Not the job, I want her
Author’s POV
“I don’t know why I’m feeling scared,” James said, pressing the brakes of his car as he stopped in front of the office building where he was starting work. He glanced at his wristwatch and realized he had plenty of time before meeting the new CEO.
“I don’t understand why I’m afraid,” he muttered again, although deep down, he knew the reason. He feared his mother’s reaction if he didn’t get the job, worrying it would affect their relationship and that she would never believe in him again. That was something he never wanted to happen.
James, dressed in a blue suit, looked bewildered. Realizing he had just twenty-five minutes before 9:00 am, he stepped out of his car and walked towards the glassy twenty-storey building. As he entered the lift, another thought crossed his mind.
“How can I be sure this will work?” he wondered, clutching his black suitcase.
“Let me give it a try. There’s no harm in trying,” he encouraged himself. When he reached the reception area, he approached the two female receptionists, pretending that Michael hadn’t informed him of anything.
“Hi, my name is James Samson.” He opened his bag and showed them his appointment letter. One of the receptionists took the letter and, as she read through it, exclaimed, “Congratulations! Today is your first day at work.”
“Yes,” James nodded, managing a professional smile.
“Welcome to AZ Corporation.” The receptionist turned her chair towards her computer. “Please give me a few minutes to get your office keys.”
At that moment, James couldn’t help but think about Michael and one particular thing.
“Why did Michael want to play a prank on me? That would have been the most unnecessary prank he could think of. His message kept me restless all night, and Stephanie and I were worried sick…” He was lost in thought about the ordeal he had gone through because of Michael when the receptionist interrupted him.
“Mr. James, there’s a slight issue. The management wants you to meet the new CEO before I can give you the keys to your office.”
“Really?” His lips parted in surprise.
“Yes, sir. You can wait in the waiting room on the third floor. Once the CEO arrives, I’ll either call you or come to get you. Please provide me with your phone number.”
“Okay,” he replied, giving her his number and turning to walk away.
“So it was true. Michael wasn’t lying. I’m grateful he told me in advance. Otherwise, how would I have prepared? I would have been full of uncertainty,” he thought as the lift descended and stopped on the third floor. Stepping out, he saw a well-furnished area with executive chairs and televisions in every corner. The sign hanging from the ceiling read: “Please wait here.”
James glanced around the room and chose a chair to sit in. Out of the ten televisions, nine displayed the achievements and goals of AZ Corporation. It was a well-known institution and one of the largest insurance companies.
With exactly two minutes to 9:00, James’s phone rang, and he quickly answered.
“Hello,” he greeted, hearing a woman’s voice on the other end.
“Good morning, Mr. James Samson. My name is Sara Joe, and I’m calling about your appointment with the new CEO. She is currently in her office on the tenth floor, the first office on your left. Someone will assist you there.”
“Okay, Sara,” James replied, waiting for the receptionist to finish. He took a deep breath, entered the lift, and pressed the button for the tenth floor. Upon arrival, he saw the CEO’s secretary as soon as he opened the door on the left.
“Welcome. How can I assist you?” she asked.
“My name is James Samson, and I have an appointment with the CEO,” he said as the young woman looked at him, her fingers resting on the keyboard of her Dell computer.
“Do you have an appointment?” she inquired.
“Yes, I do.”
“Okay. Please wait here.” She stood up, and as she was about to enter the office, she smiled and said, “Could you please take a seat while I inform the CEO?”
“Okay,” James replied, sitting down and facing the secretary. A few seconds later, she emerged from the office.
“Sir, you can go in. She’s waiting for you.”
“Thank you,” James said, standing up, suitcase in hand, and walking towards the office, his heart pounding.
After a gentle knock on the door, he heard a voice say, “Come in.”
He grasped the door handle, opened the door, and as soon as he stepped inside, he closed it behind him and raised his gaze. The sight before him almost made his suitcase slip from his hand.
“I’ve seen this person before,” he thought, walking towards her desk. He quickly read the nameplate, which displayed the name Mrs. Blenda Dan.
