Your Dad

Daisy and her mum were having breakfast at the dining table when Daisy's phone received a message notification. Reluctantly, she turned to look at her phone just as she was about to take a spoonful of food. She suddenly paused and said immediately,

"Mom, I got a message from the DNA lab. The result is out."

"Hmm..." Juliana stopped and held her spoon near her mouth, placing it gently back to her plate of food. Both mother and daughter were frozen by the message from the lab.

"Mum, I can't go to the lab alone. I want you to come with me to get the results. I'm apprehensive."

Juliana and Daisy, who had been smiling moments ago, became calm. Juliana, in particular, couldn't control her breathing and became nervous.

"Please excuse me, I need to use the restroom," she said to her daughter as she stood up and left. Once inside the restroom, she moved around with her hands behind her back, feeling overwhelmed by her thoughts.

"What will happen...?" She paused, unsure of what to expect from the DNA results. "What if it's positive? What will Justin think of me? Will he accuse me of cheating when we were together? Or what will he believe?”

Suddenly, she summoned courage and said to herself, "I'm doing this for Daisy's sake, forget what others might say." She was surprised by her newfound bravery. Juliana washed her face with water and returned from the restroom. Upon coming out, Daisy was already in her room preparing to go to the lab.

"Mom, I'm almost ready," Daisy said, and they both left the house ten minutes later. Juliana drove the car, and about thirty minutes later, they arrived in front of a white building, which was the lab where Daisy had taken the test.

"Are you nervous?" Juliana asked her daughter, noticing her fidgeting in the car.

"Somewhat, mom. This feels like a revelation, and I'm anxious, I won't lie."

Juliana tapped Daisy on her right shoulder and said, "I'm sorry for putting you through all of this. Sometimes I feel ashamed."

"Don't be," Daisy quickly replied. "Nobody is perfect." They embraced each other inside the car before getting out. Daisy walked slightly ahead as they approached the lab, and despite her initial confidence, the closer they got to the entrance, the more she could feel her own heartbeat.

Upon entering the lab, they were directed to the place where they would receive the results. As they approached the office, Daisy suddenly stopped walking, and Juliana quickly held her hand and whispered in her ear,

"Please, let's not cause a scene here. Let's collect the results and leave."

Daisy nodded, and they entered the office, where a man in a white coat and a black tie was sitting on the opposite chair.

"Good morning, I'm Mrs. Juliana, and we're here to collect the DNA test results," she said, handing over the test receipt to the man.

"Welcome. Please have a seat," he replied, and they both sat down. The man stood up, took a sheet of paper, and went inside. Daisy let out a great sigh, while Juliana placed her hand on her lap, trying to calm her down. After a few minutes, the man returned with a sealed envelope and handed it to Daisy.

"This is the result of your test," he said.

"Okay, thank you," Juliana stood up and interrupted the man, perhaps not wanting him to reveal the contents of the envelope. Daisy stood up with her mum, and they left the office. Once they got into their car, Daisy spoke up.

"Mum, I want to see the result. I don't think I can breathe properly without knowing what's in the envelope," she said, resting her head against the dashboard.

Juliana took out the envelope from her bag, her heart pounding. This wasn't just about her daughter; it also concerned her. She carefully broke the seal, and even though Daisy didn't lift her head, she listened intently to what her mum would read or say. Daisy heard the sound of the paper being unfolded, and in her mind, it felt like a matter of seconds before she would know if she had found her dad or if her mum had something to reveal.

"Johnson is your father!" Juliana blurted out, and at the same time, Daisy raised her head and took the result from her mum. The car fell silent at that moment, and Juliana, after handing her daughter the DNA result, rested her head on the steering wheel.

"Does this mean that Johnson and I will reconnect? Will Daisy be angry with me?" Juliana wondered until her daughter interrupted her thoughts by tapping her on the shoulder.

"Mum, I feel relieved. Not knowing who my biological father was has been torturous. Hmm... this is what Sadie has been suffering from for years. I feel satisfied knowing that he's the man who fathered me."

"I thought you would be angry with me," Juliana raised her head.

