I'm psychological down. Please!
Sadie’s POV
“I’m sorry, your mom didn’t tell you?” Leo said, and before I knew it, he knelt on one knee, tears streaming down his face.
I couldn’t hold back my anger, and my voice changed suddenly. Leo thought his condition caused what happened, so he reached out to touch my chest and asked,
“My mom? To do what?”
Feeling betrayed in that moment, everything happened so fast that he noticed the sadness in my tone. I turned and went inside, with only one thought: my mom must have told Leo I was coming today. I went straight to my mom’s door and knocked twice. Even before she came out, I shook my head. As soon as she opened her room door, I said,
“Thank you so much. You set me up?” I couldn’t look at her face and turned to go down to my room, and she immediately followed me.
“Sadie! Sadie!” she called, but I didn’t stop. Just as I was about to enter my room, I paused and said,
“Go and meet your visitor. It’s all part of your plan, right?” Then I closed the door. My mom still didn’t understand why I was angry, and she knocked on the door.
I quickly realized that if I looked so sad, Leo might think I still had feelings for him. With that thought in mind, I went back to the door to meet my mom, who had refused to leave.
“Sadie, what have I done?” she asked, trying to hold my hands, but I pulled them back.
“Who told Leo that I came?” I asked.
“Leo? Did he still come today?” she exclaimed.
“Yes, and he called your name. Why did you tell him I was here?”
“Please, forgive me and try to understand something…”
“I don’t need to understand anything. I dislike him, and I don’t want to see him near my door. His presence reminds me of how foolish I was, and thinking about those days causes me great pain.”
“My dear Sadie, let me be honest. I didn’t tell Leo that you were here. He comes here every day and knocks on the front door. I told him you had traveled, but he said you would return one day. It was a coincidence. He was here yesterday.”
“Why didn’t you tell me all of this?”
“But you told me not to tell you anything about Leo anymore…” Then we heard a knock on the front door again, and it made my mom stop.
“Excuse me, let me handle him,” my mom said, and as she turned, I quickly said, “No, let me handle him. He came for me. If I stay indoors, he might think I still have feelings for him. Go and meet your boyfriend.”
“Are you sure you can handle this?” she asked.
“Yes, I can.” My face was already tense, and once he looked at me, he would immediately know my state of mind. My mom stood and watched as I walked toward the front door. The closer I got to the door, the less I looked back until I finally opened it.
“My mom told me you’ve been bothering her for a long time. What exactly do you want from me?” I tried to look at his face, but the more I looked, the more I remembered how he broke up with me at the award ceremony, so I looked away.
“Please, give me some of your time.”
“I have no time for you. You were the one who said I wasn’t good enough. Why are you coming back to me? It’s impossible, so just forget it. I came out again because I don’t want you to come here anymore. This should be the last time you set foot on this property. It surprises me that you don’t feel any shame. You publicly dumped me, and now you’re on your knees begging. Does that make any sense?” I touched my head with my fingers as I spoke, and it reminded me of what Daisy had told me. If I wanted Leo in my life, I would ask him to recreate that award ceremony with the same people and viewers, and instead of calling Tasha’s name on the stage, he would call mine. But that was impossible, so going back to Leo was impossible.
Leo was silent for a moment.
“Snap out of your fantasy. We can’t get back together. I already have a new boyfriend.”
My last statement shocked him, and he took two steps back. I saw his awkward look and decided to stay silent and hear what he had to say. It felt like I had been talking for ages.
“Sadie,” he wanted to touch me; maybe it occurred to him subconsciously, but I stepped back, almost hitting the door.
“What did you think you were about to do?” I asked angrily.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to hold you.”
“Please, never think of doing that again.”
“I’m sorry!” he said.
“Sadie, I am psychologically down. I’m not here literally asking for a relationship…”
“Then why are you here?” I interrupted.
“My career as a baseball player is going downhill, and my psychologist said it’s all linked to my relationship.”
