What about her friend?

Author's pov

“James, what you are asking for is too big for me. Examine the whole thing yourself and check if it is reasonable in anyone's ear. You can't date two friends and never expect this to happen.…” She paused and looked at James who was standing and after sometime, he started moving around the sitting room of his mom.

“James, what you did is bad and I will never be part of it. The best thing to do is to let go of the two ladies.”

“Mum,” he stopped in the middle of the sitting room and faced his mom. “I didn't come here for you to condemn me. If Juliana is not important to me, I would have left her considering what she did to me when I went to her house. She slammed the door at me and called me so many kinds of names that no woman has said to me. If I don't love her, I wouldn't come this far begging you to go and meet her on my behalf.”

“But what you are asking for is unrealistic. First, you have destroyed the friendship of those two ladies.”

“Mum, hear me out. You haven't given me the time to explain what I want you to do for me…”

“Fine, please sit down and tell me what you want me to do for you.” His mum said and James sat down and the sitting room became quiet as she was waiting for James to say what he had in mind.

“Mom, all I want is for you to help me beg Juliana to give me a listening ear. I want to tell her how I feel and I can't do without her…”

“What about her friend…?”

“Stephanie ?”

“Yes, Stephanie ,” she snapped.

“Mum, I don't love her. Will I lose Juliana because of Stephanie  that I don't love? If fighting for Juliana will be the only thing I will do in my life, she is worth it. She is your friend and she might likely do whatever you tell her to do.”

“James, I can't tell her or force her to love you. She is an adult and has her own way of deciding what is best for her.”

“Please mom, I came here because you can do it and she will listen to you. I have been calling her for the past forty eight hours, but she has refused to pick up my call. I don't want to go to her house without her inviting me. This is the third time I had been to her house and she shot the door against me.” Then he stood up and he became angry and he added, “if you need my happiness…” His facial expressions changed immediately and he paused and walked towards the exit door.

“Are you leaving?” She asked and stood up.

“If you cannot understand me, who else would understand me?” His voice dropped and it was full of emotions.

“Please, come back and sit down. Let me give Juliana a call.”

That statement made James briskly walk to his mum and embrace her. He continuously blinked his eyes so that the tears in her eyes wouldn't fall off, and he tapped her mom on her back.

“I love you, mum,” his voice cracked and they held themselves for some seconds. James's mum was the first to pull herself away from her son and she stood up to take her phone. She immediately dialed Juliana's phone number and when it started ringing, she placed the phone against her right ear. As expected, the phone rang and rang and it ended without answering. They both looked at each other and their eyes understood it all. James's mum waited for a very few seconds and dialed Juliana's phone number again. The moment it started ringing, to the shock of both James and her mum, Juliana picked up the call.

“My beloved, how was your day?” She asked. Surprisingly, Juliana could not reply.

“Juliana! Juliana!!” She called out, and still it was quiet at the other side of the phone.

“Juliana, it's me, Mrs Lisa, James, I mean Gabriel’s mum.” The mentioning of the name made Juliana burst into tears.

“Oh no, this can't happen to you. Are you at home?” She asked hurriedly.

“Yes,” Juliana answered with a deep sorrowful voice.

“I am coming there now,” she ended the call and looked at James, who was always feeling guilty.

“Is she crying?” He asked with a sympathetic voice.

“Yes, and you need to take me to her place right now.”

“Am I following you?”

“No,” his mother raised her voice. “Drop me there and go back. If I had known her place, I wouldn't have allowed you to carry me to her place. I can feel her pain, and all you did to her.” James's mum went inside and took her bag and when she got to the sitting room again, she put her phone inside and she came out. James was already in the car and as soon as he saw his mum coming out, he quickly started the car and her mum sat on the back seat.

Some minutes later after the car had drove a reasonable distance, James asked,

“How are you going to come back home? Does it mean I still need to come and pick you up when you are done?”

“Exactly! And please, I don't want her to see your face unless she has agreed to see you.”

About thirty minutes later, James stopped in front of Juliana's house. The moment his mum came out of the car, he quickly drove away and was going back to her mom's house. Lisa admired the beautiful house within a split of seconds before taking the first step and walked up to the front door and knocked.

A few minutes later, she heard the sound of the opening key and it was Juliana who opened the door. On seeing Lisa, they both embraced themselves for a while. James's mum deliberately held her tight for a longer time and they both entered the house. It was obvious, Juliana's eyes were still swollen with a lot of sorrow.

“My beautiful lady, you don't need to keep weeping…”

“Gabriel set me up with my friend. Why would he ask me out when he was dating my friend.”

“Am I the one not getting the entire picture very clear? This was not what my son told me. In Fact, I'm not here because of him. I came to you because I wanted to see you. Please stop saying things concerning Gabriel. One thing you must understand is that you are the only woman my son has brought to me as his girlfriend. All the other ladies were meant to be replaced.” She went closer to Juliana and embraced her again and continuously petted her back.

“Please stop crying. Crying will not solve this.” Lisa said when she saw that there were tears coming out of Juliana's eyes.

“I can't stop crying because I can't stop thinking about how Gabriel broke my relationship with Stephanie .”

Lisa waited and when Juliana had stopped crying, she cleaned her tears and asked,

“Why did you accept my son when you knew that he was dating your friend?”

“I have never seen both of them together.”

“Don't you think this is a coincidence? Gabriel told me that he can't date two ladies and I told her to end one and be faithful to the other one.”

“Coincidence?” Juliana shook her head. “I almost introduced him to my ex husband at his house warming party because of my trust in him. I love him so much that I can't stop thinking of him. There is nothing you can tell me that will make me accept him back to my life.”

“I am not here to speak on his behalf. He should take responsibility for what he had caused. I am here to calm you down as a friend. Dating him or not dating him is none of my business. But one thing I will say is that, before you cut Gabriel off from you completely, you should give him a listening ear.”

“Why?” Juliana asked.

“It's for your well-being. I want you to have your last conversation with him. Then you can tell him to his face that it is worthless.”

“I will never allow him to come to this house. Whenever I set my eyes on him, I immediately see how he set me up with my friend.” She dragged her nose.

“It does not necessarily mean it must be here. You can meet him separately…” and a knock on the door made her to pause and said,

“Did Gabriel come with you?” She asked as she stood up.

“No,” Lisa replied.

“Then who is at the door?” Juliana asked.
