Who is the Guy?
Justin’s pov
When my daughter suggested I start with the good news, my mind drifted back to where it all began. It was noon, and I was driving Eric home after we discussed the plans for celebrating my new house. He was helping organize the party. Halfway to his house, Eric said,
"Justin, I never knew Sadie was so beautiful."
"Hmm..." I murmured, caught off guard. "What are your intentions with her?" The question slipped out, revealing the jealousy and emotions I had towards her.
"I'm leaving it in Daisy's hands. She promised she’d talk to her for me. Every time I see Sadie, my heart skips a beat, and ever since I left your house, I haven’t been able to get her out of my head."
"Can you handle that young lady? I doubt it, Eric. You two are quite different. I don’t think it’ll last. Besides, Sadie’s very selective."
"That’s why I need your help. Daisy told me she listens to everything you say. Please, assist me. You know I’m single, and being with her would change my life."
Eric couldn’t stop talking about Sadie. I didn’t tell him to stop, either, because I didn’t want him to know how much I cared about her. She had even joked about staying in my room on the night of the party, and I couldn't help imagining us together, knowing we might act as if nothing happened the next day or blame it on being drunk.
When we arrived at Eric's house, he was still waiting for an answer to the question he had repeatedly asked. As he stepped out of the car, he said,
"Justin, please, help me talk to her. I promise I’m serious about this." He held the car door, waiting for my reply.
"Eric, let me see what I can do after the party at my new house."
"Thank you so much." He sighed in relief and closed the door.
Ten minutes later, on my way home, I heard my phone’s notification sound. It was near the gear stick, so I glanced at it while driving. What I saw made me stop the car on the side of the road. It was unbelievable. I thought the dating app had disappeared, so receiving a message from them was a huge surprise.
"Dear 534953, congratulations! Your application to meet Stella has been approved. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to serve you better in the future. The meeting will take place at King’s Royal Hotel at 7 pm this coming Saturday."
"Whaaa...t!" I exclaimed in excitement, alone in the car. Is this for real? I grabbed the phone again and read the message a second time. I immediately recalled how disappointed I was when the dating app had sent a discouraging message weeks ago. Stella had become my new love interest, and I tried not to think of her after the earlier rejection. But now, we were going to meet. It felt as if she had traveled far away and was finally returning to me.
I was about to close the message when I noticed the date: this coming Saturday. The same Saturday as my house party.
"It’s the same Saturday!" I muttered, staring blankly at the steering wheel. What am I going to do? My first thought was to call Eric and tell him I would help him with Sadie. The return of Stella erased the romantic feelings I had for Sadie. But the problem was the date. If I didn’t change the date of my event, I couldn’t meet Stella. I needed to find a plan that worked in my favor.
I leaned back against the headrest, staring out the windshield, deep in thought. Suddenly, an idea came to mind.
"Why don’t I shift the housewarming party to the next Saturday and meet Stella this Saturday? I could even invite her to the party." I nodded to myself. Another thought emerged: How would I introduce her to Daisy? Would Stella stay at my house or prefer a hotel?
I stomped my foot on the car floor, trying to work out the perfect solution. The first step was to call Eric and share my new plan. I picked up the phone and dialed his number.
"Hey, Eric, there’s been a change of plans. The party won’t be this Saturday anymore. It’ll be next Saturday. I have something important that day."
"Oh no! But..." His voice sounded disappointed, likely because it affected his personal plans.
"Don’t worry, Eric. I’ll talk to Sadie for you. I’m sure she’ll agree to go on a date with you."
"Really?" His tone lifted.
"Yes. I’ll do that. But whether she accepts or not depends on her. I promise I’ll make sure she goes on a date with you."
"Thank you so much, Justin. You’ve made my day."
"Alright, Eric, I’ll talk to you later." I ended the call. Eric's situation was sorted. Now, I needed to inform everyone I had invited about the new date. I nodded, knowing that was the next task once I got home.
The next challenge was figuring out what to tell Daisy about my plans. I started the car and drove home, thinking about how I would explain everything to her. It wasn’t until I neared the house that a brilliant plan for Daisy and Sadie came to mind.
I got out of the car and hurried inside. I had a feeling Daisy would be in Sadie’s room. I knocked and opened the door, but there was no answer. As I climbed the stairs, I heard noise from Daisy’s room.
"Can I come in?" I asked after knocking.
"Come in," Daisy said, and I entered, immediately saying,
"Ladies, I have both good news and bad news."
"Please, tell us the good news first," Daisy replied.
"The good news is, I’m going back to coaching. I’ll be traveling to sign a deal with the Sharks Cubs."
"Wow, that’s great! So, what’s the bad news?" Daisy asked, and I noticed Sadie looking down.
"What’s wrong with Sadie?"
"Don’t worry about her. Tell us the bad news. I hope it’s not too bad."
"The bad news is I’ll be traveling this Saturday, so the housewarming will be two Saturdays from now."
Out of nowhere, Daisy jumped up and hugged Sadie.
"It works out for you!" Daisy said, and Sadie, who wasn’t happy before, suddenly looked excited as they hugged each other again. Seeing their joy, I wondered if I should tell Daisy about my plan to invite someone new to the party. I stood there watching them, curious about what they were hiding.
"What’s going on between you two?" I asked.
"Nothing, Dad, you wouldn’t understand," Daisy said with a grin.
"Sadie, can I speak with you for a moment?" I said. Both girls turned and stared at me.
"Why can’t you say it in front of me? Sadie is my friend, and I knew her before you did," Daisy teased.
"No, no, it’s not what you think..."
"Then say it here," Daisy insisted.
"Alright," I sighed and sat on the bed. Daisy sat to my right, while Sadie was already on my left. They both watched me silently.
"Sadie, I want to ask you for a favor. I haven’t mentioned this before, but please, do this for me."
"What is it?" Sadie asked, curiosity in her eyes.
"Eric wants to go on a date with you. Just a date. He only wants to be friends."
"Is that why he came here this morning?" Sadie asked. Before I could respond, she added, "I’m sorry, but I’ll be traveling soon."
"When?" I asked.
"This Friday," Sadie replied, and Daisy chimed in, "Dad, part of the reason we were happy is because Sadie has an interview on Saturday, and we thought she’d miss the party. But now that it’s postponed, she’ll be back before then."
"But I’m in a relationship now..." Sadie trailed off, and I looked at her, surprised.
"Who’s the lucky guy?" I asked, glancing at Daisy, hoping she’d give me a hint. But both of them remained silent. I stood up, positioning myself in front of them.
"What are you hiding?"
Suddenly, they burst into laughter.
"I’m serious. Who’s the guy?" I pressed.
"Ask her!" Daisy pointed at Sadie, both still laughing. I quickly grabbed Sadie’s hand and led her out of the room, figuring she might be more open without Daisy there. After closing the door, I asked again,
"Now that Daisy isn’t here, who’s the lucky guy?"
