I thought otherwise
Sadie's pov
What have I done? I told myself to call Sara. As I continued to blame myself, my phone rang again, and it was Sara calling me. No, I can't answer the call. I've only added more fuel to the fire in Paul's household. All I wanted was to bring peace, but now I realize I was being presumptuous. If they weren't meant to stay together, why did I try to make them? Paul had already told me that Sara was seeing someone else, which should have been enough to end their marriage.
The call ended, and before I could take a breath of relief, my phone rang once more. This was a serious situation. It was a good decision not to answer Sara's call again. I knew Paul would be there, and if I picked up, what would I even say? Who told me to interfere in the first place? The call ended, but she kept calling. I had no choice but to switch off my phone after the third call, and finally, my room fell silent without the constant ringing.
Switching off the phone hadn't solved anything yet, but at least I had some peace for the moment. About thirty minutes later, while I was still in my room, the house phone in the sitting room began to ring. I was confident that neither Sara nor Paul had that number. I went to pick up the call, and it was Daisy's voice on the other end.
"Hi Sadie, what happened to your phone? I've been trying to call, but it's not connecting."
Inside, I thought there was no need to let Daisy know about what had happened between me and Paul's family. Out of nowhere, I said,
"My phone broke, and I'm planning to go to the grocery store or a phone shop to get a new one."
"Okay, when are you getting it?"
"Any moment now."
"Did you tell my dad?" she asked.
"No," I responded, trying to downplay the situation.
"You need to tell him. You're the reason my dad has been happier lately. He would be thrilled to buy you a brand new phone. Don't miss this opportunity. Honestly, I won't tell him. He was the reason you came here in the first place. It's our secret. Don't spend your money on a new phone. Go and tell him right now."
"Wow, thanks, but your dad has already left the house. He said he had an appointment."
"Then wait for him to come back. Besides, I can still reach you using the sitting room phone. Another reason I called is about my mum."
"What happened?" I asked with a calmed voice.
"She's testing my loyalty..."
"What do you mean?" I interrupted.
"She said that since she left, she wouldn't be the one to ask me to stay with her. She even said that it seems like I prefer staying with my dad. But I told her it's because you're here. When I said that, she told me to ask you to come over to her house if that's the case. Basically, the plan is for you to come here, and after spending the same amount of time I stayed with my dad, we can go back.”
"Will you be staying with your dad then?" I asked, not even understanding what I asked. It felt like a sudden jolt of pain struck my heart, as Daisy's new plan meant I wouldn't be able to spend quality time with Justin, something I couldn't bear to miss out on.
"If my dad needs my mum, then she can come and meet him. Although, the few times I've stayed with my mum, I've caught her giggling with her phone. I know she's been talking to a man. And when we leave my dad, we'll uncover his secret and find out who he's dating. It's been a mystery to him, but when we all leave him for a while, we'll get to know his lady friend."
"What about the house opening? Aren't we going? It's just a few days away, and I think it will happen."
"That's not a problem Sadie. You and I will be there, and I want you to do me a favor. During the party, we'll keep an eye on my dad. It's a must for him to come with his lady friend to the party."
"Okay, please get back to me. I'm feeling some pain in my chest," I quickly ended the call. I acted as if I couldn't understand Daisy's new idea, and I was relieved that we weren't talking face to face. She would have seen my expressions.
What kind of idea was that? Can I really stay away from Justin? And now that Daisy and her mum were suspicious of him, I needed to tell him that we had to be cautious.
As I sat down to fully contemplate Daisy's call, I realized that her initial words showed her concern for me. But buying a new phone wasn't my concern. I have the money for it, and I can afford it. My biggest concern was being apart from Justin. How would I handle that? How would I escape from Daisy's mother's house to see Justin?
While I was still pondering what to do, I heard the sound of a car approaching the door. An overwhelming joy rushed through me as I ran to the door. I knew it was Justin. I opened the door, but I had no idea how he found out my heart was troubled. As he opened his arms to embrace me at the door, he instantly sensed that I had been upset just moments ago, despite my attempt to appear happy. He handed me a rose he had bought, and we almost kissed by the door. I quickly pulled him inside to avoid getting carried away by our affection.
He moved his lips away and asked,
"What's wrong?"
I wanted to tell him about Daisy and her mum's plans, but at that moment, I changed my mind and said,
"My phone is acting up, so I've been feeling a bit down."
"Is that why you're sad?" Justin asked.
"Yes. I wanted to reach you on the phone, but I couldn't." Then I paused as the sitting room phone rang again. I walked closer to it and saw that it was Daisy calling.
"Hi Sadie, I'll come to pick you up tomorrow. I miss you."
"I miss you too. What time tomorrow?" I asked reluctantly, my face filled with anger again as I can't say no. If I do, it will be obvious that there was something going on between Justin and I.
"Let's say in the morning, so we can all have breakfast together," Daisy said.
"So how many days are we staying at your mum's house?"
"No specific time, but at least more than a week or two. I want to make her happy, and she said my absence is causing her depression. Please ask my dad to get you the phone today…”
"Daisy! Daisy!! Where are you?" I could hear Daisy's mum calling her name.
"Please, Sadie, we'll talk later. Bye!" She ended the call abruptly. In slow motion, I placed the phone on the desk and turned to face Justin.
"What have you done to me? How can I be without you? Whenever I'm alone, I feel your touch and hear your voice," I said to Justin.
"What's making you sad that you're hiding from me, Sadie?" He approached me, attempting to hold me, but I pulled away. It was a conflicting feeling, and I was already bitter about leaving his presence for a while and I wish he could have done something for it not to happen.
"Is Daisy taking you away?" he asked, and I nodded.
"How will we see each other?" I asked, our eyes locked on each other.
"I won't allow you to leave this house," he raised his voice, showing that he was now feeling the same way I was feeling when I thought about his absence. Then he continued,
"Tell Daisy you're not leaving here. How can I cope? Are you serious about this?" he asked, and when it became evident that he was angry, I moved towards him and embraced him.
"What are we going to do? This is why I didn't want to come here. When I set my eyes on you, I can't control myself anymore. I can't imagine staying in the same city without seeing you regularly as I want."
He patted my back and said, "Let's go buy the phone first. If today is our last night before Daisy comes to pick you up, then we're not spending it in this house. I'm taking you to a five-star hotel. Don't worry," he kissed my lips and continued, "we'll find a way out."
Those words melted my heart and I felt relieved.
After Justin left the living room and went to his room, I decided to turn on her phone. As the phone finally turned on, it started receiving a continuous stream of text message notifications, one after another. I waited until all the messages had come through. The messages were from both Paul and Sara. Just as I was about to read each text, her phone rang. It was a call from Paul's friend, Sam, and I quickly answered it. The first thing he said was,
"Sadie, what have you told Sara? Your words have caused chaos in Paul's house," he said in a rush. “You did it and you turned off your phone.”
"I didn't say anything. I was trying to help save Sara and Paul's marriage. They were planning to get divorced. Didn't they tell you? I wanted to talk to Sara and convince her not to go through with the divorce because of their little daughter."
"Who told you they wanted a divorce? Listen and listen well. The key to peace in Paul's house is in your hands right now. Please, you need to call Sara. Listen to what I'm about to tell you, then tell her w
hat I am about to tell you.”
"What is it?" I asked.
