I didn’t know how else to handle it
“I will make dinner tonight. No need for takeaway,” Dora said, breaking the silence in the room.
Austin was surprised by her offer. It had been a long time since she had cooked for him, and the thought brought a smile to his face. What he didn’t know was that Dora was nervous, her heart racing as if she were about to embark on a dangerous mission. Cooking was her way of distracting herself from the tension building inside her.
Austin sat on the couch in the living room, reminiscing about the times they used to share meals together. It had been over two years since he last tasted her cooking, and he was eager to savor it again. Things seemed to be falling into place for him, and he decided not to bring up the past, fearing it might ruin the fragile peace between them.
When dinner was ready, Austin took his first bite and closed his eyes, savoring the flavors. “This is amazing,” he said, unable to hide his delight.
“Thank you,” Dora replied quietly, her mind elsewhere.
After dinner, Austin insisted on washing the dishes while Dora busied herself with her plan. She needed his signature on the divorce papers, and once she had it, she would hide the documents with her friends Sienna or Douglas until the six-month waiting period was over. Unaware of the signed divorce papers, Austin would have no choice but to leave her. After that, she planned to move in with her friend Fiona until she gave birth and figured out her next steps.
As Austin worked on his laptop later that evening, Dora brought him a cup of tea. He thanked her sincerely, touched by her thoughtfulness.
“How did she know I needed this?” he wondered, feeling a renewed sense of affection for her. Little did he know, her gesture was part of her plan to win his trust.
A few minutes later, Dora approached him again. “I need a guarantor’s signature for some documents. Will you do it for me?” she asked, her voice calm but her heart pounding.
Austin’s face lit up with excitement. He saw this as a sign that she still trusted him and considered him an important part of her life. Without hesitation, he agreed. “Of course, I will.”
To prevent him from reading the documents carefully, Dora sat close to him, holding the papers and pointing out where he needed to sign. Her proximity stirred something in Austin. The way she smelled, the softness of her skin brushing against his, and the strands of her hair falling around her face made it hard for him to focus. He signed the papers without even glancing at them, completely unaware of what they contained.
“Yes, I did it,” Dora thought to herself, relieved that Austin had signed the divorce agreement. She flashed him a grateful smile, her dimples showing. “Thank you,” she said sweetly.
Her smile was the final push that broke Austin’s self-control. Before she could react, he grabbed her elbow and pulled her onto his lap. His hands settled on her waist, pulling her closer as he kissed her passionately, catching her completely off guard.
Dora’s initial shock gave way to a strange sense of surrender. She closed her eyes, her guard slowly melting away as Austin deepened the kiss. His hands trailed up her back, sending shivers down her spine. For a moment, she forgot about the divorce, the lies, and the plan. All she could feel was the warmth of his touch.
When Austin finally pulled away, both of them were breathless. Dora’s eyes remained closed, her heart racing. Austin lingered close, his lips brushing against hers as he struggled to control his emotions. He wanted more, but he knew he had to tell her the truth before taking their relationship further. His guilt weighed heavily on him, and he knew he couldn’t move forward without her forgiveness.
Dora, on the other hand, was still reeling from the intensity of the moment. She had been so lost in his touch that she hadn’t noticed the divorce papers falling to the floor. It wasn’t until Austin chuckled and said, “Sorry, I’ll pick those up,” that she snapped out of her daze.
Before she could stop him, Austin bent down to gather the scattered papers. His smile faded as his eyes landed on the word “DIVORCE” printed boldly on one of the pages. Dora’s heart skipped a beat as she watched his expression change from confusion to anger.
Austin’s hands trembled as he read the document carefully. The contents made his blood boil. He looked up at Dora, his eyes filled with betrayal. “What is this?” he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.
Dora’s face paled. She had been caught, and there was no way to explain her way out of this. “Austin, I…” she stammered, but the words wouldn’t come.
Austin stood up, the papers clenched tightly in his hand. “You were going to divorce me without even talking to me about it? How could you do this, Dora?”
Tears welled up in Dora’s eyes as she struggled to find the right words. “I didn’t know how else to handle it,” she admitted. “I thought this was the only way.”
Austin shook his head in disbelief. “The only way? By lying to me and sneaking around behind my back? Do you really think so little of me?”
Dora looked down, unable to meet his gaze. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Austin took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. “We need to talk about this, Dora. Properly. No more secrets, no more lies.”
