Who is there?

"What's so difficult that you can't tell me?" she asked. "Say whatever you want to say. I don't think there's anything surprising that will shock me. You've done so many deceitful things."
"Mum, I'm sorry for all the lies I've told you. If I should apologize to those I've hurt, you're the first person I must apologize to. I just want to tell you that my last office job wasn't real. I fabricated everything to make you happy. The video and pictures I took were all fake. It was actually Juliana's office. I'm sorry.”
This news shattered her mother's heart, and she bowed her face towards the floor.
"I'm sorry, I know this will hurt you, but I need to tell you the truth before I tell others. I am truly sorry," he said with a depressed voice. There was silence for about two minutes, and James hoped his mother would break the silence.
"You may leave. If I can't forgive you, how can I expect others to forgive you? You should go and change your ways." Her eyes had turned red, but she managed to stand up and embrace James.
James couldn't utter a word. To escape the agony of seeing his mom on the verge of tears, he immediately left the house, got into his car, and drove away. Along the way, he took out his phone, contemplating whether to call Kate or Jane to inform them of his visit. As he was about to dial the number, he thought to himself,
"Why don't I go to their houses? It would be better than facing rejection over the phone."
His first destination was Kate's place. He parked his car a distance away and walked towards the door, knocking gently. After a few minutes, a man came out of the house, wrapped in a white towel.
"Please, I'm looking for Kate,” he said.
"Kate?" The man looked at James's face and was about to say something when they both heard Kate's voice saying,
"Honey, who is that?"
"Come and see for yourself. He said he wants to see you," the man replied. A few seconds later, Kate stood beside the man at the door, visibly shocked.
"So you finally came. It's late. Meet my Honey," she said, putting her hand around his waist.
"Kate," he said calmly, "I'm not here to ask you to take me back into your life. I'm here to apologize for all the things I've done to you. You deserve better. You're beautiful and strong, and I shouldn't have treated you the way I did."
Those words melted Kate's heart, and she lowered her face to the ground, trying to control her emotions. James then took out an apology card and handed it to her.
"I'm sorry," he said, turning away. As Kate blinked her eyes, tears came down her cheeks.
"James, wait!" she shouted with a cracked voice after opening the beautiful card James had used to apologize. She ran to catch up with James and embraced him tightly.
"I have to go. Your boyfriend is waiting for you."
"What about our son?"
"I'll come back, and we can talk about him later. For now, I came here to apologize to you. I don't want to cause any issues with you and your boyfriend. I've made my mistakes, and I regret all my actions." He pulled away from her, and as they embraced, James felt the bump of her stomach. Initially, he hadn't noticed it because she was wearing a gown.
"I can see that you're pregnant."
"Yes."
"I wish you the best with your boyfriend," he hugged her once more and drove away while Kate stood there, watching him as he left.
The next person to visit was Jane. Jane's house was in the lower part of the city, about an hour's journey. When he arrived, he parked his car a short distance away and approached the door on foot. It was nearly noon when he knocked. As expected, Jane was the one who opened the door, and she exclaimed angrily.
"Who told you where my house is? Hmmm... that journalist?"
"I'm here to apologize for everything I did to you."
"There's no need to apologize. I've already told you over the phone. I'd rather see you dead than coming near me."
"I said I'm sorry," James spread his arms wide.
"Save your apologies for yourself. I don't need you. I hate you," she shouted at him, not giving James a chance to bring out the apology card, and she slammed the door.
James stood there for about five minutes, but Jane didn't come out again. He took a deep breath, nodded his head, and walked back to his car. Before starting the car, he thought to himself,
"Wouldn't Stephanie do the same thing as Jane, or maybe even worse? Let me do what my mum told me and then leave."
He started the car and drove away. It took him about an hour to leave Jane's neighborhood and redirect his car towards Stephanie 's house. As he drove, his heart was pounding. Then he stopped the car and questioned himself,
"Why am I feeling panicked?"
He started the car again and continued driving. When he was almost at Stephanie 's house, he stopped, feeling his breath getting heavy.
"Is it because of Jane that I'm feeling this way? Or something unique is going to happen between Stephanie and I?"
He got out of the car and walked towards Stephanie 's house. The moment he knocked on the front door, his heart felt like it was about to burst out of his chest.
"Who's there?" Stephanie asked from inside.