“Good morning, Mrs. Blenda,” James greeted, and upon mentioning her name, he recognised her as his girlfriend's friend and couldn’t help but smile.
“What an elegant beauty,” he thought as he admired her hair and the hint of cleavage. Blenda looked away from her laptop and leaned back in her chair.
“Please, have a seat,” she said, locking eyes with him.
“What’s your name?” she asked.
“Mr. James Samson…”
“Yes,” she paused, turning to her laptop to retrieve James’s CV. “Yes, your CV is in front of me. Besides Paul and John Insurance Company, where else did you gain experience, as mentioned in your CV?”
“I also worked at…”
“Please, Mr. James Samson, I don’t want to prolong this conversation as I have many things to do. I’m sorry, but the new management cannot employ you,” she said, maintaining her gaze. Her words felt authoritative, leaving James disoriented and struggling to express his intentions.
“Ma’am, you didn’t even give me a chance to prove myself,” he pleaded.
“You don’t have the type of experience we’re looking for,” she tapped her fingers on the desk.
“But if you don’t give me a chance, how can I gain the necessary experience?” James asked.
“Mr. James Samson, this is not a training ground. We hire experts. I’m sorry, but I’m done with you. Perhaps in the future, we can work together.” She turned back to her computer screen and promptly removed James’s CV from view.
“What am I going to do? What will I tell my mum?” James thought, struggling to collect himself and leave the office.
“This feels like the shattering of my dreams. I despise this woman,” he thought, stamping his feet on the floor. While he was still seated, Blenda looked at him and said, “I’m done with you. You may leave.”
James sluggishly rose to his feet, his eyes fixed on her. He turned and walked out of the office.
“To continue my relationship with Stephanie, she must end her friendship with this heartless Juliana,” he thought angrily as he left the office, filled with rage.
“How did it go?” the secretary asked, but James didn’t respond. He walked out, entered the lift, and as it descended, he kept asking himself, “What am I going to tell my mum?” He felt confused. Even though he tried to hate Juliana, whom he had never met before, his initial feelings resurfaced, stirring memories of how he felt when he first saw Juliana’s pictures.
“Didn’t you notice her enticing lips?” a strange thought popped into his mind. “Is there anything I can do?” he wondered as he got into his car. In the solitude of his vehicle, he voiced his thoughts.
“For over six months, no man has touched that beautiful and alluring woman. If I can’t secure the job, then I’ll pursue her,” he suddenly forgot about losing the job and became emotionally attached to Juliana.
He started his car and drove off, searching for a supermarket. Eventually, he stopped in front of a flower shop, hurried inside, bought a beautiful red rose and a small white envelope, then returned to his car. Turning on the engine, he drove back and parked in front of the administrative building. With a pen in hand, he poured his emotions onto paper.
He was still writing when his phone rang; it was Danielle calling.
“Hello, my dear. I’ll call you back. I’m still in the interview,” James said.
“Okay,” she replied before ending the call. James got out of his car and approached one of the security guards on the first floor. Acting as a delivery person, he handed over the rose and letter he had written.
“This gift is for the new CEO, Mrs. Juliana Dan,” he informed the guard, hoping to take advantage of Juliana’s emotional state. After delivering the gift, he proceeded with his plan. The guard took it to the tenth floor and handed it to Juliana’s secretary, who then entered Juliana’s office.
However, upon entering, the secretary discovered that Juliana was not at her desk.
“Where has she gone?” she wondered, as she hadn’t seen Juliana leave. Unaware that Juliana had briefly stepped out to use the restroom, the secretary carefully placed the rose and letter on Juliana’s desk before exiting the room.
Several minutes later, Juliana returned, and her attention was immediately drawn to the beautiful rose on her table. Intrigued, she picked it up and inhaled its delightful fragrance. When she noticed the attached letter, she couldn’t help but wonder, “Is this Justin’s doing, or who could have sent this?” Curiosity piqued, she swiftly opened the letter to read its contents.