Dora nodded, her heart heavy with guilt. She knew he was right, but the thought of facing the truth terrified her. As they sat down to talk, the air between them was thick with tension. Both of them knew that their relationship would never be the same again.
Austin held up the divorce papers, his face a mix of anger and disbelief. “So all this pretending was for this?” he asked, his voice cold and sharp.
Dora stood frozen, her heart pounding in fear. She knew Austin’s anger well, but his calm demeanor scared her even more. This was the quiet before the storm, and she had seen enough of his emotions to know that whatever came next would not be in her favor.
“What? My dear wife has nothing to say now?” Austin sneered, noticing her stepping back.
“It’s… it’s not what you think…” Dora stammered, her voice trembling as she took another step back.
“I’m listening, Dora. Explain it to me,” Austin said, his tone low and dangerous as he moved closer.
Dora gulped, her eyes darting to the vein pulsing on his forehead. She knew he could see right through her lies.
“It’s not what you’re thinking, right?” Austin said, voicing the very lie she was about to tell.
Dora nodded quickly, hoping to avoid the confrontation she knew was coming.
“Fine, I believe you,” Austin said, his tone shifting unexpectedly. “Let’s talk about the kiss we just shared.”
Dora’s eyes widened in shock. She hadn’t expected this turn in the conversation.
“Now that my wife is responding to my kisses, how about we take things to the next level? Bedroom or living room?” Austin asked, his voice calm but menacing.
Dora blinked, confused for a moment, but when his words sank in, she gasped and quickly backed away, her legs trembling.
Austin tore the divorce papers into pieces and charged toward her. Dora let out a shriek as she tried to run, but in an instant, she found herself thrown over his shoulder. Her heart raced as he carried her effortlessly, ignoring her screams and pleas. She barely noticed the sound of the door slamming against the wall as he entered the bedroom and tossed her onto the bed.
Panic set in when she heard the door lock. She scrambled to get up, but Austin was already standing over her, breathing heavily like a wild animal. His eyes burned with anger as he stared at her, and Dora’s survival instincts kicked in. She jumped off the bed and ran toward the bathroom, knocking over anything in her path. But Austin was faster. He grabbed her and pushed her back onto the bed.
“Please, Austin, listen to me!” Dora cried, her voice breaking as she tried to defend herself.
But Austin wasn’t in the mood to listen. He tore off his shirt in one swift motion and pinned her down, his hands gripping her wrists tightly.
“I’m sorry, please, just…” Dora started, but Austin cut her off.
“I’m not,” he said, his voice cold.
“Please, listen to me!” she begged, tears streaming down her face as he kissed her neck.
“I am listening,” he replied, his voice low as he bit and then licked the same spot. The fire he had controlled earlier now consumed him, and he was too far gone to think rationally.
Dora sobbed, struggling to free herself, but the more she fought, the tighter he held her. With one hand, he pinned her wrists above her head, and with the other, he began unbuttoning her shirt.
“You want a divorce? First, let’s fulfill our duties as husband and wife. Maybe I haven’t been satisfying you properly, and that’s why you want to leave me. Or maybe you’re just using this as an excuse to walk away after six months,” Austin said, his voice bitter as he trailed kisses from her neck to her collarbone.
“No, no, that’s not it!” Dora cried, her voice desperate.
“I can prove you wrong tonight, and every night after,” Austin said, biting her shoulder gently before soothing the spot with his tongue. Dora shivered, her body betraying her fear.
“Austin, please don’t do this. Don’t make me hate you,” she pleaded, her voice breaking as she struggled against him.
“You didn’t seem to mind my kisses earlier. What changed?” Austin asked, his voice rising with frustration.
He was hurt, deeply hurt. Dora had given him hope, only to crush it with her lies. She had tricked him, played with his emotions, and now she wanted to leave him. The sight of the divorce papers with his signature had pushed him over the edge. He couldn’t think straight anymore.
“She used me,” Austin thought bitterly. “She pretended to work on our marriage, but she never wanted to stay. Why do women always play with my emotions? Don’t I deserve better?”
“Please, Austin, don’t do this to me,” Dora begged, her voice trembling as she felt his breath on her bare skin.
“It’s okay, baby. You know I would never hurt you,” Austin murmured, his hands moving gently over her body. But Dora’s mind was racing.
“Baby!” The word echoed in her mind, and suddenly, she remembered Dr. Sarah’s warning: “No intercourse until the next scan.” Panic surged through her as she realized the danger she was in.
