You cannot get away with this

Luther’ Pov

I walked into the club and everything stopped for me. There she was, Charlotte. She wrapped around someone else like he owned her. Her hips pressed against him, her smile wide, and her eyes full of challenge. She wanted me to see it. That was clear. I could barely hear the music anymore. Every step I took towards them felt heavier than the last. People called my name, tried to pull me into conversation, but I had no interest. My focus was fixed. I could not look away from her.

As I moved closer, I recognised the man beside her. One of the DJs my manager recently hired. I had seen his documents but never met him in person until now, and now was the worst time to make an impression. I cut through the crowd, pushed past dancers, and marched straight to the middle of the floor.

"Take your hands off her," I said, my voice louder than the music as I grabbed Charlotte by the arm and yanked her back.

"What is wrong with you?" she shouted, her eyes wide with shock. She stormed back to the DJ and clung to his arm like she belonged to him. The way she leaned into him, looking at me like she had won, I could feel my jaw tighten.

"Do not touch her again, man," the DJ said, standing straighter, trying to act bold. He had no idea who he was dealing with. I laughed without humour and swung. My fist cracked against his face before he could say another word. Blood spilled from his nose as Charlotte screamed. The music stopped. People scattered, backing away quickly, clearing the floor like a great storm. A girl about Charlotte’s age ran to her. "Are you okay?" she asked as Charlotte moved to help the DJ. Her friend stopped her.

"You have lost your mind!" Charlotte yelled at me, trembling with rage. "You cannot get away with this."

"You are mistaken," I said flatly. "Because he is fired." I turned to leave, but not before she raised her middle finger and walked off. Her hair moved with each step, and I followed her out, ignoring the DJ's shouts behind me.

They did not make it far. I caught up just before they reached the car park. Her friend was holding her as she cried. I hated seeing her like that, even after what she had just done.

"Charlotte," I called out.

She spun around, nearly bumping into someone. "Do not say my name. Do not come any closer," she snapped, wiping her face.

"Why would you do that?" she asked, her voice breaking. "You humiliated me. I just wanted to enjoy myself tonight, but you ruined everything."

"Is that what you call it?" I asked, taking a step forward. "Throwing yourself at some random guy in front of me?"

She said nothing.

"How did you even get in here? You are underage. Do you think I would not notice?"

"Let us go, Kate," she said, turning to her friend, who was on the phone. "This is pointless."

"You are not leaving until we talk," I said, moving in front of her. She looked up at me, anger rising in her chest.

"No. There is nothing left to say," she said. "You called me a child, remember?"

I glanced at the hand she kept glaring at, my hand holding her wrist. Her body stood there, glowing under the lights, the same body she had pressed against another man just minutes ago.

"And are you not proving my point right now?" I said. "Yelling in public, storming off, refusing to speak calmly."

"I am done talking to you," she said, pulling her arm free. "Where did Loveth go?" she asked Kate, looking around.

"He left with some girl. Looks like we are calling a cab," Kate replied, her voice quiet and shaken.

“I’ll drive you both home. Get in,” I said, knowing Charlotte wasn’t going to make it easy.

“No,” she replied coldly. I sighed. “Either you get in the car, or I call your mum and tell her you're drunk, at a party, and throwing yourself at random guys.”

Her body froze. She shot a nervous glance at her friend Kate, who looked just as guilty. They had clearly lied to get out tonight. And now they were caught.

“Fine,” she muttered, not looking at me as she walked to my car. I unlocked the doors, and we got in. She gave me directions to Kate’s house, and that’s when it clicked, Kate’s parents weren’t home. Charlotte’s mum probably thought they were having a quiet sleepover.

When we reached the house, Kate quickly ran inside. I moved in front of Charlotte before she could follow.

“What now?” she asked, folding her arms.

“Are you happy now?” I asked, stepping closer to her.

“What are you talking about?”

“That dance,” I said, eyes locked on hers. “You were trying to get a reaction out of me. And you did. So… are you happy?”

“I told you I just wanted to have fun,” she snapped.

“No, you wanted to forget about me. And when I showed up, you turned it into a game.”

She backed up a little. Her silence said more than words.

I stepped forward again. “Just admit it. You saw me, and you wanted to hurt me back.”

“And what about you?” she shot back. “You were flirting with two girls at the same time.”

Her voice shook. She was angry… and jealous. I couldn’t help but like it.

“I think you still care,” I said softly.

She glared at me. “You think too much of yourself, Luther. There’s nothing left between us.”

“Is that so?” I asked, letting my eyes drift down her body. “So if I touched you right now, you’d feel nothing?”

She swallowed hard. “Don’t flatter yourself. I’m just a kid, remember?”

“No one should touch you but me,” I whispered, pulling her close. Her chest pressed against mine. I could feel her breath hitch.

“Let me go,” she said, but she didn’t move away.

“Not yet,” I said gently. “I need to say this.”

She looked up at me, her lips slightly parted.

“Seeing you with that DJ tonight… it messed with my head. I realised I care about you. More than I should. I’ve tried to ignore it, to keep you at arm’s length, but I can’t anymore.”

She blinked, looking shaken. For a moment, I thought she’d lean in. Then she shoved me.

“You’ve got some nerve,” she said, voice hard. “You think you can play with my heart, then show up acting like the victim? I’m done, Luther. You don’t mean anything to me. You're just the mistake my family brought into our lives.” And with that, she turned and walked away.
