My heart feels heavy

Author's pov

It took Paul about twenty minutes to reach his best friend's office. After parking his car on the left side of the white building, he got out and headed straight for the elevator. Sam's office was on the seventh floor, and within a few minutes, Paul was standing in front of the door, knocking.

"Please come in," he heard Sam's voice along with another feminine voice. Paul grasped the doorknob and opened the door. Sam was seated, with his secretary showing him some files while standing near the black desk. As Paul entered, Sam said to the secretary, saying,

"Work on this file and bring it to me later."

"Okay, Sir," she took the files and left. Sam stood up and warmly shook hands with Paul, a smile on his face. He hoped for Paul to smile back, but instead, Paul seemed moody.

"Please, have a seat," Sam said. Before his secretary could leave the office, he quickly added,

"Anna, please bring us a bottle of wine."

"Okay, Sir," she replied before closing the door behind her. Sam leaned back against his rotating black chair and looked at Paul, waiting for him to speak.

"Why are you so worried?" Sam asked, attempting to understand what was troubling Paul.

"My heart feels heavy."

"Why?" Sam swayed his chair slightly from left to right.

"Do you remember Sadie?"

"Yes, your college friend?"

"Exactly!" Paul began, but as the door opened, he paused. Anna returned with a bottle of dark wine and two glasses, placing them carefully on the desk. Seeing that Anna's presence hindered Paul from continuing, Sam told his secretary,

"Don't bother opening the wine; I'll do it myself." Anna stepped back and left the office.

"Paul, please continue," Sam said with a warm voice.

"I don't know if it's pure infatuation, but it's getting out of hand."

"Let me understand. What happened to Sadie?" Sam asked, leaning forward in his chair, abandoning the opening of the wine.

"A few months ago, I heard she broke up with her boyfriend. Recently, she called me, and the moment I heard her voice, all those old feelings for her resurfaced. All day long, I've been thinking about her. All I want is to be close to her again, to lie down with her, and I think it might alleviate this uncontrollable desire for her. When I couldn't control it any longer, I lied to her."

"What did you lie about?" Sam inquired, placing his right palm under his chin. Paul's gestures and facial expressions caught Sam's attention, causing him to set aside the wine and focus on Paul.

"I told Sadie that I want her back and went even further to say that my wife is seeing someone else and we're secretly planning a divorce," Paul confessed.

"What?" Sam exclaimed. "Why would you say something like that?"

"All I wanted was to be intimate with her. I just needed to come up with such a lie," Paul tried to justify his feelings.

"What has been the result?" Sam asked, “what if your wife hears about it?” Sam added.

"At first, she refused and even left me at the bar. But this morning, she called me and later sent a text message. She wants to see me, and I think she's made up her mind to be with me. I feel guilty because all I want is to sleep with her and try to forget about her. What should I do?"

"Is that why you're worried?" Sam asked.

"Yes. I can't control myself anymore.”

"That's very simple."

"How?" Paul asked, his hands gesturing widely.

"Please, let's have a glass of wine first. What you're worrying about is so simple," Sam said. He opened the wine bottle, poured it into the two glasses, and handed one to Paul, who continued to stare at him. Sam took a sip from his glass.

"What are you waiting for? Drink your wine," Sam urged.

"You haven't told me anything. Why are you urging me to drink when you haven't told me anything? It's as if you don't understand how I feel. I want to sleep with her, but deep down, I feel guilty because she'll eventually find out that my wife and I never had a quarrel or planned to divorce. What should I do?"

"I said drink your wine. Why did you call me in the first place?" Sam asked.

"To seek a solution."

"Well, you've found the solution. Why do you still doubt that you can't overcome your troubles?"

"You haven't said anything to me, that's why I'm worried."

"You need to cheer up first before I can share my plans," Sam replied.

"Really?" Paul asked, widening his eyes.

"Yes!" Sam affirmed, and they locked eyes for a moment. Reluctantly, Paul took a sip from his glass, then placed it back on the table, his eyes still fixed on Sam.

"Tell me, I'm all ears."

"Now that Sadie is pursuing you, it's simple. Sleep with her, and once you've satisfied your sexual desire, say to Sadie that the terms of the divorce don't favor you and that you and Sara are considering reconciling for the sake of your baby girl. Then invite Sadie to your house for dinner. When she sees how you and your wife are behaving, she'll be convinced that you've reunited and forget about you.”

"But that's risky, Sam."

"No, it means you've officially broken up with her for the sake of your daughter. Or have you changed your mind about having sex with her?" Sam asked.

"What do you mean? If I'm not disturbed by her emotions, I wouldn't come to your office at this time. I'm restless Sam."

"Or just let her go," Sam teased him with a smile.

"Hmm... no, Sadie is too attractive. I can't."

"Then do as I said. Put everything on your daughter, and when Sadie tries to come between you and your child, provoke a quarrel. There are countless ways to push her away from you after achieving what you want.”

"Thank you so much. Let me call her now," Paul said gratefully, taking out his phone and dialing Sadie's number.

"Hi honey," he spoke softly. "I'm sorry for calling you at this time. I saw your message and I was so busy. Where are you right now?"

"I'm at home."

"What are your plans for this evening?"

"Hmm…I will be at home."

"Can we hang out later tonight? My heart is filled with negative emotions from my wife's behavior, and I don't think I can sleep at home tonight. Can we spend the night somewhere?"

"Together...?" Sadie emphasized the word.

"Okay, let's just hang out, please. We can discuss how the night will go when we get there."

"Better," Sadie agreed, and as she was about to end the call, Paul quickly added,

"Sadie, I want you to know something. I'm not just interested in your body as you used to say in college. I have deep feelings for you. Being with you brings me a sense of calmness. You can attest to that since the day we met in college. I care about you so much. I would have asked you to come over to my place, but I'm still finalizing the divorce agreement with my wife. Once that's done, I can invite you to my house."

"Why don't we take some time to be friends before considering a relationship?" Sadie suggested.

“Friend? Please, tell me what I can do to show you that I'm in love with you. Let me know what I can do," Paul pleaded. There was a moment of silence, and then he continued, "We'll talk about this when we meet later today. I miss you so much, and despite being apart for many years, my heart still beats for you." Paul could sense that Sadie was smiling.

"I love you, Sadie..." Paul said and he was waiting for Sadie to reciprocate the sentiment. Instead, she simply said,

"See you later in the evening," and she ended the call. Paul looked up at Sam and said,

"We're meeting later tonight."

"That's good to hear," Sam replied. Just then, the phone on the desk rang, and Sam quickly picked it up.

"Hello..." He paused, listening to the person on the other end of the line, and after a few seconds, he said,

"I'll be there now." Sam hung up the phone and said to Paul, "I need to attend to something very important..."

"I understand," Paul interrupted, and they shook hands. "I'll let you know how it goes."

"I'm eagerly waiting to hear," Sam replied as Paul left the office.
