My boyfriend is back
Sadie's pov
“Daisy?” I called out, glancing at her. She was laughing uncontrollably, almost as if lost in her own world.
Justin, her father, smiled but then turned serious. “Love is powerful,” he said softly. “You need to be with someone who loves you back and is always there for you.” His words seemed to be directed at Daisy, who was in a long-distance relationship. It wasn't hard to guess that he was worried about her boyfriend, who was always traveling.
Right then, Daisy’s phone rang, cutting through the silence in the car.
“Hi, sweetheart,” she answered, her tone softening. The rest of us stayed quiet.. From her brief responses and the way her face lit up, it was clear that her boyfriend was back in town. Justin and I exchanged glances, deciding to wait until she was done with her call.
When Daisy finally hung up, she turned to us with a bright smile. “My boyfriend’s home. I think I’ll spend the night with him.”
“Congratulations,” Justin muttered, his voice laced with sarcasm. His tone instantly shifted the mood in the car.
Daisy frowned, clearly annoyed. “Dad, it’s his job. He travels a lot; it’s not his fault.”
“I wasn’t being rude. I meant it. You should take this chance to wear a beautiful gown when you see him. It’s not every day you get to meet your boyfriend.”
Daisy folded her arms, her jaw tightening in frustration. I could feel the tension rising again. The silence in the car was heavy, and I didn’t know how to diffuse the situation or whose side to take. It was awkward.
We pulled up in front of the boutique, but Daisy refused to get out of the car.
“Come on, let’s go inside,” I urged gently, but she stayed silent, clearly upset.
Justin, who had already gotten out of the car, returned and slid back in beside us. “Daisy,” he said softly, “I love you. That’s why I’m telling you these things. I just want you to be happy.”
I nodded in agreement, trying to support Justin’s words. “Your dad’s just looking out for you. Long-distance relationships are tough. He doesn’t want you to go through what he’s seen others go through.”
Daisy sighed, seeming to mull over our words before finally pushing open the car door. I followed her into the boutique, relieved that the tension was starting to ease.
Inside, we found ourselves having fun again, trying on dresses and laughing at each other’s choices. It felt like the argument in the car had been forgotten, at least for now.
On the way back, Justin did something that surprised me—he pulled into an ice cream shop and bought us all our favorite flavors. He lingered, as if he didn’t want the day to end.
“You’ll come back, right?” Justin asked, looking at me as he handed me my cone.
“Dad,” Daisy groaned, rolling her eyes. “You’ve asked Sadie that a thousand times.”
“I just want to know,” Justin said, grinning. “I even told Eric she’d go out with him when she’s back.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “Yes, I will.”
Then Daisy’s phone rang again. “Hi, sweetheart,” she answered, her voice soft and loving again. “I’m at your house. Where are you?”
It was Douglas, her boyfriend. I noticed Justin’s expression harden slightly, though he said nothing. We finished our ice creams, packed up, and headed home.
When we pulled into the driveway, I saw a sleek car parked outside. It was only the second time I had seen Douglas since he and Daisy had started dating. He always seemed distant, always using his work as an excuse.
Daisy leapt out of the car, running into his arms, and they kissed as if no one else was around. I glanced away, uncomfortable, only to catch Justin staring at me. For a brief moment, his eyes lingered on my lips, and I felt a flutter of nerves.
I quickly got out of the car, and Douglas approached, smiling warmly. “Good afternoon, Mr. Justin,” he greeted Daisy’s dad respectfully before pulling me into a brief hug.
Once inside, Justin turned what was meant to be a quick visit into a mini-celebration. He brought out two bottles of wine, and soon enough, we were all sitting around with glasses in hand, laughing as Justin shared stories from his youth.
Later, Daisy and I went into the kitchen to prepare dinner while the men stayed in the living room, watching baseball. The atmosphere was light, and for a moment, it felt like we were all part of a happy little family. Daisy and Douglas sat on one side of the table, facing Justin and me, and it was almost like we were couples, sitting across from each other. The thought sent a strange thrill through me.
As the evening drew to a close, Daisy and Douglas said their goodbyes, preparing to head back to his place. Justin and I walked them to the door. After they left, I turned to say something to Justin, but before I could, he took my hand, his grip firm and warm. Without a word, he led me back inside.
The touch sent a jolt through me, and my heart raced as I wondered what would happen next. Should I tell him what I’ve been holding back for so long? Should I give in to the pull between us? His eyes held mine, and I felt the tension crackle in the air.
“Sadie...” His voice was soft, almost hesitant.
