You broke my heart

Sadie's pov

It's been five hours now since I've been waiting for my mum to come back from wherever she went, and it's already 8pm. Where could she have gone in this city without returning home? Did Mrs Fiona tell her that I wasn't alone and that I was with Justin? I started having some rational thinking and I didn't know what to conclude. I always feel anxious when I pick up my phone to call her.

I was in my room, contemplating how I would face my mum when she returned, when I heard Justin's voice calling me.

"Honey..." he knocked on my door.

"Please come inside," I said, and he pushed the door open and entered.

"Where has your mum been? It's already night. When are you going to call her and ask where she's been?"

"I'm afraid. Just the thought of her coming back and finding the two of us here terrifies me."

"Are you going to choose your mum over me, Sadie?" Justin asked. At first, I remained silent, and he took my silence as an answer.

"I thought you were on my side all this time."

"You, I am on your side, you still don't understand me? It's not easy for me." I walked up to him and looked into his eyes. "Can't you see all the effort I've put into making things okay?"

Suddenly, Justin embraced me and lifted me off the ground. I held onto him tightly and wrapped my legs on him and he said,

"Whatever happens, I'll be with you." Then he kissed me so passionately that I felt content. When I pulled my lips away from his, I said,

"I love you, and nothing will stop me from loving you."

"Go to the kitchen and prepare something for us to eat, and also something for your mum when she comes back. Or should I help you?" He smiled at me.

"If you want to, but don't worry, I can handle the cooking."

I went to the kitchen and quickly prepared dinner. While it was cooking, my phone rang, and my heart started racing. I thought my mom was close to the house. Out of fear, I watched my phone ring until it stopped. It was when she called again that I finally answered.

"Hi mum..." I said slowly, and she excitedly said,

"My dear Sadie, I'm sorry I didn't tell you where I was when we first talked. I was in your friend's city."

"My friend's city?" I raised my voice. "For what reason?" I asked.

"I lied to you about leaving."

"Really?" I was shocked. "And what were you doing there?"

"I know this might be embarrassing and shocking to you. I wanted your relationship with Justin to end before I left. Since you didn't come to meet me at the airport, I decided not to go back until I separated the two of you. I... I..." she stammered and continued, "I've been working with a young man, and he even came to Justin's house with some gifts."

"Did you send him?" I widened my eyes and ran to the living room where Justin was sitting. I put the phone on speaker.

"Mum, are you saying you sent that guy who brought those gifts to Justin's house?”

"Yes, I was the one. We wanted both of you to have a misunderstanding, but our plan didn't work out well. We were still working on another plan when I received your text message. I'm grateful you changed your mind on your own. So, I'm still here, and I thought I could catch the last flight, but I couldn't. Tomorrow morning, I'll be taking the first flight, and I'll be happy to see you."

"Tell her I'm here with you," Justin whispered, gesturing his hands to Sadie.

"Uh... um..." I struggled to tell her that over the phone.

"Do you want to tell me something?" my mum asked.

"No, see you tomorrow," I abruptly said.

"Okay," and sensing Justin's anger and the potential of him saying something in the background that my mum might hear, I quickly ended the call.

"Why can't you tell her?" Justin asked.

"Is that what's bothering you? Didn't you hear that my mum was behind the guy who brought those gifts? Until now, I can't understand how a stranger knew exactly what I love and got my phone number."

"That's why I was angry with you. I thought you were lying to me. I thought about it multiple times in my room. How could he know precisely what you love? That's when I doubted you. I know your phone number isn't that hard to find, but buying you your favorite things means you must have talked to him before that day." He walked up to me, held both my hands, and added,

"I'm sorry for my behavior and not trusting you. If I didn't love you with all my heart, I wouldn't have reacted that way." He held my waist, and we kissed. From there, knowing my mum wasn't coming that day, he took me to my room, and we made love. My heartbeat returned to normal, and I felt at home for the first time since we came to my mum's house.

The next day, I woke up suddenly, panicking at the thought of my mum coming. I thought of cleaning the entire house before she arrived, hoping it would calm her anger. Since I woke up early, I decided to clean the house and prepare food.

I was in the kitchen when I heard Justin's voice calling for me.

"I'm here!" I raised my voice and went to meet him.

"How was your night?"

"So sweet with you."

"Yours?" I smirked at him.

"Sweeter," he said, glancing at what I was doing. "You're already cooking. That's kind of you. Hmm... I'm hungry. You know what happened last night," he said, and I chuckled.

He was implying that he had exhausted all his energy making our night enjoyable. He kissed my cheeks, and in that moment, I felt like no one, not even my mum, should come our way. Life was truly beautiful with Justin. Just as he was about to leave the kitchen, he turned and said,

"Let me help you. It's always a great joy for me to be with you."

We both prepared breakfast, and with him by my side, we were fast at it.

A few minutes later, breakfast was ready, and I placed it on the dining table. Just as we were about to eat, we heard a knock on the front door. My spoon almost fell from my hand when I heard my name.

"Sadie!" My mum called with some delight and in her wildest dreams, thought that Justin was with me in the house. I stood up and walked to the door, completely unaware of my surroundings. I didn't realize that when I stood up and went to the door, Justin also stood up and followed me as a way to help me emotionally. When I opened the door, my mum looked at me as if I were a monster. The joy I initially saw on her face vanished instantly, and I began to wonder if she had seen Justin from the front door, not realizing that Justin was standing behind me.

"Why did you misinform me? Sadie, I want to see you in my room," my mum said and walked into the room. At that moment, I noticed Justin standing behind me. He wanted to say something, but my mum's facial expressions were not welcoming.

Everything happened quickly. I glanced at Justin's face as I walked away, and he whispered into my ear.

"Be strong. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me."

I followed my mum into her room, and the first thing she did was close the door, probably thinking Justin would come inside. At that moment, I didn't even remember that I had put on the hand chain I had hoped she would see and it would calm her down. Everything was happening rapidly.

"You broke my heart. This is not the girl I raised. I was both your mother and father when things were very difficult. I made sure to please you and sacrifice my own happiness just to make you happy. Why have you decided to break my heart? Why have you caused me so much pain? Are you blind?"

"But Mum, I'm in love with him. He's the one my heart has chosen. I can't live without him..." I cried out.

"Then I will make you live without him," she said, walking towards me. I wasn't sure if she was about to hit me out of anger, and I could imagine her hand raised in the air.

"I'm pregnant," I raised my voice and added, "and you shouldn't lay your hands on me."

Suddenly, the phone slipped from my mum's hand and fell to the ground, with the glass on the screen shattering. She couldn't believe her eyes, and I didn't know that Justin had heard my voice. He rushed into my mother's room and stood in front of me, and no one had acted in my defense like this. In fact, I didn't tell him about my pregnancy, and hearing it for the first time, he wasn't entirely sure and asked me again.

"Darling, are you pregnant with my child?" He really wanted to know if it was just anxiety or if it was true. His reaction surprised my mum, who must have been thinking that if I were really pregnant, Justin wouldn't be surprised and wouldn't show such disbelief. I saw both my mum and Justin staring at me. In my mum's mind, what I had just said had to be false, and on Justin's face, he wanted a "yes" as an answer.

"Darling, are you pregnant with my child?" He asked the second time, and the room fell silent for me to break.
