What came next would prove just how wrong I was
Charlotte’s POV
I should have stayed home. As soon as we walked into the club, the music crashed over me like a tide. It was loud, fast, and full of energy, making the floor beneath my heels feel like it was alive. Lights flashed across the ceiling in every colour you could imagine. My heart was already racing, part nerves, part excitement, and a little regret. Kate was all smiles. “See? I told you Loveth would get us in.”
“You forgot to mention I had to flirt with the bouncer and give him a fake number,” I replied, brushing my hair behind my ear.
Loveth, walking just behind us, laughed. “Come on, Charlotte. That guy was ready to leave his job and follow you into the street.”
I gave him a hard look. “Stop exaggerating.”
Kate joined in, giggling. “Honestly, I thought he might faint. You had him completely gone.”
I sighed, turning back to face them. “Can you two stop already? I only did it so we could get inside. That is all.”
Right then, two older guys pushed past us, bumping into Kate and Loveth without a word.
“Watch it,” Kate muttered under her breath. One of the men looked at us briefly and said, “Kids,” before walking off.
“Did he just call us kids?” I asked, wide-eyed. “With all this makeup and effort?”
“Relax,” Kate said. “No one will notice once we are inside.”
Loveth led us past a rope and into the main part of the club. Music blasted from huge speakers, and lights danced over the crowd. It was packed, sweaty, and perfect. I spotted the DJ high up at the back of the room, moving his hands over the deck like he was in charge of the whole world.
“This place is amazing!” Kate shouted, pulling me toward an empty table close to the dance floor.
I was glad I wore thick heels, even though they made walking slow. My legs were already sore, but it was worth it.
“I told you this place was good,” Loveth said proudly, then left to grab our usual drinks.
Kate’s eyes followed him as he walked away.
“You are staring,” I said, raising one eyebrow.
She quickly looked away. “No, I am not.”
I smirked but let it go. If she liked Loveth, that was her secret to keep, at least for now.
“So,” she asked, changing the subject, “who do you think will get drunk first tonight?”
“Definitely me,” I replied. “That is the whole reason I came.”
“You are serious about that?” she laughed.
“Dead serious.”
Loveth came back holding three glasses, balancing two in one hand. “Here you go. Let the fun begin.”
I grabbed mine and drank it almost in one go.
“Whoa,” Kate said.
“Already?” Loveth looked surprised.
I waved my hand and called for another. “I am not here to sip slowly. I am here to forget.”
Four drinks later, I could feel the buzz. My head felt light, my body relaxed, and I stopped caring who was watching. I leaned back in my chair and let my eyes drift up to the DJ.
He was tall, dark-haired, and completely focused on the music. I could not stop staring. My mind went places it should not. I wondered what it would be like to get his attention. I liked a challenge, and he looked like one.
“Hey Kate,” I said slowly, pointing up toward the DJ. “What do you think of him for me?”
She followed my finger. “He is cute, but he is busy, Charlotte.”
“I know. That makes it more fun,” I said and started laughing.
If this night was about letting go, then I planned to do it properly. And maybe, just maybe, the DJ could help me forget Luther.
“Just watch me,” I grinned, pushing back my chair.
The beat that filled the club was the same song Luther once played in his car the night he drove me home. That night used to feel special. But not tonight. Tonight, I was here to forget. I swayed a little as I made my way to the dance floor. The music was loud, the lights were wild, and I was ready to lose myself in the moment. I stepped right into the centre, where everyone could see me, but I only wanted one pair of eyes to notice.
I started to move, slow and smooth, rolling my hips to the rhythm. My gaze was locked on the DJ. I danced like I wanted him to look. I wanted him to see me. Not as a girl. As a woman. I curved my finger, calling him over, not knowing if he even noticed. But just then, he played Too Hot by Jason, like he had read my mind. My body followed the beat without effort. I turned to Kate for a quick look, she gave me a thumbs up and a grin.
For a second, I felt bold. I felt like I could have any man in that room. Maybe I could even forget Luther. But then, I felt someone’s hands wrap around my waist. His voice brushed my ear, low and deep.
“I could get fired for coming down here to dance with you.” His warm breath hit my skin, and I shivered.
“But I had to. You’re the most stunning woman in this place.”
I rolled my hips against him, teasing, feeling his body react.
“I knew I wanted to dance with you the moment I stepped in,” I yelled back, letting his hands guide my moves.
“Confident, huh?” he teased, making me giggle.
I wished it was Luther instead. No matter how hard I tried, his face wouldn’t leave my head. The music, the alcohol, it wasn’t enough to drown him out.
“I am,” I said, tilting my head back as I bent low.
“Why are you here tonight?” the DJ asked suddenly.
The question caught me off guard.
“To have fun,” I said quickly, shutting my eyes and moving to the beat.
“You look like someone trying to forget.”
That made me stiffen for a second, but I laughed it off.
“I can tell,” he added. “But don’t worry, I’ll help you forget. Just wait for my shift to end.”
His words didn’t make me feel better. They made everything feel fake. I tried to keep smiling, to keep dancing, but my mind slipped again.
Then it happened. I felt it, like heat against my skin. I turned slowly, and across the room, near the counter, I saw him. Luther. He was watching me. His eyes locked on mine through the crowd. Two women stood close to him, one touching his arm like she belonged there.
Something in me snapped. I smirked at him from across the floor, then turned around and dropped lower, grinding hard against the DJ. I heard him curse behind me, but I did not stop. I did not care. My dress was rising up, but so was my rage. Luther stood up. His hands clenched into fists as he started moving toward me. My heart thudded in my chest, but I kept going. If he wanted to act like he didn’t care, then I would show him I didn’t care either. At least, that was what I told myself. But what came next would prove just how wrong I was.
