My dad is not on my side
Daisy's pov
How long will this female doctor allow me to talk to my mum? Whenever I try to discuss things with her, she always says,
"Please, don't speak. You need to relax and calm your nerves. You need it for your present situation.”
Does this doctor really understand how I'm feeling right now? There are so many questions racing through my mind, and I need answers. Is Justin not my biological father? It felt like a dream when Sadie revealed it to the hearing of everyone. How did she come to know such information? And why would my dad or Justin, whatever I should call him now, share such sensitive details and let Sadie use it to mock me in front of everyone? If she truly cared about me, she would have told me as soon as she found out. This shows how deeply involved Sadie and my dad are, if what she said is true. But hold on, will my mum's words be enough to satisfy me? She has always insisted that Justin is my biological father. All I need is clarity, and only my mum and dad can provide that by explaining everything that has happened.
Since the doctor wasn't giving me an opportunity to talk to my mom, I decided to close my eyes and pretend to be asleep. This way, my mum wouldn't be allowed in unless accompanied by a female nurse. Restlessness soon overcame me, and I couldn't keep my eyes closed for long. When the doctor went to her office, I spoke to the nurse and said,
"Could you please tell my mum to come in with my phone? Also, check my blood pressure. I think I'm fine."
"You're not yet okay. Last time we checked, it was very high, and we wanted it to come down..." the nurse began, but I interrupted her and said,
"Not being able to talk to my mum is the reason it's not coming down." I sat down, and she looked at me for a moment before responding,
"Please try to get some rest for at least an hour. It will help calm you down. Your mum isn't going anywhere. Your anxiety is causing your blood pressure to spike. Try to think less about whatever is troubling your mind and get some sleep."
I nodded when the nurse said those words and I lay down again, making an effort to sleep. Eventually, I drifted off. Although I was asked to sleep for at least an hour, I realized I had slept for over two hours. My body truly needed the rest, and when I woke up around 9 PM, I felt a difference within me. They checked my blood pressure and saw that it had returned to normal.
Throughout the night, my mum wasn't by my side. The next morning, she came, and we embraced. I didn't attempt to ask her the pressing questions in my mind because I didn't want my blood pressure to rise. They conducted some tests, and I was given the green light to go home.
My mum drove the car, and I quietly settled in the backseat, resting my head against the headrest. I patiently waited until we reached my mum's house, and during the journey, she occasionally glanced at me through the rearview mirror and asked,
"Are you feeling alright?”
All I could do was furrow my brow and occasionally nod my head. I didn't want to open my mouth because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to control my words once I started talking. I felt like a pressure cooker ready to explode.
On our way home, my mum's phone rang three times, but she didn't answer it. I wasn't interested in who was calling, but my instinct told me it might be her boyfriend.
When my mum stopped the car in front of her house and was about to get out, I couldn't hold myself anymore and I asked her,
"Mum, is Justin actually my dad?"
My mum took a deep breath and nervously interlocked her thumbs while her hands were on the steering wheel. She didn't look at my face; her eyes were fixed on the windscreen.
"Daisy, believe me or not, but I want you to believe me..." Her tone suggested that she thought I didn't believe her based on how I asked the question.
"I'm not doubting you, I'm just asking. Don't I have the right to know who my biological father is?"
"Of course, you have the right, my daughter. But your body language clearly shows that you doubt me."
"No, no, Mum. I know what I'm fighting for. If you're right, then it means Sadie's accusation was a made-up story, and she must face the consequences."
"Believe me, since I said 'yes, I do' to Justin, no man has seen me naked. I repeat, no man has seen me naked."
"If that's the case, my dad needs to answer me. He didn't come forward to defend me in public because of his secret affair with Sadie. First, my dad needs to answer me before I turn my anger towards Sadie. I hope she didn't leave with her mum. She can't disgrace me like that and get away with it."
As I was speaking, we saw Gabriel driving his car towards us. He stopped very close to us and was the first to get out of the car. I stopped talking, and we waited to see what he wanted to do.
"Daisy, how are you feeling right now?" This was the first thing he said, and his hand movements showed sincerity.
"I'm fine, very fine now." Then he turned to my mum, opened her door, and got out.
"Darling, I've been trying to call you..."
"As you can see, my daughter needs my full attention. For that reason, I want you to give me some space for now. You better go and take care of your other women."
"No, Juliana, you need to understand. I love you with all my heart, and I want to be with you..." He tried to hold my mum's hands while standing in front of her. I didn't want to witness the outcome of their argument, so I got out of the car and went inside. I had a mission, and my mission wouldn't be interrupted by my mum's relationship with her fiancé. I didn't really care what happened between them. What mattered to me was getting in touch with my dad and asking him why he stayed silent when his secret girlfriend, Sadie humiliated me in front of everyone. She indirectly called me a bastard, and my dad was there, unable to defend me.
I went into my room, completely disregarding the doctor's instructions on how to move or putting myself into pressure. It would be better to confront the problem head-on while it was still fresh. Sadie's accusation needed to be turned back on her, and my dad's response was the only thing standing between me and the truth. I grabbed my phone and dialed my dad's number, already deciding that if he didn't answer, I would go to his house immediately. Fortunately, he picked up the call when it started ringing.
"Hello, Dad..."
"Are you still at the hospital? I'm on my way there," he quickly interrupted me.
"No, I'm at home."
"Home?" His voice grew louder, probably thinking I was at his house.
"I'm at my mum's house."
"Okay! So, how are you feeling?"
"I'm much better."
"Good to hear that," he said, and I continued.
"Dad, I want the truth from you. Actually, there's no need to discuss that. Why were you silent when Sadie humiliated me in front of everyone I invited? Why did you let that happen, Dad?" I expected an immediate response, but he remained silent.
"What are you trying to imply? Do you love Sadie more than me? Were you satisfied with humiliating me?" I added when he wasn't responding.
"No, Daisy, she didn't humiliate you. I don't think I can say that..."
"I knew this would happen. Are you really my dad? Let's get straight to the point." There was silence again, and the longer he kept quiet, the more I felt like he was taking Sadie's side.
"So, you're taking Sadie's side?" I asked angrily. What happened next shocked me—my dad simply ended the call.
"What?" I shouted. He had made up his mind to the point that he hung up on me. Frustrated, I stamped my feet on the floor, and then a message came through on my phone. I checked the message and saw that it was from my dad. I quickly tapped on it, and it opened a PDF file with "DNA results" written at the top.
"Mum! Mum!! Look at what my dad just sent me," I rushed out of my room to show my mum, who was still engaged in a conversation with Gabriel.
“Mum look!” I interrupted them.