“How does that concern me?” I shrugged and added, “Should I date you?” I raised my voice.
“No, Sadie, I want you…” he paused, and I thought he must be afraid to say it. I kept looking at him until he brought out a sports ticket and extended it to me, but I was still folding my arms, waiting for him to speak.
“Why are you giving me this ticket?” I asked when he refused to say anything.
“Please, Sadie, I want you to be at the stadium. Seeing you there will help me. If my team loses this final, my career will go down. We’ll be demoted to the lower division. Please, I want to see you while I play. Please! I’m not asking you to be my girlfriend. All I want is to see your face.”
“Is that all you want?” I asked.
“Yes, that’s all I want.”
I took the ticket from him while still standing and looking at him. I could see his frustration, and now he needed my presence to help him out.
“What are you waiting for? You should be on your way. I thought you came here for this ticket. Please, go now. I don’t want to see you here again. You’re traumatizing me.” As I said those words, I saw how they affected his facial expressions. He walked toward his car and drove away.
I turned and closed the door, and at that moment, I knew my mom had been behind the door, listening to our conversation.
“Well said,” she nodded.
“You should have told me he’s been coming here,” I said as I walked to my room.
The next morning, I couldn’t keep Leo’s visit a secret from Daisy when she called. It was the third time she had called since I left her city. I was just getting up from the bed when my phone rang, and I had woken up about an hour ago.
“Hi Sadie!” I could sense her smiling.
“Why are you smiling? I know you have something on your mind.”
“Nothing. I’m just excited.”
“If that’s the case, guess what?” I said.
“What?” Daisy asked.
“You wouldn’t believe it; Leo was here yesterday…”
“To do what? How did he know you were around?”
“I was surprised. My mom told me Leo always comes here to ask about me. He even gave me a VIP ticket to attend his club’s final game.”
“And what is your response?” she asked.
“I took the ticket, and he thought I would come, but just like he broke my heart, I will disappoint him at that event.”
“That sounds fantastic. So, I guess you’ll be meeting your new boyfriend later today?”
“Yes, but…”
“But what? Aren’t you meeting him again?”
“I will. It’s later in the evening…”
“Sadie, breakfast is ready!” my mom called.
“Your mom is calling you,” Daisy said, hearing the background voice.
“Yes. That reminds me, how is your boyfriend Douglas?”
“He… he’s fine. Can we talk later? I think she’s waiting for you.”
“Okay, okay,” I repeated and ended the call.
“Mum, I’m coming!” I came out of my room and went straight to the dining table. As we ate, I asked,
“Where is Ben?”
“He left this morning and will be back. Remember, I told you we’re going out in the evening.”
“Yes, you told me.” We continued eating. Then I started thinking about how I could introduce the idea of bringing home an older man as my boyfriend to my mom and how she would react.
“Mom, what do you think about this? For me, it’s about love and choice.” I paused and looked at my mom, then continued,
“A friend of mine is dating an older man. What do you think about that, Mum?”
“Hmm… What did her parents say about it?” my mom asked.
“She hasn’t introduced the man to her parents. What do you think about that?”
“It’s her choice, but I prefer younger men.” She paused and looked at me before adding, “I hope you’re not talking about Daisy?”
“No, no…” I said, noticing my mom’s disapproval of the idea of a young woman dating an older man. But that’s where I find myself. What should I do? I’m already in love with him.
A few minutes later, we finished breakfast, and my mom’s opinion didn’t affect me. I kept checking the wall clock, which seemed to be ticking too slowly for my liking. And in the midst of my longing to see him, a heartbreaking thought crossed my mind.
“What if he doesn’t show up?”
As short as that statement was, it traumatized me, and I couldn’t help but stand up and say,
“Please, please, don’t let this happen.” At that moment, my mom walked into my room and overheard what I said.
“Sadie, what’s happening to you? What shouldn’t happen?” she asked.
