Tell us the good news!
Sadie’s pov
As I entered the living room, I saw Daisy absorbed in her phone, frustration all across her face. I hesitated for a moment, debating whether to sit next to her, but before I could, she stood up and walked toward the stairs without saying a word. It seemed she was heading to her room. I stood there for a few moments, then decided to follow her again after about three minutes. This time, I didn’t bother knocking—I opened the door and found her lying on the bed.
“Can we talk?” I asked softly. She remained silent, her back turned to me.
“There’s something I need to tell you as a friend,” I began, still standing awkwardly by the door. “I should have told you earlier, but now seems like the right time…”
Before I could finish, Daisy sat up on the edge of the bed, cutting me off with a question that caught me off guard. “Do you really think Leo will bring you the happiness you’re looking for?”
“This has nothing to do with Leo,” I replied quickly. “It’s about me. I’ve been keeping a secret, and I’m sorry for not telling you sooner…”
Her interest piqued the moment I mentioned the word "secret." She didn’t even wait for me to continue. “What’s the secret?” she asked, her tone now curious.
“Can I sit down?” I asked, motioning toward the bed.
She nodded, patting the spot next to her. “Sure, sit.”
I sat down carefully, feeling the weight of the moment. “Daisy, before you invited me here, I met someone online.” I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. “Please, don’t share this with anyone.”
I paused again, debating whether to mention his age. The fear of being judged made me falter, but Daisy’s expectant expression pushed me to continue.
“Sadie, I’m still waiting,” she prompted.
“I’ve fallen in love with this guy I met online,” I finally confessed. “And that’s why I haven’t been interested in any of the guys you’ve introduced me to. Now he wants to meet me this Saturday.”
“Can’t you ask him to change the date? You’re going to miss the celebration,” she said, her voice softening.
“It’s complicated,” I sighed. “If I don’t see him this Saturday, I might never get the chance again. I love him, Daisy. Please understand.”
She stood up, processing what I had just revealed. “You should have told me earlier. I wouldn’t have gone through all the trouble trying to set you up with someone else.”
“I know, I’m sorry.”
“What will I tell my dad?” she asked, her voice filled with concern. “Don’t you think he’ll be upset if you leave before the event?”
“That’s why I need your help. Could you tell him I have an important interview?”
“A ‘sexual’ interview?” she teased, and we both burst into laughter, easing some of the tension.
“You’re the only one who knows the real reason I’m leaving,” I said, grateful for her humor.
Daisy looked at me thoughtfully. “When will I see you again?”
“For your sake, I’ll come back soon, but after that, I’m not sure.”
She sat beside me again, taking my hand. “Why do you think you’re in love with someone you’ve only met online?”
“I can’t explain it, but I just am,” I replied, feeling the weight of my emotions.
“If that’s the case, let’s figure out how to break the news to my dad,” Daisy said. “But be prepared—he’s going to be upset. Since you got here, he’s been so warm toward you. He won’t be happy if you’re not at the house opening.”
“I know,” I said quietly, struggling to find the right words. “I don’t want to disappoint him.”
“He’ll be devastated,” Daisy sighed, just as the sound of Justin’s car pulling up outside interrupted us.
“Dad’s back. We should tell him now,” Daisy said, looking nervous.
“Just give me a few minutes,” I pleaded, feeling a sudden rush of guilt. The truth was, I didn’t just feel bad about leaving—I was also wrestling with the secret I carried about Justin. The thought of what we had planned weighed heavily on me. How could I face him, knowing what we had arranged?
As I sat there, trying to compose myself, a knock came at the door.
“Hello, ladies. Can I come in?” Justin’s voice called from the door post, sending my heart racing. I wasn’t ready to face him. How could I, knowing that I’d secretly agreed to spend the night with him after the celebration?
“Come in,” Daisy called out, while my eyes remained fixed on the floor.
Justin entered, his presence filling the room. “I’ve got some disappointing news, and some good news for you both,” he said with a smile.
“Tell us the good news first,” Daisy urged, her tone light, but my heart was pounding.
I couldn’t look at him. The guilt was too overwhelming. After all, he was my best friend’s dad—what I had planned with him felt impossible to justify, even to myself.
