recognize you in another lifetime. Loving you has opened up a world I never knew existed. Letting you go back feels like losing you, and I would find myself in great darkness. Without our hands together, I doubt I could find my way out of it. Before I met you, my life felt like a distant memory. Nothing else matters as long as I am with you. Loving you was never a mistake or just about sexual satisfaction. I would fight anyone who tries to come between us. You are an angel who has shed the feathers off her wings. I love you more than any fight that awaits us to be together. I love you, Sadie, more than the obstacles that will come our way. Are you still going back, or shall we build something beautiful from what we’ve kept hidden in secret?”
