Let me go
Austin leaned against his desk, fingers tapping a slow rhythm. The panic in his chest had been there for weeks, but tonight, it would finally lift. Everything that had threatened Dora would be over soon. After that, he would do whatever it took to make peace with her father, even beg if necessary.
One more night, and he would have the life he had been waiting for.
His phone buzzed, and he ended the call just as Dora’s arms wrapped around his waist. His body tensed slightly at the unexpected touch.
"You seem distracted," she said, tilting her head to study him.
Austin turned to her with a small smile, dimples deepening. "I was just thinking about us. Everything is falling into place."
His gaze lingered, full of something that made Dora’s cheeks warm. She quickly looked away, biting her lip as memories of the bathroom flashed in her mind. She wriggled in his hold, but he held firm.
"I need to finish a report," she said, avoiding his stare.
"Forget the report," he replied smoothly.
She shot him an annoyed look. "You were the one who demanded it."
"And you called me arrogant," he reminded her, eyes gleaming with amusement. "So, I had to act the part."
She let out a frustrated breath. "Let me go."
He loosened his grip, stepping back, and she blinked at him in surprise. "That easy?"
"Of course." He shrugged, then before she could take another step, he pulled her right back, pressing a quick kiss to her lips.
"Hey!" she protested, pushing against his chest.
His hands traveled down to her hips, his touch lingering. "You cannot make up your mind," he teased, voice low. "So until you do, I will enjoy your presence."
She covered his mouth with her palm. "Since when did you start saying things like this?"
He grinned against her hand. "Since your body started answering before your words."
Her eyes widened. "You sound like someone with strange cravings."
He chuckled. "My wife’s influence. She cannot seem to resist me."
She opened her mouth to argue, but he leaned against the desk, watching her closely. "They are changing," he murmured, fingers tracing over her curves.
Her breath caught, heat creeping up her skin as his hands moved with deliberate ease.
"See? My wife’s fault. She makes things difficult for me." He took her hand, pressing it over the proof of his frustration.
"You are impossible," she whispered, pulling her hand back.
"Yet, you react every time." He sighed dramatically. "And I have not even…"
"Shh!" She covered his mouth again, face burning. "I need to go before someone notices."
"That is incorrect, love. You left the bathroom, not the cabin," he corrected with a smirk.
She swatted at him, flustered. "Promise me you will behave."
His smile turned mischievous. "Only if you promise me something first."
She hesitated. The last time she had made a promise, she had ended up with a sore backside and endless teasing.
What would it be this time?
She folded her arms and narrowed her eyes. "Fine. What do you want?"
Austin leaned in, his breath warm against her ear. "Kiss me first, then I will tell you."
Her lips parted, and she shook her head. "That is not how promises work."
He lifted a brow. "In my world, they do."
She sighed, then leaned in and brushed her lips against his. It was meant to be brief, but he caught her waist, deepening the kiss. Her hands rested against his chest, and for a moment, she forgot why she had resisted in the first place.
When he finally pulled back, his eyes were dark with satisfaction. "Now, about that promise…"
She pushed against him, rolling her eyes. "You are impossible."
"And yet, you keep coming back to me," he murmured, his fingers skimming down her back.
She let out a shaky breath. "You are going to be the death of me."
He smirked. "That sounds like a promise too."
"What promise?" Dora asked hesitantly.
"Promise me we'll visit your gynecologist after meeting your parents tomorrow. I can't take it anymore. I need to be inside you, or I'll die from frustration," Austin said casually, as if discussing the weather.
Dora pinched his forearm in response but accidentally grazed his wound, making him hiss in pain.
"I didn’t know that apart from being horny, you also enjoy pain," he grumbled, making Dora burst into laughter.
"You’re such a wimp," she teased, but the moment the words left her mouth, she covered it in embarrassment.
Austin smirked. "Not bad. You’re learning to talk dirty. How about a little demonstration tonight?"
His words reminded Dora of something. "Can’t we go with Sienna and Douglas tonight?" she asked.
Austin's playful expression faded. "Sorry, sweetheart, I have an appointment."
Dora noticed the shift in his tone and frowned. "Where are you going?"
Austin stood up from the desk, finally letting go of her. She raised an eyebrow. Earlier, he had told her over the phone that tonight would be fun, so why did he suddenly look uneasy?
"Something important came up. I have to go," he said, taking her hands in his.
Dora hesitated before saying, "Austin, it took me a long time to trust you." She wasn’t sure why she said it, but something about his behavior felt off.
He looked into her eyes and squeezed her hands. "And I won’t break your trust. Please believe me." He kissed her palm gently.
"I trust you," she whispered.
Austin kissed the top of her head before stepping back. "I’ll ask Douglas to reschedule tonight. I might be late."
Dora nodded. "Okay." With that, she left.
Austin watched her walk away, silently praying, Please trust me this time.
He didn’t want to keep things from her, but the less she knew, the safer she would be. And even if he did tell her, he’d have to start from the beginning, his mother’s involvement, his doubts about her, it was too much.
At the office, Sienna immediately walked over to Dora’s desk, noticing the troubled look on her face.
"Did he scold you?" Sienna asked, concerned.
But when Dora winced while sitting down, Sienna’s eyes widened. Dora noticed her silence and looked up, only to see a mischievous smile playing on Sienna’s lips.
For a moment, she forgot about her worries and mentally kicked herself for being so careless.
Trying to act normal, she fumbled for an excuse. "No, I mean… I was supposed to give him a file, and…" She stopped abruptly when she saw that Sienna wasn’t buying it.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?" she stammered, pretending to focus on her work.
"Like what?" Sienna smirked.
Dora rolled her eyes. How does she always see through me?
Sienna leaned closer and whispered, "Like you have a fresh hickey and were dumb enough not to hide it?"
Panicked, Dora grabbed her phone and checked her reflection. But to her surprise, there was nothing there. She looked at Sienna in confusion.
Sienna smirked. "Got you."
"Ugh!" Dora groaned.
Sienna snapped her fingers. "Out with it!"
With no escape, Dora sighed. "Fine. We made out in his bathroom," she whispered.
Sienna gasped excitedly. "Tell me everything!"