"No, it's not your fault. You never cheated on Justin, and that's something you should be proud of. I know Justin thought you cheated on him."

"Thank you, Daisy. You've given me a new lease on life," Juliana embraced Daisy, and it felt like the revelation had brought them even closer.

"Can you take me to meet my dad? I don't love him yet, but I want to give him a hug. If it weren't for Justin and Sadie breaking my heart, we could have turned this into a celebration," Daisy said, and as her mum was about to start the car, Daisy added,

"Why don't we tell Justin this news?"

"Is it necessary?" Juliana asked.

"It's very necessary, Mum. How will he know you never cheated after taking our marriage vows?"

"Hmm..." Juliana hummed and started the car's engine, driving away.

***********

Later that same day, in the evening, Juliana called Johnson on the phone.

"Are you at home?" she asked.

"Yes!" he answered with great joy. "Are you coming?"

"Yes, and there's something very important I'd like to tell you."

"Important? Wow... I'm surprised you called me. The other day, you asked me to leave your house. I would have thought, 'Oh my God, the other man has taken her away.'"

"Stop! I'm talking about something very important," she said.

"What could be more important than having you visit my house when all hope seems lost? I'm at home, waiting for you..."

"Okay," she said, ending the call. Juliana was sitting in the living room and called Daisy, who was taking a while to come out of her room.

"Daisy? Are you not done getting dressed?" she raised her voice.

"I am..." she came out, and she looked really beautiful. They both looked at each other for a moment, and Daisy asked,

"How do I look?"

"You look so cute. We're not going on a date. We're going..." Juliana started to say.

"To meet dad," Daisy quickly interrupted, and they both laughed.

"Please, let's go. We're not staying there overnight. We'll come back home." Juliana stood up, grabbed the car keys, and they both left.

"Mum, I want to drive..." Daisy said.

"Hmmm... okay," Juliana shrugged and handed her daughter the key.

"Mum, you don't know how much relief finding out about my biological father has brought me. I'm the happiest person in the world. It'll be nice to meet him."

Daisy went to the driver's side, and they got in the car and drove away. After about twenty-two minutes, they arrived in front of Johnson's house. Johnson was adjusting his bowtie in front of the mirror when he heard the sound of Juliana's car. He smirked to himself, then went to the door. Before reaching it, he heard a knock.

"I hope I smell nice," he thought and smiled, opening the door at the same time.

"Welcome! My..." he paused as he saw Daisy. "I thought you were coming alone," he said, still holding the door.

"Yes, but my daughter insisted on following me," Juliana replied.

"You never told me your daughter was coming with you."

"Don't you want me in your house?" Daisy stepped forward and asked.

"Why not! What I meant was that your mum didn't inform me that you were coming with her. Why would I reject a beautiful young lady like you? Please come inside." Johnson opened the door wider, and they entered. Despite speaking kind words to Juliana and Daisy, his inner joy had diminished, and he tried to conceal it.

"What should I bring? I mean, your daughter's favorite wine. I know your preference," he smiled.

"Bring my choice of wine; she'll like it too," Juliana said after they had all sat down.

"She shouldn't have followed her mum," Johnson thought as he retrieved the bottle of wine from the bar. He brought out three glasses and poured the wine into them. After they each took a glass of wine, Daisy kept looking at her mum.

"When will my mum tell him why we're here?" Daisy wondered, sipping from her wine.

A few minutes later, Juliana cleared her throat, and Daisy thought, "I guess this is the moment I've been waiting for."

"Johnson, coming to your house today wasn't a coincidence. There's a reason behind it," Juliana started.

"I hope it's a good reason. I'm still very interested in you," he interrupted her.

"Please, let me speak," Juliana requested.

"Oh, sorry, go ahead," Johnson said, looking at both Juliana and Daisy's faces.

"We both knew each other very well and what happened to us until the day you disappeared..." Juliana paused, and Johnson smiled, remembering that unforgettable night. Then she continued,

"That day was a memorable night, not just because of what happened, but because of the outcome. Right in front of me is your dad." Juliana paused for a few seconds and she pointed at Daisy, "She is your daughter!" She looked at Johnson to gauge his reaction.
